Labor Day Weekend

Posted by IMVoice Sep 7, 2010

ALEX AFANDI Dedicated the weekend to lifeguarding Torry Pines State Beach. It was slower than usual but a good weekend overall. While on breaks, I ran the Torrey Pines State Reserve three days in a row. I gave tower lifeguards breaks which also requires running between towers.Alex-Beach.jpg

EMILY JOLLER, Acct Mgr running this weekend went up to Anaheim to run the Disneyland Half Marathon.  It was perfect running weather since it started at 6am.  I ran 1:30:22 and placed 3rd in my age division.

JANETTE KIM reports Picture one is the CityChase in Vancouver, BC. It’s the low-key version of Fear Factor meets Amazing Race in Vancouver. Unlike previous years, I didn't have to eat a bug, but I did have to carry a tarantula. Did I mention that I have a phobia of spiders?  Pictures 2 & 3: Skydiving in Abbotsford, BC.  Jumping out of a plane at 10,000 feet and landing in 6 minutes. You have a genuine fear for your life for the first few seconds and the rest is easy sailing and just a rush. The second picture was taken when floating down with the parachute... yes; I look a little bit crazy; you would, too, at 4,000 feet above the ground.

BURT REPINE, Sr. Software Engineer just returned from a week long blast-thru of Central/Northern California.  He started the trip by mountain-biking a 14er (White Mountain, 14252') and finished it with a solo climb of Mt. Whitney (14,495') via the Mountaineer's Route (Class III). In between, he also managed to mountain-bike the epic Flume Trail in Lake Tahoe, root his Mom on to an age-group win in the Alcatraz Triathlon, and meander around Yosemite Valley.

JIM GARFIELD(M&M) joined Michael Johnson, CEO Herbalife and Chris Mansalillo, CEO Exercise T.V and a few other execs for an epic ride through the Santa Monica mountains in preparation for this coming weekends Nautica Malibu Triathlon. With over 4,000 participants it should be an epic event!

CARMEL CINCO, Software Consultant with her husband has been wanting to visit the caves at Horne Lake on Vancouver Island (   We finally made the trip last weekend and took the 5hr Extreme Rappel tour.  The caves were amazing!  We crawled through tight spaces and rappelled down a 70ft “rain barrel” to see spectacular underground formations which were formed over centuries.  Although rappelling down the 70ft rain barrel and then climbing back up had its own excitement, the best part was caving in the dark.  On the way back out of the caves, we turned off our headlamps for one section and had to feel our way through the small spaces.  Absolutely fantastic and highly recommended!

PAUL MCLURE, Account Manager ran the Philip Rivers 5K on Saturday morning. The weather was perfect for the event, nice and cool. The after food was some of the best for an event - IHOP supplied a nice plate of pancakes and eggs!!

MATTHEW COX from the Burnaby office went backpacking sans kids with wife and brother-in-law and friend up to Yellow Aster Butte in the Mount Baker Wilderness area in Washington State. A very steep 1500’ climb in 1.5 miles was a strenuous start but rewarded by great views at the top. Total climb about 2000’ to alpine meadows with tarns and unlimited blueberries. We camped overnight to below freezing temps and then the hiked back down with now misty views and what felt like a great book end to our active summer.

SHANNON WINEMAN (Project Manager, IT/IS) ran with her husband Mark, two daughters and some friends in the Philip Rivers Inaugural 5K in Liberty Station this weekend. The event raised money for adoptions and foster families. It was perfectly cloudy weather (a summer 2010 staple) and the run was a fun two lap course. Thanks to the fellow Active Network employee who yelled “Go ActiveX” right at the finish line! My husband and I are also signed up for the upcoming CAF Tour De Cove.
