What's your ACTIVE?

June 2007

and many more

Posted by Active Toby Jun 27, 2007

Today is my 1-year anniversary with Active.com. I started my day by cycling 21 miles into work. I know that I wouldn't have done that a year ago.

This past year has been amazing and everyday, I feel blessed to be doing what I love and loving what I do.

When I chat with college friends who ask me how work is going, I always respond with the utmost enthusiasm which often times is in stark contrast to their response from the same question. I come to work every day with a smile and leave feeling great about my work and the direction I am heading in life. I know this is not something that everyone gets to experience and that is why I am very proud to be a member of this team. So, here is to another fantastic year!

Summer Travel

Posted by Trish18 Jun 22, 2007

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness" - Mark Twain

Now that summer is officially here (as of 1:06pm CST yesterday!) I'm ready to start crossing items off of my list of things to do and see this season. After reading the featured story in the Outdoor section, "[Next weekend: Freedomland U.S.A.: Twelve trips -- tailor-made for right now -- in the land of outdoor opportunity|http://a2.active.com/outdoors/Articles/Next_weekend__Freedomland_U_S_A_.htm]," I'm looking forward more than ever to a summer full of adventures and road trips.

I'll be visiting Portland to pay a visit to a former teammate of mine and to Mt. Hood, Wyoming to check out Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park, Oklahoma city to catch the World Cup of Softball, and Wisconsin to explore - if I make it back to Devil's Lake this summer, I'll try clipping in at Stetners Rock as recommended in the article. I've also always wanted to attempt the Berryman Trail in the Missouri Ozarks. The Ozarks are not too far from my home in St. Louis; one of my trips back to visit I'll get down there and give it a shot. I'll be blogging about my travel experiences, among other things, so check back if you are interested

Sad News

Posted by jspitzberg Jun 22, 2007

This was just posted by the Tri Club of San Diego:

It is with great sadness that we inform everyone of the death of TCSD President Jim McCann.

Jim died suddenly in his home last night, June 20. Jim was 46 years old

Jim joined the Triathlon Club of San Diego in 1988.  He was Race Director from 1997-1999.  He has been the club President since the year 2000 during which time the club has grown from a few hundred members to one approaching 1800 members.

We will do our best to keep you all informed of memorial services and how you can send your condolences.

In the meantime, please keep Dee Dee and her and Jim's family in your thoughts and prayers.

---

This is indeed sad news.  Jim was an enthusiastic triathlete and a great ambassador for the (multi-) sport community.  He brought a level of fun, and an acceptance of competitors of all skill-levels, to the SD Tri Club that will be a proud legacy.  All of our best wishes go out to his family and friends at this time.

After a long day online

Posted by ActiveAdmin Jun 21, 2007

See the image below to see how I look after a long day online. Instead of forcing readers to view an ugly picture of myself, I got my always beautiful 5 month old girl to do her best impression of daddy.

Have Patience

Posted by ActiveAdmin Jun 21, 2007

"Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish."

~ John Quincy Adams, diplomat, politician, writer and 6th president of the U.S. (1767-1848)

I'm a new father and definitely in no hurry to see my daughter grow up. I just hope I can teach her the two hardest values I've learned in life (didn't quite set in when I was a kid), which are patience and perseverance. My grandmother used to make me sing that old song "Have patience... don't be in such a hurry." Know it?

SALT LAKE CITY -- Often celebrated as the best defender the United States has ever produced, Eddie Pope announced Thursday that he will retire from Major League Soccer at the end of the 2007 season.

I''m not sure what to say. I have to admit to being a little sad, and I'm not sure I can quite capture my emotions fully in this post. But the Pontiff is retiring. Definitely the end of an era.

Pope was the shy kid out of North Carolina who wore #23 in honor of fellow alum Michael Jordan. He was the rookie of the year and stand-out defender on a team full of more experienced and well-known players. Of course, he scored the header in stoppage time that won DC the first of their now four MLS Cup championships. And he famously, or at least for me memorably, turned down interest from Europe to stay close to home.

So many memories of my young adulthood are tied up with DC United and it's hard to avoid the sense that an era in my life is passing too. I'm no longer in DC, and no longer a young adult.  Pope is with Real Salt Lake (and to paraphrase ESPN's Sports Guy, "He never played for NY. Can we all agree that that just never happened?"). But I get nostalgic when my friend Neal text messages me from RFK as he did this weekend. And this news is a bit of a bolt out of the clear blue sky -- even though I'll always associate the Pontiff with the pouring rain in which he won his first two DCU championships, the second of which I was lucky enough to attend.

Okay, I'm officially babbling. Back to work, but not without one final chant of "Ooh ah! Eddie Pope! I said Ooh ah, Eddie Pope!"

Rock and Roll all morning

Posted by jspitzberg Jun 14, 2007

Didn't have quite the Rock and Roll experience that Toby did , nor is my Active Video-fu as strong as his, but I did take my daughter to watch the marathon and cheer on the runners.  Mile 2 swings about a mile from our house so we made an early trip over to Park and Zoo Drive.  Great atmosphere with a blues band jamming and middle- and high-school cheerleading teams lining the road.  Lots of family and friends scanned the crowd for particular runners, but cheered for the whole flood of people.

We used to live at mile 17, where they set up a medical tent every year.  And I have to admit that it's a lot more fun to see the race start -- when everyone is full of enthusiasm and the worst you see is someone pulling over to the side to re-tie a shoe or duck behind a tree to relieve their... um, nerves -- than it is to see all the blisters, bruises, and beaten spirits that can pile up over the miles.

Weekend at Active

Posted by Active Toby Jun 9, 2007

Team,

It was a Triathlon Weekend here at Active.  The local Carlsbad Triathlon consisting of a 1K Swim – 25K Bike – 5K Run was held on Sunday morning.  We had 4 brave souls battle the rough surf in the mighty Pacific.

I will start according to how they did in their respective age groups.

ALYSON TYSON aka CHICKEN was no chicken in the S-B-R.  She had an overall time of 1:42:29 which placed her a very high 10th in the W 20-24 age group.  Great job leading the way for Active!

MAREA BLUE was another strong W 20-24 performer with a total time of 1:54:25; this placed Marea 16th in her age group.

A newer Active team member to the events team making her mark was SHANNON TURNER who had a fast time of 1:46:32.  Shannon is in the always competitive W 30-34 age group and placed 27th, this was also one of the largest Women’s age groups of the day. Shannon did say she is training hard for the AFC ½ and this was just a stepping stone.

AND last but not least is our resident Triathlon expert ERIC MCCUE who must have spent a ton of time training for this (yeah right!).  Eric’s time was a fast 1:33:08 but placed lower than all our girls in is age group at 35th.  We heard rumor he got spanked on the bike!

We did have another person run on July 4th I missed and that was JENNA CHABOT who ran the Scripps 10K in 58:25.

And I can’t wait to hear about the climb up Mt. Whitney this weekend by a few of our team members lead by VICKY EYDELBERG.

Way to stay ACTIVE!

Weekend at Active Again

Posted by Active Toby Jun 9, 2007

Team,

We can never forget our team sports men and women still competing at a high level.  This is cool because we had 2 Active team members battling each other on opposite teams.

DIEGO ROVIRA’S Nomads team played and defeated ALEX ROMAGNOLO’S (ROMO) team in the semi-finals of the 6 a side soccer tournament at Rob field.  The Nomads went undefeated to win it all and the fleet footed former St. Mary’s D1 standout DIEGO scored a goal in every game they played!

Way to go boys!

Mike

A great tool I use to keep up on updates & news from my favorite sites without having to waste time browsing them constantly is RSS Popper - http://rsspopper.blogspot.com/2004/10/download.html

Simply install and configure it within Outlook so as soon as updates are made on your favorite blogs/sites that have an RSS feed you will recieve an email that contains everything that was on the post as if you visited the site (if full feeds are enabled).

This isnt a notification email rather something you can read now or store for later to read while never having to waste your time visiting the site to see if anything new is up.

You can use this for the Active Community blog here if you want to be aware of & see immediately any new posts or comments - simply copy the link of the Orange RSS button on this page next to your choice of Blog Post RSS feed or Comment RSS feed.
