The weather outside is frightful

Posted by MegNH Dec 8, 2007

Now that I've formally announced I'm "Getting Active" by running, I have a few thoughts to lay down. My runs haven't begun yet. My coach(es?) is/are working things out for me this week. When I look outside, I get nervous.

Thoughts keep racing through my head.....
I hate to be cold.
What am I going to wear?
These roads are awfully narrow.
Boy that car was going fast.
What am I going to wear?
It sure gets dark early. (4:15ish)
Husband gets home at 6:00.
Running alone in the dark?! Yikes!
Treadmill instead? Ugh, no way.
What am I going to wear?
Should I hire a sitter so I can run in the day light?
I wonder what other runner-moms do?
Why did my 4yr old have to cut her brother's hair (to the scalp) before Christmas photos?
Is anybody really reading this blog?
What am I going to wear?

Stay tuned for ...."How I lost 40 pounds." That's right, I'm saving the good stuff for next week. By then I'll be functioning on a runners high. (Wow, thinking about a runners high just put a huge smile on my face.) I can't wait.

Hey Megan, its Active Toby here. I thought I'd chime in and give my $00.02 as New Englander, turned west coaster, turned runner--I've shared similar thoughts to cold weather training and training in the dark. You should have an outfit or two of cold weather clothing made from synthetic materials. Start with these against the skin aka base layers and move to a micro fleece mid-layer which you might end up shedding and tying around your waste once you get moving and your internal temps increase. Be sure to wear a hat and gloves as well and those should be made of synthetics or maybe wool if wool doesn't bother your skin. I've just recently begun running with a reflective vest. I highly encourage this safety measure. It's so easy to do and might make the road feel a little wider. I also use a headlamp so I don't need to hold a flashlight in my hands but I recommend some sort of light that you can direct and signal with. As far as married life advice, I'll have to bow-out here. Best of luck with your training. Please keep us up-to-date! ~Active Toby

In addition to motherhood and a busy life, I will become a runner. I will juggle family obligations while training and work hard to reach weight loss goals. Feel free to follow me on my journey.
