However, I wonder about their small sample size (n=7) and the elite status of the athletes (how does this translate to a non-elite competitive athlete?). Without being an exercise physiologist I would also want to see information about how that high level of caffeine impacts the amount of water that should be consumed post-workout to replenish water not only lost through sweat but also through the additional diuretic effects of caffeine. Thanks for the information!

RE: Why Exertion Leads to Exhaustion

Ok, since we're in the nest and I feel like I can ask you questions that have been on my mind lately, I decided after reading this post that now would be an appropriate time to follow up with this question relating to pH levels in our muscles being effected by exercise. Do muscles become increasingly acidic during exercise and if they do, does ingesting basic foods bring these levels back down towards balanced pH? I guess its a multi-part question, each part relying on the answer of the preceding question, so if this is the case, what are some easily digestible foods/fuels that offer basic pH levels. I've also noticed an ammonia-like smell after training that I've read somewhere is related to protein breakdown--are all of these related? Hopefully others will benefit from this as well.

Thanks Diet Detective!
