It is very profound how you compare the challenge of the RAAM to the participants with the challenges that we all face from time to time. I remember the fear I had to overcome facing an ocean swim in my first triathlon, as I was a terrible swimmer and very much afraid of the water. I dove in and emerged a stronger person, having successfully completed the ordeal.

I enjoy following and participating in endurance sports because they allow us an opportunity to celebrate our capabilities, as apposed to being reminded of our limitations. Events like the RAAM and Ironman - Hawaii showcase not only the most talented in our sport, but also ordinary folks like you and me, who accomplish something well beyond their normal reach. They are truly an inspiration to us all!

If you fall, you're tied to the bike and it tumbles with you. I have no idea of the validity of this, because, at the time, the UCI was still not mandating the use of helmets.

As you said the trip back down and out of the area was a real adventure. I had to drive to Geneva that night to fly to Paris early the following AM. I saw each stage from the Col de Romme/Columbierre stage to the finish in Paris. It was a truly memorable experience, biking some of it would have been truly awesome. I've never gotten that little sleep and still felt so energized. It wasn't just about the racers, the energy of the fans who had come from everywhere on earth was inspiring. Thanks for the great photos also.
