Busting through foot pain and the flu

Posted by RunBrianRun on Feb 13, 2008 11:37:08 PM

Yep, this was a challenging week.  Got the stomach flu last week and this week by dreaded feet decided to give me issues.  Maybe a little too much running.  Do not fret, though.  I still had a pretty good week because I got most of my workouts in.

Lifting, running and eating well (ok, sort of well) is all going great.  In addition, on the weekends I am taking the kids out hiking to get an extra level of activity.  Not strenuous my any stretch, but activity is activity.  And it feels great.  The issue with my feet is an ongoing thing.  Being 200lb+ for the past 10 years and still being active, I have pretty much destroyed my arches.  I have orthodics and overall they do the trick.  They aren't the best when it comes to complete comfort and running super long distances.  But overall they are a blessing. Yes, occasionally something goes wrong in my feet and they will swell up.  Nothing worse than foot pain.  It usually takes a couple days to overcome that (with the help of my good friend Alleve), and I am back on track.  So, that is my big pain (no pun intended) this week.  Nope, not the big macs this time.  If there are any podiatrists out there, speak up.  I would love to know the answer to getting my feet back.  Do they make Rocket Shoes????  OK, just getting giddy now.

Anyhow, I am learning to fit in the workouts throughout my terribly busy schedule.  It feels good.  Not easy, but rewarding when I complete them.  Thank you for all the tips.  They work and it is nice to get that advice.  Keep it coming.

Hang in there Brian! On the other side of all this pain and adversity is something wonderful. Or possibly the psych ward!;-) You can do this. It is worth it. "What does not kill me makes me stronger!" HOO-RAH!

It never hurts to go talk to the folks that fitted you for shoes!  If you weren't fitted at a specialty running store, now is a good time to do so.  Having the right shoes for your feet, body, goals can make the difference, especially in those long runs.

Also, take a look at your progression in training.  Although the pain can make you stronger it can also be your body telling you your doing too much too soon.  If it hangs around a day or so you are fine but if it sticks around longer figure out why it is happening too many runs too soon, too fast...

The key to getting to that start line safely is to bob and weave through all the up's and down's in your training.  Just like life, you will come out on top of your game.

I think you were absolutely right.  Feet needed a break.  I knew this was a real possiblility.  Years of athletics at my weight has honestly beat my feet up pretty good.  I had a great week anyway.  Thanks for your support.  I will very much head over to the running store next week.  There is a store in downtown Encinitas I have gone to in the past that really did a nice job working with my orthodics.  I think it was called "Movin' Shoes".   Will keep you posted.
