•     So why did we start running?

” Why did you start running? Do you come from a long line of runners? Nothing else to do and its better then watching tv? Perhaps you're a criminal and you need to build get-away speed? Seen others do it and you hate to miss out on anything?”

•     Hydration Gear on Long Runs: What to use

” Triathlete training for her first marathon and would like any advice on hydration gear during long training runs: have a 2-bottle hydration belt, but those little curved bottles really don't hold much.”

•     Endurance build up?

“ I've been running for 3 months now and would like to know why I'm feeling spent so often. Two weeks ago I was able to run 3.5 miles without feeling to spent.”

•     What do you think about when swimming?

” Terry Laughlin's newest article talks about how some people zone out during activity in order to avoid thinking about pain, distance or whatever. He remarks that he once swam 9 miles with Louie, Louie stuck in his head.”

•     Critical Mass Cyclist Assaulted by NYPD

“ I just read an interesting article in the New York Times regarding the investigation against an NYPD police officer in the Critical Mass YouTube video shown below.”

•     Training for ½ Running on Grass

“ I am new to running,(at 48 yrs) as is never run before. I started running (slowly) in May and in July decided to train for a 1/2 in November. I have just done my longest run ever, 5 miles without stopping, using a training schedule I downloaded from RunnersWorld, on Monday I will try for 6.”

Ironman races are often known for particular weather: Arizona's heat, Florida's humidity, Kona's...everything. Athletes, spectators and fans will always remember the 2008 Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid for the sometimes torrential downpours that soaked the 10th anniversary event.

Yet despite the continuously wet weather, 2,345 competitors finished the race. And then it quickly sold out for 2009. Clearly, Lake Placid has become a favorite among North American triathletes.

You can watch a highlight video narrated by Paula Newby-Fraser and Michael Lovato at the NA Sports website .

Francisco Pontano of Spain (above) won the men's race in 8:43:42. Caitlin Shea-Kenney claimed the women's title in 9:51:00. Read a wrap-up of the events here.

Before you head out for your weekend, check out some of this week's best posts from the Cool Running and Active communities:

•      Missed workouts

”I was supposed to run 5 miles yesterday but was so dog tired that I couldn't do it. I didn't get up this morning to do it either because I still felt like I needed to sleep. This is the miserable kind of tired I am talking about.”

•      Take your vitamins! Interesting article on endurance athletes

”So the question arises, do athletes need to take vitamins? The answer, if you follow the scientific literature, is absolutely! In fact, athletes need more vitamins and minerals than the average person.”

•      How to draft in the water?

“Should you be right behind the person? A few yards back? Off to the side a little? I tried it yesterday right behind a person (about 2 feet back) and felt like was working against the persons kick turbulence. Is there another way?”

•      Weekly running milage for Sprint Tri?

”I am currently training for 2 Sprint Tri's this summer, and was just wondering what is a good average for my weekly running mileage?? I have a very strong swimming background and the bike I don't have to worry about either..it all comes down to the run.”

•      New to Triathlon

“I am a 57 year old female that has never entered anything like a race. I have been swimming for an hour every day for the past year and would like to kick up my workouts.”

•      Wednesday's runs

“OK, 6 miles for me today in 72 degree heat and 84% humidity. Not bad at a 8:36 pace. Still need to get faster though. The forecast is looking pretty good though after this weekend with overnight lows back in the 60s in the DC area.”

•     What is it like ?

“I'm a new runner and I've been reading the running forums a lot and hear people talk about these long runs they go on , I was just wondering , how does it feel different from when you were outta shape only being able to run .5 mile compared to now when you can run 3 miles.”

•     Badwater 135 Tracker

”Check it out, the Badwater 135 started this morning. These amazing athletes are making their way through the heat of Death Valley to Mount Whitney Portal.”

•      Great Quotes

“You only ever grow as a human being if you're outside your comfort zone.”

•      Sometimes I feel like I don't belong

“Ok, so I'm not Toby or Jimmy who run thousands of miles a week, and I am yet to finish a marathon under 4. But, I still consider myself a marathoner and sometimes I find it hard to identify myself with other folks.”

•      Missed workouts

”I was supposed to run 5 miles yesterday but was so dog tired that I couldn't do it. I didn't get up this morning to do it either because I still felt like I needed to sleep. This is the miserable kind of tired I am talking about.”

•     How many days a week should I run?

”Is there any problem with me running a mile 7 days a week at night since I am still pretty slow? Should I just walk on the days I do not run?”

•     iPods now being allowed at Dallas marathon

“Based on runner input, we have updated the guidelines on iPods and other audio devices and will no longer prohibit them. Since our course is a closed course during the term of the event, wearing an iPod WILL NOT result in disqualification in and by itself. If wearing an iPod or audio device results in you not hearing or obeying race instructions, you could be disqualified.”

•      Autism Speaks 5K - Race Report

“It was a fantastic morning for us! Things were quite frenetic as soon as we arrived at the Potomac Library - my wife and I had family members to get signed up, donations to turn in, race numbers to pickup, race shirts to pick up, about 20 team members to find, about 25 team t-shirts to hand out, race numbers to pin on, including helping kids (although I totally forgot to pin my own bib on!), and some team pictures to arrange.”

•      LOSS OF TOENAILS

“LOST 2 NAILS AFTER PHILADELPHIA, 5 AFTER FRED. MARYLAND. HAVE TRIED SHOES WITH WIDE TOE BOX AND EVERY SOCK MADE. WOULD LOVE TO KEEP ALL NAILS AFTER MCM. FEET ARE UGLY ENOUGH. ALSO HAVE TROUBLE WITH NAUSEA AFTER MARATHONS. YES ITS ME AT THE FINISH LINE PUKING. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.”

•     Recovering from long runs

"Jimmy, you don't get to answer this, because you don't need to recover from 15 mile runs. They are a mere skip in the park for you! But the rest of you mortals for whom 15 miles seems pretty durn long, how quickly do you recover from your long runs?"

•     Using a Mtn Bike

I'm getting ready for my first tri (sprint distance) and only have a mountain bike. Does anyone have suggestions for technique and what an average pace would be for 15 - 20 mile rides?"

•     Half the Year is Gone...What have you Done?

“I've been gone for awhile...I've been rehabing a right leg injury since the end of May and have only run about 13 miles since then but have been continuing with my cross training.”

•     Jay’s Week That Was: Baltimore 1 of 16

“I am now officially in training for the Baltimore Marathon on October 11. I hope that this blog will illustrate what training to race 26.2 miles can look like, at least for this 38-year-old husband/father/teacher. There is no way to know how (or even if) I will finish, but this will be the real journey.”

•     Ammonia Smelling Sweat

“Sometimes when I run a long training run (upwards of 12 miles or so) at the end, I feel like I can "taste" or "smell" ammonia. I've always assumed that this is caused by my body depleting all my glycogen stores and going into ketosis.”

•     Keeping Motivated and Fighting Burnout

“Today I had really tough run. At eight miles, it wasn't necessarily the distance this time, but I think I've been a little sore for some time. Anyway, it was the most worn out I've felt for some time and I think I'm starting to lose a bit of spirit and motivation. Lately I've been feeling a little frustrated that I haven't been improving as quickly as I'd like.”

•     FYI: Less than six months until Christmas.

Just trying to cool things off a bit. Hope it helps. BTW, I want a Garmin 405 and some good motion control trail running shoes. Oh, and whirled peas.
