RE: Whole Grains vs. Refined

Hi Ally 43 - - You should eat anywhere from 6-11 servings a day. It depends on your size and activity level. A serving includes 1 slice of bread, 1 cup of cold cereal, or ½ cup of cooked rice, cooked pasta, or cooked cereal. About half of all of your grains each day should be from whole grain sources. Try to aim for that!

The timing does not really matter for when you eat your grains. It is best to spread out your carbohydrate/grain intake throughout the day and not eat too many at any one sitting. You can eat them at meals and snacks.

Try to mix your meals too. By this I mean, try to avoid 100% carbohydrate, 100% protein or 100% fat meals. Carbohydrates include grains, beans, starchy vegetables, fruit and milk. Protein includes eggs, poultry, fish, pork and beef. Fat includes oils, butter and margarine.

Mix it up by incorporating carbohydrate, protein and fat. Put some peanut butter on that toast or some low fat cream cheese on your bagel. By mixing your meals, you will feel fuller longer. The fiber in whole grains also helps your feeling of satiety.

Remember that grains are great sources of carbohydrate and carbohydrates create energy. You need them to live and be energized.
