Water Polo: A Sport I'm Terrified of Trying

Posted by RyanActive on Aug 12, 2008 11:14:43 AM

Being from the Midwest, I had no familiarity with water polo until I was a teenager. It was then that I stumbled across a match on television and watched with great interest for a little while.

Until I noticed something kind of important.

"Wait a minute," I asked my father. "They can't touch the bottom?"

Nope. Which makes water polo an amazingly physical game of endurance, strength, strategy and above all else, survival.

It's so-far-so-good for the United States in the Beijing Olympics. The U.S. women beat China in its opener, 12-11, which included a goal by superstar Brenda Villa , who's looking for her first gold medal in her third Olympic try.

The men are doing fine, too. With knowledge that the pool is deep, I watched with great respect as the Americans beat China, 8-4, over the weekend before beating Italy, 12-11, to improve to 2-0.

Hey, I'm all for trying new things. Water polo seems like a great sport. But knowing that the floor is 12 feet down, knowing that your opponent is kicking you and draping you under the water for the sake of victory, and knowing that we humans don't have gills, I'll probably enjoy water polo as a spectator sport. And I won't feel bad about it.

Here's a great goal from the 2000 Sydney Olympics:

I can tell you from first hand experience that kicking and dunking are the least of your worries when playing waterpolo.  Let's just say that a women's self-defense course could be taught from an underwater video of a good waterpolo game.

In my years playing the game, I was the lucky recipient of 3 broken fingers, countless black eyes, strained rotator cuffs, shoulder injuries, and a hematoma on my eyeball (among others that aren't appropriate for all audiences).  Aw, memories...

WOW! What a ridiculous goal that was. Just like in baseball they should have a radar gun on the H20-Polo Ball. The ball easily reached 50 MPH. Amazing.

My 4th senior year of college I played on a 'innertube water polo' team.  Not even 1% as tough as the real thing.  I can honestly say that even from atop the water it was an amazing sport.  My teammates were ex-high school stars in the central valley of California, and played for Fresno state's club team.  Some of the shots they took made me feel bad for the goalies on the other team.  It was as if they were shooting on an open net and the person in the way was merely an obstacle, like a miniature golf hole.

I love the Olympics because they give sports like Water Polo a chance to get some of the spotlight normally hogged by the "big 4" here in the USA.
