The 40th ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1, 2009 was a memorable and historic event with the first U.S. race champion since 1982 - Meb Keflezighi and the largest marathon field in the sport's history - 43,741 runners and 43,475 finishers (a 99.4% completion rate). Below is a summary of fast facts for the flagship marathon in 2009:

Run Boston in 2010

CONCORD, Mass. -- Applications are now available for running in the Boston Marathon(R) as part of the Melanoma Foundation of New England's marathon team, Running for Cover.  With Bill Rodgers back again as the honorary team captain, the Foundation is looking forward to another successful Marathon year.

 

Runners can go to www.mfne.org and download an application for Boston. The fundraising minimum is $3,250 for invitational runners, and $350 for qualified runners (runners who ran a previous marathon fast enough to qualify for Boston).  Applicants will be notified in mid-November if they make the team. Team members receive Running for Cover apparel, fundraising tips, training support including meetings with Bill Rodgers, and the satisfaction of knowing they will make a very real difference in the fight against melanoma. Last year's Running for Cover team raised over $200,000 through the Boston Marathon.

 

Melanoma is now the fastest growing cancer in the United States -- in fact, one person dies each hour from the disease. However, if detected in the early stages, melanoma can usually be treated successfully. The Foundation is committed to improving the statistics by educating the public about the need for early detection and prevention and by offering programs to help patients and their families cope with melanoma.

 

Skin cancer is the number one diagnosed cancer in the United States, and melanoma is the most preventable of all cancers. The Melanoma Foundation of New England was founded in 1999 and is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization.

Congratulations to Meb Keflezighi who ran a personal best of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 15 seconds on Sunday at the New York City Marathon and became the first American to win the race in 27 years. Monday night, he joined David Letterman on the Late Show to present "The Top 10 Thoughts That Go Through Your Mind When Running The New York City Marathon."

Congrats to Brazilian Marcos Farinazzo, who won the 2009 Badwater Ultramarathon today in an impressive sub-24 hour finish, coming in at  23:39:18! He was the only sub-24 hour finisher this year, and was more than an hour ahead of second place finisher, Oswaldo Lopez.

 

Farinazzo, age 40, is the 2008 men’s champion and course record holder of the Brazil 135 Ultramarathon.

An exciting, record-breaking day of racing closed the 2009 XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series on Saturday in Malibu. Almost 750 runners stepped up to the start line of what race director Brennan Lindner called "the perfect XTERRA course with a little bit of everything. Runners had to tackle steep climbs, sweet single track, and long descents. It was a killer race that really pushed everyone to their limits."

 

No stranger to the XTERRA SoCal Series after winning the last two races, triathlete legend Heather Fuhr, 41 from Encinitas, beat her own 2008 course record by one minute finishing in just 1 hour, 47 minutes, 34 seconds. Chasing her was Culver City resident Mary Lockton, 31, crossing the line almost 2½ minutes behind Fuhr to claim the runner-up position.

 

Los Angeles local and City of Angels Half-Marathon champion Romualdo Sanchez, 39, won the 22-kilometer event in 1:38:53, beating Newbury Park's Jonathan Tolker by three minutes. Sanchez, a SoCal running star, also has his sights on the LA Marathon coming up in just two weeks.

 

In addition to the main half-marathon distance Xduro event, a fun 6-kilomter race took part in the day's festivities. Jaakko Hiekkatanta of Lexington, KY and Kyle Legones of Huntington Beach won the men's and women's races in 27:14 and 30:01, respectively.

 

Not only did the course reward runners with amazing views of the Pacific Ocean, they were met at the finish line with the welcome sight of a hot breakfast consisting of eggs, muffins and tons of cold Gatorade.

 

While it's sad to see the 2009 XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series come to an end, Regional champions will be crowned and invited to race for free in the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship coming up on Sunday, September 13 in Bend, Ore. Hannah Rae Finchamp, a 13-year old from Altadena, who has clinched one of these coveted titles said, "The XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series puts on the best races. I love the challenges XTERRA provides that make me dig a little deeper to find energy and strength I didn't think I had."

SAN FRANCISCO -- The ING Bay to Breakers and San Francisco police and City officials have announced several new policies that will be enforced to improve the safety and enjoyment of the race for runners, spectators and neighbors during this year's 98th running of the ING Bay to Breakers on Sunday, May 17.

 

"We have listened closely to concerns from race participants, residents along the race course, and civic leaders. In response to safety, logistical and trash issues, we are instituting new policies in cooperation with the San Francisco Police Department and City officials," said Angela Fang, general manager of the race.

 

"The ING Bay to Breakers is about promoting community, physical fitness, and giving athletes and fitness enthusiasts the chance to compete in and enjoy one of the most exhilarating and scenic footraces in the world. We're still focused on the fun, vitality and unique culture of the race - we're just removing the alcohol and the hazards. We feel that these changes will enhance the race experience for all involved," Fang added.

 

The following changes have been made to the 98th ING Bay to Breakers, as well as future races:

 

 

  • Zero tolerance policy on alcohol. Anyone openly drinking alcohol or displaying public drunkenness will be subject to fines and prosecution.

  • All wheeled objects and floats are prohibited. Inappropriate equipment on the streets is dangerous and can prevent runners and walkers from completing the race in a timely manner.

  • Leave no footprint. Additional dumpsters will be placed along the course for trash.

 

"We are all working together to enforce these new zero tolerance policies," said Jim Lynch, assistant chief of the San Francisco Police Department. "We want to ensure that the 2009 ING Bay to Breakers is a safe and enjoyable event for everyone - race participants, families, residents and spectators included."

 

"The North Panhandle Neighborhood Association is supportive of the ING Bay to Breakers race instituting a zero tolerance policy for alcohol possession and public drinking. We want to see the race get back to its roots and focus on the sport of running, the celebration of San Francisco's diversity and the spirit of community. In recent years, the level of alcohol consumption has overpowered the event and made the race displeasing for the neighborhoods through which it runs," said Kevin Rafter, president of the association.

 

Fang called the ING Bay to Breakers race "a celebration of the unique spirit of San Francisco. Thousands of costumed participants, families and neighborhood residents from diverse communities come to cheer on professional and recreational runners and walkers," she said. "In keeping with both the integrity of the athletic competition and the fun, welcoming spirit of the race, we ask that participants and spectators respect the race route and the communities along the race course. This means leaving alcohol and wheeled floats at home, and putting trash and recyclables in their proper place."

 

In further support of the community, ING Bay to Breakers pays the City of San Francisco several hundred thousand dollars in fees, generates millions of dollars in travel and tourism and creates hundreds of event-related jobs for local community youth groups and schools. The race also makes significant contributions to a number of local charities.

 

The race draws approximately 65,000 participants and 100,000 spectators to San Francisco. The ING Bay to Breakers 12K was recently named by ESPN as one of the "101 things all sports fans must experience before they die," and already more than 6,000 registrants have signed up for the May 17 race. Fang assures that by adopting these new measures, "we are ensuring that runners, walkers and spectators enjoy a safe, fun event."

Typically a late February/early March race, the L.A. Marathon is moving to Memorial Day for 2009. This article in the L.A. Times takes a look at the pros and (mostly) cons of the change, particularly the fact that a late season race date means warmer weather and potentially slower times.

*Philadelphia, PA* -- Anne Mahlum is a veteran marathoner who rose early most mornings to run on the dark streets of Philadelphia--often with homeless men cheering her on as she passed their shelter.

 

Instead of just waving and smiling, Mahlum thought she'd try and get them running with her. She contacted the shelter, got donations of running gear, and in July 2007 the Back On My Feet running club hit the streets. 

 

The first day, Mahlum led nine shelter residents in a mile-long run. Today, Back on My Feet has teams at five Philadelphia shelters, with more than 90 members and more than 400 volunteers. The simple concept has developed into a comprehensive program that offers connections to job training, educational scholarships and housing assistance. The benefits of Back on My Feet are earned through the currency of attitude, commitment, teamwork, respect, dedication and leadership.

 

CNN Heroes and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter honored Mahlum at City Hall on Thursday, November 13, 2008, in anticipation of "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute" later this month that will spotlight ordinary citizens accomplishing extraordinary deeds. Mahlum was named one of ten CNN Heroes honorees last month, out of nearly 4,000 nominations from 75 countries and is the only honoree with an athletically-focused endeavor in the CNN Heroes Top 10.

 

"Running really is a metaphor for life," said Mahlum. "There is always another mile. You just have to take it one step at a time."

 

A Blue Ribbon Panel made up of distinguished humanitarians and leaders, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodall and Earvin "Magic" Johnson, selected Mahlum for her work to give people experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia a sense of community and accomplishment through physical fitness. She will be awarded $25,000 and is eligible for the $100,000 prize that will be bestowed upon the CNN Hero of the Year later this month. 

 

The public will select the "CNN Hero of the Year" via voting at the CNN Heroes site at www.CNN.com/Heroes through Thursday, November 20 at 6 a.m. Eastern. At a November gala, CNN will honor the 10 heroes and reveal the CNN Hero of the Year. Hosted by Anderson Cooper from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute will air globally on CNN, CNN International and CNN en Español on Thanksgiving, November 27, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).

•     How can I swim faster?

“I've done about 5 sprint tri's and I'm really slow on the swim. I can do the distance. I don't know if I should focus on kicking more or there is something about my form, or I'm just not strong enough.”

•     Too soon to run a 1/2 marathon?

“I am on week five of the couch to 5K from coolrunning.com. There is a half marathon on Oct 11 I want to run. That would mean I would finish my couch to 5K program the third week of July and jump right into the build up for the half-marathon.”
