Track Workouts on My Own?

Posted by MegNH on Jan 18, 2008 7:39:17 AM

At the risk of sounding a bit whiney, I have some concerns about group track workouts. I really like meeting all the people, but I am one of the slowest runners and etiquette dictates I run on the outside of the track (where it's banked on the corners). It aggravates my knee. If I did my track workout on my own (sad as that sounds) when the dome is less crowded, I'd be able to run on the inside of the track (with no bank on the corners). Perhaps I can do my workout after the faster runners are finished.

My second reason for doing track workouts on my own is that our beginner coach (a gentleman from the running club who is doing his best to be helpful) is a bit of a lecturer. I feel over-corrected (like I can't do anything right), pushed too hard (he runs with us) and then told we're either going too fast or too slow. I'm feeling pressured to listen to him, instead of listening to my body. I left the track Wednesday night with an aching knee and feeling frustrated. Perhaps dealing with some pressure is part of being coached? I don't know.

I iced my knee, took some aspirin and skipped my run yesterday. It is feeling much, much better today.

You don't sound whiney at all, just stating how you feel.....

I've never been to the dome so I'm not sure how drastic the bank is, but I would not advise doing much in the third lane.  The key for you is to stay healhty.  Doing track workouts will add some speed but we don't want to do that at the expense of your health.

I understand how you feel about the coaching.  I'm a much more "hands-off" type coach because that is the kind of coach I liked having.  I think a coach should be more of an advisor not a dictator (I'm not implying that he is).  There should be a lot of give/take between coach and athlete.  Having said that, it is very difficult to coach a large number of people at once.  All of the people at the workout have different objectives, different levels of fitness, and varying levels of comprehension of the basics behind a training program.  My guess is that a lot of what he is doing is to try and reach everyone at once.

There should be some pressure, but I'd prefer that the pressure comes from within YOU.  That you feel you SHOULD be running, not that you are worried that I'll get mad if you aren't following the program.

Right now the track workouts for you are a chance to meet people and to do a little faster running out of the elements.  There is no requirement that you do the same workout as everyone else.  Perhaps this week you could chat with someone else in the group and see if they would like to do and "easier" workout with you.  Or if you don't feel comfortable enough with that, I like your idea of starting a bit later after the faster folk are finished.

Glad to hear that the knee is feeling better.  Keep icing even if it isn't sore.

I agree with all of DD's advice. As Dave correctly points out it is difficult for one person to coach a group with various goals and fitness levels. The only thing I would add is to approach the beginner coach and let him know your concerns. If he is aware that running in the outer lane is causing you knee discomfort maybe he can offer another solution.

Good advice.  I'll do that.  Thanks.

I too prefer more hands-off coaching.  I think people learn and perform best when they direct their own learning, have time to process information and ask questions at their own pace.  You have done this very well.  I am grateful and perhaps a little spoiled by it.

Next Wednesday, I'm going to workout after the faster runners are done.  I'll let you know how it goes.  I'll try to include some cool photos of the track too.....just for fun.

Megan, It's to bad we don't live closer.  I to prefer not training with a coach.  I am looking for someone to run with outside a group.  I'm not the fastest runner either.  On a good day I run 9.5 to 10 minute miles.  Before all the cold weather that was for 6 miles.  Now I'm not sure where I'm at.  All I can say is keep it up. Sounds like you're doing all the right things. Maybe someone in your group feels the same way about the coaching and the two of you can train together. If running is what you love you'll find a way.

Yes, it is too bad we're not closer.  I'd love a running partner.  You may be a bit faster than me, though.

Also, I hope I haven't misled you (and others) by doing a bit of complaining.  I like to be coached.  In fact, I LOVE to be coached.  I just like a coach who lets me take the lead in my workouts....and acts as more of an advisor (like Coach Dunham does).
