Week 6 Mileage

Posted by MegNH on Jan 27, 2008 6:24:25 AM

So here I am at the end of week six in my quest to be a faster runner. I am now running at a 11:30 pace instead of 13:00. But I gotta confess it doesn't seem like much progress. I need to get down to 8:00min/mi to reach my goal (5k in 25:00) by June. I've got a long way to go. Can I drop 3:30 off my pace by then? I'm trying to have faith.

Coach Dunham, here are my miles for week 6.....14 miles(or so). (If I headed out right now for my usual Sunday run, I'd be at 18miles. So, I'm skipping my run today....but I'm kind of missing it. ho-hum)

Week 6:

Monday.......1hr spinnning class

Tuesday......45min on treadmill (3 to 4 miles)

Wednesday..track workout (3+ miles)

Thursday.....rest

Friday.........45 min on treadmill (3 to 4 miles)

Saturday.....4 miles

Sunday.......rest

Goal for next week....15 miles

Monday.........1hr spinning class

Tuesday........50 min on treadmill

Wednesday....track workout

Thursday.......rain day for Tues run

Friday...........rest

Sat..............4 miles

Sun..............4 miles

Last, but not least.....Here is some video of me feeling crabby yesterday morning before my run. My husband said to me,"Go. Go run. Come back happy." (I'm not usually this crabby.)

That is you being crabby?  Pretty mellow

Nice week.  You get down to 10 minutes in training and you'll have no problem doing 8's for a race.  Plenty of time to get to that point.

Keep up the good work.

Really?!  Just 10 min training gets me 8's for a race?  Can you explain how that works?  Maybe explain a little bit about the differences between running and racing?  I'm feeling a little skeptical about my ability to do it.

Sure.  You will be able to race about 2 minutes a mile faster than your training pace (when we get you to that point).  By then you will have a mileage base, lots of weeks of running and you will also have speed work.  When it gets closer we'll tailor your speed work for the 5k.  Running (training) should be pretty easy - conversation pace, racing will be at a pace you can maintain for 3.1 miles.  The percentage difference between training and racing pace projects out to about 10 minute miles in training equaling about 8 minute miles in race (for 5k).  A couple of other factors will be the mental approach to the race which will be different than just getting out the door for a run.  You'll spend some mental energy before the race preparing yourself for what is ahead.  If we plan it right you'll be pumped-up for the race and hit the line ready for a sub 25.  There is a lot of work that has to go in before you can put it on the line.....many miles of training for a few miles of racing.  The secret to racing well is.......there is no secret you just have to log miles and do speed work.  YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY!
