It looks like you crashed into the barrier near transition. Susan was about 2-3 miles into the first lap of the five-lap course.
Ahhh...the Olympic races are like no other. The stresses and demands on the athletes prior to the Games are unimaginable. Everyone wants a piece of them (media, family, friends, sponsors, etc.) There is more pressure on the favorites. Those that spend too much time and energy "enjoying the Games experience" will not race well.
Personal freedom is less at the Olympics than any other event. Credentials are required to get anywhere near the athletes prior to the race. Security pre-race and during the race is tight. The athletes that can handle these oddities the best will perform the best.
We don't know who is nursing small (or significant) injuries going into the Games - because they pushed that performance edge too far.
Here are the results from 2004 - notice some of the "favorites" were not on the podium. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triathlon_at_the_2004_Summer_Olympics
I say it's anyone's race to win. Laura Bennett has typically done very well at World Championship events - and many big events. Has she got it figured out for what is likely her last big game?
I did it wrong and crashed into an orange barrier at a race a couple weeks ago. T1 was on a little bit of a slope and I didn't have a low enough gear to start. Even knocked my brakes off alignment a bit, so I had to stop and fix them. But I did not get a bronze medal
I got a 2nd place acrylic trophy instead!
Can't wait to see what happens with the women's race. I think it's Vanessa Fernandez's race to lose (although it would be awesome to be surprised). But it's going to come down to how bad Emma Snowsill wants it, IMHO.
Thoughts, oh Expert?
