When I work on something related specifically to the women's market, I have heightened awareness of advertising and marketing issues.

Last weekend I had just finished writing a piece on women's products in the sports industry and was feeling really smug about how well women are represented in the endurance and outdoor sports industry.

I, and all of my smugness, settled down on the sofa to enjoy a homemade latte and a magazine. While thumbing through the magazine, I began to wonder, "Hey! Where are the women?"

It seemed to me that men were photographed and featured significantly more often than women. Instead of making accusations and assumptions, I decided to count. I wanted data.

I simply thumbed through the magazine and counted the number of female and male images. This included ads, stories, editorial and anything that was not in the small ad section in the back of the magazine. If there was a male and a female featured in a single photo, I didn't count them at all-they cancelled each other out.

I was surprised with what I found. My smugness changed to disappointment.

I checked more magazines, five in total. The magazines are non-gender specific related to outdoor or endurance sports. Here is what I found:

  1. 6 female, 80 male
  2. 12 female, 101 male
  3. 13 female, 55 male
  4. 38 female, 68 male
  5. 81 female, 99 male

Go on a magazine hunt and let me know what you find...

I studied women in the media a lot in college; I'm very intrigued by this kind of stuff.

If you don't mind revealing what your magazines #1 and #5 are, I'd be interested in knowing!

Trish ~

I figured I'd be challenged to reveal. 1) VeloNews, 2) Outside, 3) Bicycling, 4) Runner's World, and 5) Triathlete.

1, 2 and 5 are the most recent issues to subscribers. Due to my overwhelming curiosity, I went to the news stand and picked up the newstand issues of 3 and 4. I don't have them near me, but I'd have to assume they are the October issues.

I want to know what other hunters find. Was this a one-issue, issue? Or, is this the norm? And, what about other magazines?

Since I showed the cards, I'll look for you to collect some data.

I believe a lot of that is driven by ads. Outside Magazine made a conscious decision to cater to a male market. This apparently sells more magazines and makes it easier to sell ad space. I would not be surprised if that were the case for some of the other magazines too.

Hi Gale, before I left my desk for the weekend I decided to collect that data. The findings blew me away and at the same time weren't all that unexpected. I subscribe to three magazines: Outside, Bicycling and Sports Illustrated.

I chose to delve into SI--perhaps the most unbalanced magazine of all--as the other ones have already been covered. This season in particular (and this specific issue) as there are many shots of football teams and the Red Sox winning the World Series.

Continuing with your method of counting these are the results I came up with:

8 female, 256 male

Wow.

Notably, about half of the women depicted were in an ad and had nothing to do with sports.

I think you're probably right about the ads and the conscious decision on the part of management. I think what is most disturbing to me is that I didn't notice. I've been a subscriber to Outside for years and for whatever reason, I didn't notice that women are not well represented in the magazine. VeloNews is primarily (or has been) a big tour magazine - which is a male sport. I expected it from Velo - not from Outside.

I wonder what else I haven't noticed or have accepted as the norm?
