Bruce or anyone else. This will be my first time to the Amgen Tour. I will only be able to stay for the first 3-4 days. I would appreciate advice on some of the best places to view the first 3 stages. It appears that there are even ways to see an early part of a stage, and then take other roads and get to the finish. At this point we will be "motelling" it, but if anyone has advice on this too, I'd appreciate it.
Dan,
the prologue is a great way to get to see the riders up close and personal as they warm up, individually, for their starts. I would strongly suggest spending the whole day there. Stage 1 is a bit tricky. You could see them come by Winters at about mile 10 and then take the 505 and head towards Santa Rosa. You could also see them come by Moskowite Corners and then head toward Fairfield or Napa. After that, you risk missing the finish.
Stage 2 is also tricky. If you want to be there at the finish then I would suggest watching the riders climb either Tunitas Creek Road or Highway 35; the key here is that you are in a position to be able to escape to the east back toward Silicon Valley then take Hiway 17 over to Santa Cruz for the finish.
Stage 3 looks to be a real snoozer. You can watch them climb up Calaveras Road and then head on over to Modesto for the finish.
I hope this helps,
Bruce
ps - plan to park your car off the race route. If you are riding, get there early.
Excellant help, thanks. I'll map out these options for stages 1-3. We will plan on the full day at the Prologue. It looks like since there will be four of us we'll leave the bikes home. Too bad, 'cause even if we didn't ride sections of the race course I hear that Sacramento has some good trails along the river for road bikes. Thanks Again.
I know I'll be up on Palomar Mountain with a big group of folks from the Triathlon Club of San Diego. This will be the first bike race I've ever gone to watch. Is there proper etiquette for cycling fans? I've seen some pretty rowdy footage on tv
