Southern California was a steam room all weekend with temps along the coast at 95 and, inland in my backyard Sunday, the thermometer reached 108!
KRISTIN CARROLL is so happy to have something to report from this Labor Day weekend. She and her husband, Tom, went to Mammoth Mountain to hike and ride their mountain bikes at 11,000 feet (one way to get out of the heat). Then they decided to run the Mammoth Rock 10K trail run on Labor Day. The course heads straight up then straight down at 8,000 feet in elevation. Ironman-finisher Kristin won her age group and was the second woman overall! Running USA team members Deena Kastor and Meg Keflezighi were the official starters for the race.
TOYA REAVIS ran the tough Balboa Park four-mile cross-country race in San Diego. I've run this course and it is one of the toughest four-mile CC courses in the country. She was the first masters 40-44 finisher and 14th female overall. She is getting stronger with each race and finished in 29:27.
!http://www.active.com/Assets/Outdoors/GrandCanyonCondor.jpg!Another hiker was LACEY SHAW and she did the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon. If you've never hiked this trail it is one to put on your to do list. Lacey went down the canyon then hiked along the west rim. She got a great shot of a rare California condor working the thermals on the canyon's rim.
The very popular Disney half-marathon was held in Anaheim on Labor Day. Active was on both sides of the event with a crew working the event and some running.
AMBER MARTIN said when she got out of her car at 5 a.m. in the morning the temp was already 91. They had three wave starts and she was in the first at 6 a.m. She did a great job running in 1:56 and not dropping out like so many runners did.
To better that, MELISSA CHRISTIAN who recently re-located to L.A. from the East Coast had a fast time of 1:53 and didn't mention anything about the heat. Way to block it out, Melissa!
Now the race would not have been a success if not for our outstanding crew from Active led by TARA KINCAID. JAMIE CAMERON, DIEGO ROVIRA AND CHRIS CARLSON all put in a hard HOT three days of work at the expo and on race day sacrificing their Labor Day weekend. Tare said it was the hottest she has ever been and the mile walk from the hotel to the expo was all the working out she wants to do this year. Thanks, guys, for making the Disney race a success.
