Week 11

Posted by MegNH Mar 2, 2008

How appropriate that on week 11 my pace has been at 11 min miles. Although, I think my 'conversation pace' has been slowly turning into 'faster than conversation pace.'

What is an appropriate average HR when running at a conversation pace?

Also, this week I've been sick (head/chest congestion). It hit me hardest on Tues and Wed. I think I'm now on the mend.

Week 11 .....16 miles

Mon: 1 mile & weights

Tues: off

Wed: 2 miles on treadmill

Thurs: 4+ miles on treadmill

Fri: off

Sat: 4 miles

Sun: 5 miles

Goal for Week 12.....18 miles

Mon: 2 miles & weights

Tues: off

Wed: 4 miles on treadmill

Thurs: 4 miles on treadmill

Fri: off

Sat: 4 miles

Sun: 4 miles

The weather is supposed to warm up this week. Bye-bye Frosty!!!! !DSCN0011.JPG!

More progress - yippy!

Posted by MegNH Feb 27, 2008

I'd like you to meet an enemy turned friend. She is still one of those friends in which everything she says has to be taken with a grain of salt. If ya know what I mean? But I enjoy our visits anyway.

I just realized that I've worn my I-feel-skinny jeans at least three times in the past week. So I hopped on the scale and wouldn't ya know it? I've lost about 5 pounds. My holiday weight is gone!   Yippy!!   With a lot of running, some nutrition, and a little luck the next 15 will come off as well.

I've been doing this for 10 weeks. I now see clear, believable progress. I'm running a little faster and feeling a little lighter.

And now I smell a diaper change coming around the corner. Gotta go.

Here's Coach Dave Dunham on the importance of a training partner:

Megan here:  Wow.  That's a tall order, coach.  I can see your point, though.  Commitment to a training partner would definitely get me out the door on those harder days.  There is a person I could ask.  She comes to track workouts, runs at my pace, and our kids are in school together.  I will ask her.

On a side note, I've been thinking about how I can revamp my weekly schedule to make my workouts more automatic....and less likely to be missed.  I have a few ideas I'll include in my next post.

Week 9: Dedication

Posted by MegNH Feb 17, 2008

Yesterday morning I headed out (16F degrees) for my run at 7:30am. My husband and kids were still snug in their beds. As the cold wind bit my face, I thought to myself, "why am I doing this?"

Just a few yards into my run (before I could shake off that negative voice in my head) I was startled by a man in his bathrobe wearing a norwegian-looking ski hat....at his mail box. As he looked at me from across the road he said only one word, "Dedication!"

The thing is, I wasn't feeling very dedicated. I was feeling cold. But that man (with only one word) encouraged me to hold my head a little higher, breath a little deeper, and actually feel dedicated while I finished my four miles. It's amazing what a person can do with just one word.

Week 9 totals: 13 miles

Mon: 1hr Spinning

Wed: postponed track workout for my knee

Thurs: went to the dome to make-up the track workout, but forgot my watch(argh!). 3 miles

Sat: 4 miles (feeling dedicated)

Sun: 70min on treadmill (6ish miles) It was great to be out of the elements and in control of the incline!

Goal for week 10: 16 miles

Mon: off

Tues: 50min treadmill (4.5 miles?)

Wed: Track (3.5 miles)

Thurs:off

Fri: weights

Sat: 4miles

Sun: 4miles

Totals so far:

Week 1: 10 miles

Week 2: 12 miles

Week 3: 10 miles

Week 4: 9 miles

Week 5: 7 miles

Week 6: 14 miles

Week 7: 9 miles

Week 8: 9 miles

Week 9: 13 miles

Note to my coach: This doesn't seem very consistent to me. If I'm running a race in June, when does the training need to be more serious? When do track workouts become more important? Should I be worried about missing that fourth run most weeks? Also wondering if I should do some practice races before June...just to get the feel of it?

Every Wed night when I'm running in circles (er, ovals rather) I ponder this question. I just always forget to ask. Here goes.....

Talking to a video camera is so much more awkward than one would initially think.

Although I'm not nearly as fast as the big bellied bunny in the pink suit, I am just as determined to keep going as he is.

Track workouts tonight.  We ran 3x1000s (500 rest).  My times were 5:25, 5:35, 5:28.  I really enjoy meeting other runners.  There are some really nice people who run slowly like me.

Week 7: It's getting harder

Posted by MegNH Feb 5, 2008

This weekend, my husband worked on Saturday and had to shop for a new car in the afternoon (his car's on its death bed).....no run for me.  On Sunday morning I wandered around the house in a sleep-deprived stupor.  I couldn't muster the courage to get out the door. I promised myself I'd do it later in the afternoon, when it warmed up.  I lied.  Instead I spent time with my neglected husband, I went sledding with the kids, and I did housework. I didn't run.

I've got serious cabin fever; I just want to hibernate.  It's getting harder to get myself out the door.  Maybe I need a treadmill at home.

Here are my week's totals for week 7:   9 miles

Mon: 1hr spinning class

Wed: Track Workout (4+ miles)

Thurs: 1 hr Treadmill (5ish miles)

Sat: 35min spinning, 45 min Pilates (at 9pm...in my basement)

Goal for coming week: Get more sleep!! In bed by 9!

Mon: Date w/ Husband

Tues: 50min treadmill

Wed: Track Workout

Thurs: rain day for tues run

Fri: Rest

Sat: 4 miles

Sun: 4 miles

Exhausted and a little depressed, but still going.

Well, I pulled myself together......fed and bathed the kids.....threw on my swanky new running clothes i'd forgotten i bought (from the New Balance outlet in Lawrence last Saturday)......and headed to the gym to slog it out on the treadmill.

I ran harder than I should on a training run (which still isn't very fast) because I needed to work off some negative energy.  It worked.  I ran for an hour and I feel much better.

Thanks Melissa and Dave for....well...being who you are.

One of those days...

Posted by MegNH Jan 31, 2008

I'm having one of those days....  you know the kind.... when you feel like giving up on your program.

Not enough sleep this week (or for the past 7 years).....My kids are crabby....The house is a mess....The laundry is piled up...The toddler won't nap....I didn't plan ahead and ate a donut for lunch.....I meant to workout before the kids got up, but didn't....I don't feel like I've got the energy to do it later.

So why am I writing this?....to try to force myself into it.  So my Dearest Active Blog, here it is.....I'm going to the gym tonight no matter what!!!   ...even if I have to wear dirty clothes and leave my unfed and unbathed kids with my poor husband.

All best,

Megan...not a candidate for mother of the year (at least not today, anyway)

Megan here:  What a view! Coach you've inspired me.  How long did it take you to snowshoe up that mountain?  Did you run?

Week 6 Mileage

Posted by MegNH Jan 27, 2008

So here I am at the end of week six in my quest to be a faster runner. I am now running at a 11:30 pace instead of 13:00. But I gotta confess it doesn't seem like much progress. I need to get down to 8:00min/mi to reach my goal (5k in 25:00) by June. I've got a long way to go. Can I drop 3:30 off my pace by then? I'm trying to have faith.

Coach Dunham, here are my miles for week 6.....14 miles(or so). (If I headed out right now for my usual Sunday run, I'd be at 18miles. So, I'm skipping my run today....but I'm kind of missing it. ho-hum)

Week 6:

Monday.......1hr spinnning class

Tuesday......45min on treadmill (3 to 4 miles)

Wednesday..track workout (3+ miles)

Thursday.....rest

Friday.........45 min on treadmill (3 to 4 miles)

Saturday.....4 miles

Sunday.......rest

Goal for next week....15 miles

Monday.........1hr spinning class

Tuesday........50 min on treadmill

Wednesday....track workout

Thursday.......rain day for Tues run

Friday...........rest

Sat..............4 miles

Sun..............4 miles

Last, but not least.....Here is some video of me feeling crabby yesterday morning before my run. My husband said to me,"Go. Go run. Come back happy." (I'm not usually this crabby.)

Coach Dunham is always full of words of encouragement. Never a reprimand...even if deserved. He is a great coach for a person like me. Here are his latest words of encouragement (or should I say entertainment?)....

Coach D, you crack me up...
