This was the first annual Radiant Lake Triathlon in Rathdrum, Idaho sponsored by my triathlon club, Tri-Fusion. This was a 1/2 mile swim in a man-made lake/pond, followed by a 14 mile bike ride and then a 3 mile run. I felt really good overall. I could have shaved off 10-15 seconds in transition and maybe a few more on the run. I say this because I was 23 seconds away from finishing first in my age group (35-39).
My official times are as followed:
Swim: 16:24 (2:03, 100 pace)
Bike: 38:44 (21.53 mph pace)
Run: 24:29 (7:54 pace - 8:19, 7:50, 7:29)
I was very happy with my bike. I always seem to start out somewhat slow but once I catch my breath and settle into a rhythm I begin cruising. I ended up getting passed twice... well once if you don't count Haley Cooper-Scott (Professional Triathlete). I came out of the water within seconds of my fellow Tri-Fusion member, Eric Byrd (pictured below on my left). We traded positions twice during the early stages of the bike but then I was able to stay in front; I kept my eye on him though, I wasn't sure how strong of a runner he was. My confidence on the run isn't very high but lately I've been pushing it a little harder.
I had a decent lead on Eric coming into T2. My goal was to not let him pass me. After mile one or so, I spotted another fellow Tri-Fusion member, Craig Thorsen (pictured below) catching up to me. I know Craig is a good runner but he's coming off a minor knee surgery so I had no idea his level of fitness. Craig was in my rear view mirror the entire run. I manage to stay in front of him and actually pulled away toward the end; to my surprise. As you can see by my split times above, I got faster with each mile.
I'm very happy with my overall results and effort especially considering my recent health issues. Out of 106 finishers, I was 22nd! There were 8 men in my age division but only the top three were awarded medals. I feel great about finishing 2nd.
Last weekend was the Iron Eagle Sprint Triathlon, this weekend was the Radiant Lake Sprint Triathlon and next weekend is the biggie, Ironman Boise 70.3 (Half Ironman).
Thank you for following my adventures and enjoy the video (Many thanks to Melissa & Steve for shooting all the footage).
