Week 22: The Tucson 5000 and Another Track Workout

Posted by MegNH on May 21, 2008 6:49:29 PM

On Sunday, I ran the Tucson 5000. It was about 75 degrees at the start of the race. By the end it felt like it was in the 80s. I started slower, like Dave told me to. It was kind of fun to watch the sea of people woosh past me, and then to zig-zag through them about a half a mile later. But, unfortunately, I ran too slow. The race felt really hard and I did my absolute best, pushing all the way, but I just didn't have it in me. I finished in 28:11....the heat, the long day before, and a little dehydration took their toll on me. I was really disappointed. I should have at least run closer to 27:00. Hopefully, I'll do better in June.

I took Monday and Tuesday off....due to exhaustion. I hit the track tonight but only did ok. Here's our workout: (I didn't keep track of rest times because I forgot my watch.)

200 (200 rest) :58

400 (200 rest) 1:56

800 (400 rest) 4:06

1200 (600 rest) 6:11

200 (200 rest) :52?

400 (200 rest) 1:59

800 4:05

(jogged 2200)

I also need to set goals for this week and report on last week, so here goes:

Week 22: 12 miles

Mon: off

Tues: 5 miles

Wed: skipped speed work because of knee

Thurs: no run, family obligations

Fri: no run, travel

Sat: 4 miles (border patrol and drunk driver morning)

Sun: 5k race in Tucson

Goal for Week 23:

Mon: off, travel

Tues: off

Wed: Track (5 miles)

Thurs: 5 miles

Fri: off

Sat: 5 miles

Sun: 5 miles

I'm hanging in there. Hopefully things will pick up over the next two weeks.

Don't be disappointed that time is fine.  Keep in mind that in addition to heat and family obligations you were also dealing with over 2,000' of elevation.  Not major, but a factor.

Keep a positive atitude, you are going to FLY down the course at Hollis

If you believe it, than i do too.  I'm wondering about warming up, though.  I seem to run my first mile significantly slower than my 3rd or 4th mile.  Should I be doing a longer warm-up before a race? (At the Tucson race, I jogged about 400 meters and stretched a little.)

Yes, I haven't addressed warm-up enough.  I would say do the 400 then stretch then do another 10 minutes VERY easy jogging, just enough to get the muscles warm.

Sounds like a plan.
