Estes or Bust

Posted by Gale Bernhardt Nov 7, 2007

In January this year, I wrote a column about goal setting and the characteristics of good, challenging goals. Twelve of us set out to ride to Estes Park once per month throughout 2007. The last I knew, eight people are still on track to make it and receive the coveted award.

Last Sunday, several of us rode to Estes to check off the month of November. We reminisced about our February trip - that was the coldest and windiest ride of the year. The ride included a dermabrasion from the sand on the road. Ah, a grand adventure for sure.

For our Estes goal, there were a few rules:

Rules:

  • Ride to Estes Park starting from anywhere in Loveland and no further west than the Big Thompson school.
  • Either route, Hwy 34 or Glen Haven, is acceptable.
  • A return trip sans car and via bike back to Loveland is not mandatory, but encouraged when conditions are safe and fitness allows.
  • The honor system is strictly enforced - ride with or without the group, with a buddy or solo.

Estes Park is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Tourists flock to the park to see wildlife, including herds of elk. The elk do notice bike riders, especially us. For 2006, the elk gave awards to six cyclists for managing to ride to Estes Park once per month for the entire year. (Yes, the elk were so impressed to see the cyclists each month, they decided to make a personalized award for each cyclist.)

This is last year's award:

And yes, that thing hanging on the bottom of the lower loop is exactly what you think it is - forever fossilized and now waterproofed by craft lacquer.

Estes or bust...

I can't wait to see what the award is for this year! On a serious note, this is a great post. You've been steadily working at this goal for some time now. You've surrounded yourself with like-minded people who hold you accountable and support you and your realistic yet appropriately challenging goal. This is also quite timely with our beloved New Year's resolutions right around the corner. It's that time of year again! Would you recommend getting a jump-start on goal setting for 2008?

Wow! That's one of the best awards I've ever seen! Good thing it didn't come from the bears, or you might have a fish head hanging there. Though now I'm not sure which is worse...

I've been building toward 12 consecutive months of riding my bike to work. However, the only wildlife I see are people in cars, and the awards they give me are mostly little birds.

Ah yes, the coveted Turd Trophy - as it has been nicknamed. I'll be sure to post a photo of the 2007 trophy.

You posted a nice summary to what makes this goal, and others, achievable - thanks.

As for getting a jump-start on goal setting, I do recommend getting a jump-start. Get some plans started so that January 1 is the start of progress towards the goals rather than brainstorming goals.

Do you have some in mind?

Good job of riding your bike for 12 consecutive months to work, Jesse. Certainly the achievement cannot go unrecognized. Celebration planned? A new piece of cool gear to reward your achievement?

A reward is a good idea. Maybe I'll buy myself one of these chairs for the office so I can keep pedaling during the day: http://www.campeggisrl.it/coppitech.html

And don't be fooled by Toby's question. He's got goals planned well into 2009. Though for many of us, trekking across the Sahara would be less a goal and more of suicide quest.

Now that is a cool chair. You would be the talk of the office with that thing - and since you could work up to peddaling all day - maybe RAAM next?

I have to admit I've had a glimpse of one of Toby's 2008 lists - but I don't recall the Sahara. Yikes, talk about dermabrasion...

Whatever reward you get, I want a photo...

All week its been bike fork lamps, wireless bike stereo and now these crazy seats--I think Jesse should reward himself (or be rewarded) with a trip to 2008 Interbike.

My 2008 race list remains mostly the same as of now. There is still question about family travel plans, 70.3 Rhode Island or Vineman, but I'll get it all figured out.

As far as the Sahara race..I've set my sights on a more exciting option (for 09 actually)

My reward will be to stay in Costa Rica for a few extra days to learn how to walk again ;)
