Just a few months ago I would have said I didn't see myself doing a 50 miler. I'm slowly starting to believe that anything is possible with hard work, dedication, and the courage to try. If I can do it, anyone can do it. 26.2 is awesome! Congrats to you and all the 50 mile runners. It's incredible to think you spent almost half a day racing. Very inspiring.

If it's not too painful a memory, what was the terrible pop song you got stuck in your head? I was teaching at a kids arts camp this past summer and had one of the camp songs stuck in my head for about a week full of runs as a result. I feel your pain on that one...

Scott, for some reason I've had a hard time grasping onto the athlete part of my identity. I'm so used to being the smart girl- I've been the smart girl for 26 years. I've developed my brain and built my CV and got so used to rocking school that it became my primary identity. By the time I was 22 I had a fellowship from the NIH and had been published in an academic journal. In contrast, I didn't start running until I was 23. Two 1/2 years ago I could barely run a mile. Two days ago I ran 50 miles. At once. On the Appalachian Trail. It's all so crazy to wrap my head around and I'm so shocked not only at how far I've come but that I can balance being a brain while punishing (er, training? ) my body. I need to get better at understanding that those parts of me can coexist.

Thanks for your support!

Will read it again, too, to relive the day. It was more dream-like than most races to me. I loved the smell of the leaves and the river next to me. Eating M&M's with impunity is also a unique experience. MMMM & MMMM.

Going to spend some training time getting better at the AT part in the future. Seems like 1/2 hr could be shaved off just being more able to handle that craggy trail.

-George

I think if I would have done better at the Pittsburgh triathlon that I wouldn't take the sport as seriously as I do now. Because I have so much respect for it, it's motivated me to really go after it and put in the hard work which I think will lead to a really successful season. We'll see! Thanks for your thoughtful comments!
