Weekend Report

Posted by Active Belle on Dec 18, 2007 9:04:45 AM

I was in the Santa Cruz mountains this past weekend visiting my boyfriend. He lives across the street from an open space preserve with lots of great trails so we went for a trail run instead of doing the shorter run I was supposed to do.

I was supposed to do a timed 1-mile run on a flat course at heart rate 9-11 beats below my lactate threshold heart rate. Gale, What does that mean and can/should I still work this in.

Because you ran six miles, does that mean you can skip the next five one-mile runs?  I'm sure Gale would be OK with that, right?

You are creative, indeed.

Actually, you bring up a good question about training. In Belle's case, she "paid it forward" in that she did a longer workout than was assigned on the training plan. In most cases people try to make up for lost training during the week by doing extra on the weekends.

It's tough for me to make a blanket statement that says "never" do more or less than the plan because with pre-built plans, the user needs to make some conscious decisions about how to best use the plan.

In some cases the plan might be easier than the athlete is capable of accomplishing. In this case, adding a bit to the training makes sense.

In cases where the athlete is doing more haphazardly, there are at least a couple of risks: injury and loss of motivation because the training was too much too soon.

Hope the remaining workouts between then and now went well?
