Max Heart Rate

Posted by Active Belle on Dec 18, 2007 9:27:21 AM

Gale,

I just got a new training toy--a Timex digital transmission heart rate monitor. Although it already defaults to a maximum heart rate of 165, the directions suggest I determine what my maximum heart rate really is and set it to that.

What is the best way to determine my max heart rate?

Thanks,

Belle

follow up: I just remembered that a few weeks ago you directed me to several introductory documents, one of which covers the topic of training intensity. I will read that and see if I still have any questions.

Hi Belle,

This is Stephen.  Gale has set us up as training buddies as we are both working towards the same goal.  I used to race in triathlons but have taken a few years away from the sport to focus on my career.  Now I am trying to get back on the horse with consistent training and fitness.  Hopefully we can work together to keep each other on track.

From my past experience, your MHR (max heart rate) is different for every sport. So it is difficult to set one number.  I actually just completed a MHR test on the bike yesterday.  I started with 10mins easy spinning followed by a number of 2min intervals with no rest with each getting progressively harder until I was at an all-out sprint for about a minute (before my legs shut down).  My top value during the sprint was 194.  The article you have posted has a good test for running.  I did something similar a few years back and found a MHR for the run was 202.  I can guess it is maybe a beat or two lower since I am a few years older and have not been training for the past 3 years.

I can speak from experience to make sure you have a good base of fitness before trying the tests so you don't get injured.  I'm sure Gale would know best of when to do these.

Anyway, I hope we can help encourage each other to complete our goals.  I believe we will be working the same training plan leading into Wildflower (Unfortuneatly I live in Vancouver, Canada and won't be there but have a similar Olympic distance race the week after here).

Hey Belle ~

Hmmmm. I need to see why your post didn't flag me. I should have seen this last week, but happened to see it today when I referred someone to your site.

Anywho, you asked about max HR. I don't use max HR to determine training zones. One reason is that I don't think it is good for currently hibernating athletes to begin their exercise programs by attempting to find max HR. Secondly, for tri training, I don't have people aim for max HR in any of the training.

I see you have gone to the download documents to help you determine training zones. Let me know if you have questions there.

Glad to see Stephen is online. Both of you can help others not only get active - which is always easy on January 1 - but help them STAY active. You'll both do a great job at it.

Hey Stephen-

Welcome aboard--It will be great to have a training partner over the next few months. Thanks for the notes on your MHR tests. I guess Gale doesn't have people aim for MHR in any of the tri training. But I will have to figure out what my heart rate is in the various zones soon so I will let you know how that goes.

How have the holidays/Boxing Day been for you? I had some trouble fitting the workouts in on Christmas and the two days flanking it. I am hoping that New Years in Chicago goes better for me.

Well, I am psyched to have you along! good luck

Hey Gale, The best guess I have for why you didn't get a notification is that maybe you were only flagged to receive notices on a single post and not on the overall blog. Go to the main blog page and see if you are flagged to "watch the blog" there.

Also, I do have a question about heart rate. After reading the document on training intensity, I think I understand how to determine my lactate threshold but I am not clear on how to apply that information to determine my training zones.

On the very last page of the "Training Intensities" document is a chart that gives you percentages of Lactate Threshold Heart Rate to find your zones.

right...of course:) I really did read the rest of the document! There is something about charts that makes my eyes go blurry... I just looked at it again and it makes perfect sense.

Thanks
