San Diego, Calif - Some of the world's most accomplished and inspirational physically challenged athletes will take center stage at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City for the third annual A Celebration of Heroes, Heart and Hope gala (Heroes, Heart and Hope) on June 10 to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). The gala event, which this year will honor Mark Holowesko - the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of Holowesko Partners Ltd. - raised more than $800,000 in 2008 to fund handcycles, running prosthetics and other specialized equipment to help physically challenged athletes overcome the economic barriers that far too often prevent them from participating in sports and athletic activities.

"CAF's message of heroes, heart and hope will be a breath of fresh air for New York area supporters during these tough economic times," said Scott Stackman, Senior Vice President of UBS Financial Services Inc. and Chairman of the Heroes, Heart and Hope gala organizing committee. "Our goal at this event is to continue to raise awareness in the New York Tri-State area of what is possible given the right resources, and raise funds to get more physically challenged athletes off the sidelines and into the game."

The Heroes, Heart and Hope gala will also recognize sports legends and celebrities like Ironman greats Paula Newby-Fraser, Dave Scott and Scott Tinley, but the real stars will be the more than 20 physically challenged athletes - from kids to Hawaii Ironman finishers, from trailblazers to troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan - who are supported by CAF and will attend the event. Their stories of breaking barriers and perseverance will be showcased during the evening's program. Highlighted athletes will include:

  • New York's own Sam Cila. An American hero, who joined the New York National Guard after September 11, was injured in Iraq on July 4, 2005 and subsequently lost his hand. Sam continues to heal through sports.

  • David Gelfand. Born with the same condition as CAF Spokesperson and CBS's Amazing Race reality star Sarah Reinertsen - his idol, this young Weston, Connecticut native, an above-knee amputee, offers hope to other physically challenged kids.

  • Deanna Babcock. A competitive athlete her whole life, she was devastated when she lost her leg after suffering a heart attack at the young age of 23. Now with a new running foot, she's back into sport, and back into life.

  • Ricky James. When a motocross accident went horribly wrong, he lost the use of his legs, but not his competitive spirit.

The spirited live auction at the Heroes, Heart and Hope gala boasts a coveted spot in the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, (donated by Ironman) which last year was won with a $45,000 bid. Individuals unable to attend the Heroes, Heart and Hope gala will be able place proxy bids on the Ironman slot ahead of the event. Go to http://www.challengedathletes.org/ for details and rules.

"Tickets and sponsorship opportunities for this inspirational evening are still available" said Virginia Tinley, CAF's Executive Director. "Sponsors already on-board include: Ironman, Major League Baseball, Men's Health, and UBS Private Wealth Management, and it's through their support, that this uplifting evening is made possible."

The Heroes, Heart and Hope gala begins at 6 pm with cocktails and a silent auction in the Astor Salon. The dinner and program begin at 7:30 pm in the Grand Ballroom. The Waldorf=Astoria is located at 301 Park Ave in New York. For more information, or to purchase tickets, go to: http://www.heroesheartandhope.com/. Tickets to the event are $500.

On June 13, CAF athletes participating in the Heroes, Heart and Hope gala will hold a special multisport clinic, sponsored by Accenture at Asphalt Green (York Ave. between 90th and 92nd Streets in Manhattan) for local physically challenged athletes. For more information, contact: Jill@challengedathletes.org.

Since 1994, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) has raised more than $21 million and satisfied more than 4,000 requests for funding from challenged athletes around the world via its Access for Athletes program. Through its other programs - Catch a Rising Star (mentoring and introduction to sports), Operation Rebound (for U.S. military personnel and first responders injured while serving) and Reach High (community outreach), the organization reaches an additional 65,000 individuals per year. In 2009, CAF distributed more than $1.36 million in funding to 765 individuals in 49 U.S. states and 25 countries. SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - April 23, 2009 - Trips for Kids (TFK) today announced it has taken 50,000 underserved urban youth on mountain bike rides since its inception more than 20 years ago.

"I'm proud that our efforts have helped thousands of young people experience the world's natural beauty and the excitement of completing a physical challenge--and so many more still need our help," said Marilyn Price, founding director of Trips for Kids.

"There are more young people than ever who need to get outside, understand how to take care of our environment, spend a day with caring, supportive adults, and get tired from good, enjoyable exercise."

More than 60 chapters advance the TFK mission. Located in a variety of communities, the groups identify at-risk youth and work through local youth services agencies to help them. Chapters are formed by a variety of individuals and organizations including environmental centers, schools, public health agencies, after-school learning centers, bike advocacy clubs, and non-profits like the YMCA, Boy Scouts, and Girls & Boys Clubs.

In many cases the kids they serve have never visited the nearby parks and outdoor areas. TFK provides the bicycles, helmets and other equipment, along with a trained ride leader and adult volunteers.

The children who participate in the rides receive safety instructions and are paired with adult ride buddies. Throughout the ride they learn environmental awareness as well as nutrition and fitness tips. Many of the participants report that the TFK mountain bike rides teach them to set goals and achieve them.

It takes TFK chapter leaders, volunteers, bicycle industry sponsors and individual donors to make TFK rides successful. Visit the TFK website, www.tripsforkids.org, to learn more about the program and to find a local chapter.

About Trips for Kids

Trips for Kids is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization based in Marin County, California. With 60-plus chapters operating in the United States, Canada and Israel, Trips For Kids opens the world of cycling to at-risk youth through mountain bike rides and Earn-A-Bike programs. Trips for Kids started in 1988 as a grass roots effort by avid mountain biker, environmentalist and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee Marilyn Price to provide inner-city youth a way to enjoy the outdoors and gain much-needed life skills.

Fueled by success in the San Francisco Bay Area, the national organization was launched in 1999 with the expanded mission to open as many chapters as possible in order to provide kids with lessons in personal responsibility, achievement and environmental awareness through the development of practical skills and the simple act of having fun through mountain biking.

For a seventh consecutive year, World Triathlon Corporation will conduct its annual Ironman auction with eBay, designed to benefit a variety of charitable organizations worldwide. The Ironman Foundation has raised more than $2,500,000 through the initiative since its inception in 2003.

This year's auction will include four slots to the 2009 Ford Ironman World Championship taking place on October 10 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The auction will begin on Sunday, April 19 and will incorporate four phases with one slot available per week. The minimum bid for slots to the event will begin at $10,000.   In 2008, Ironman recognized a multitude of groups that lent their support in each of the event market in addition to those organizations located in the two World Championship host cities. For example, a donation of $50,000 was extended to Clearwater for Youth (CFY), an organization that celebrated 40 years of service last year. With a mission of building character through sports, CFY provides support to area youth programs and participants in need, allowing children from all levels of society to play and learn together.

Grants and donations were also made to the West Hawaii chapters of the following national organizations: The Ronald McDonald House, Boy Scouts of America, American Cancer Society and the Special Olympics, among others. Additionally, more than $40,000 in cash and supplies will be provided to The Hospice of Kona, PATH (Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii) and Kamakana Children's Playground in Kailua-Kona. Details on the organizations are below:
    • The Hospice of Kona will receive gear and apparel for Camp Erin, a bereavement retreat for children who have lost a parent or sibling.

    • PATH, striving to promote active living in a healthy community, will be acquiring a cargo van for use with camps and clinics that promote a bicycle education program to local families.

    • Kamakana Children's Playground, located at Higashihara Park was created in 1997 and is in desperate need of repair. The children's area is now being refurbished and will include 2,200 sq. ft. playground.

In addition to the opportunity to compete at the 2009 Ford Ironman World Championship, winners will also receive private athlete registration in Kona and four VIP packages, including race-day passes and invitations to race-week functions. Funding for the eBay auction does not have to be generated through one source, as fundraising efforts are acceptable. According to World Triathlon Corporation's President and CEO, Ben Fertic, all funds are tax-deductible and all proceeds go to The Ironman Foundation, which will in turn make donations to the organizations. Ironman covers all administrative costs to ensure all monies raised will directly benefit the selected charities.       To place a bid in this year's auction beginning on April 19, 2009, visit www.ironman.com .  All athlete inquiries can be directed to kona@ironman.com.

World Triathlon Corporation Announces Finish Line Policy

New Finish line policy to take effect at Ironman 70.3 California

Published Wednesday, March 11, 2009

World Triathlon Corporation will implement a new finish line policy for all domestic Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events. Beginning with Ironman 70.3 California (April 4, 2009), friends and/or family members will no longer be permitted to cross the finish line or enter the finish chute with participating athletes.

"Safety is paramount at all Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events. Allowing non-participants to cross the finish line compromises event security, serves as a distraction to other finishers and disrupts our secure finish line operations. Family and friends are encouraged to reunite with their athlete in the photo/post-race area just beyond the finish line," said Steve Meckfessel, Ironman's Chief Operating Officer.

In response to ongoing athlete feedback, Ironman has chosen to adopt this policy to ensure the safety of all participants, volunteers and fans. As with other sporting events, Ironman strives to provide a competitive and memorable event, one that allows all parties to enjoy the entire Ironman Experience.

This policy will allow each competitor adequate time to celebrate their accomplishment without interfering with other finishers. Athletes who choose not to respect the new policy will receive an automatic disqualification (DQ).

Press Release

SAN FRANCISCO -- The ING Bay to Breakers and San Francisco police and City officials have announced several new policies that will be enforced to improve the safety and enjoyment of the race for runners, spectators and neighbors during this year's 98th running of the ING Bay to Breakers on Sunday, May 17.

"We have listened closely to concerns from race participants, residents along the race course, and civic leaders. In response to safety, logistical and trash issues, we are instituting new policies in cooperation with the San Francisco Police Department and City officials," said Angela Fang, general manager of the race.

"The ING Bay to Breakers is about promoting community, physical fitness, and giving athletes and fitness enthusiasts the chance to compete in and enjoy one of the most exhilarating and scenic footraces in the world. We're still focused on the fun, vitality and unique culture of the race - we're just removing the alcohol and the hazards. We feel that these changes will enhance the race experience for all involved," Fang added.

The following changes have been made to the 98th ING Bay to Breakers, as well as future races:

  • Zero tolerance policy on alcohol. Anyone openly drinking alcohol or displaying public drunkenness will be subject to fines and prosecution.

  • All wheeled objects and floats are prohibited. Inappropriate equipment on the streets is dangerous and can prevent runners and walkers from completing the race in a timely manner.

  • Leave no footprint. Additional dumpsters will be placed along the course for trash.

"We are all working together to enforce these new zero tolerance policies," said Jim Lynch, assistant chief of the San Francisco Police Department. "We want to ensure that the 2009 ING Bay to Breakers is a safe and enjoyable event for everyone - race participants, families, residents and spectators included."

"The North Panhandle Neighborhood Association is supportive of the ING Bay to Breakers race instituting a zero tolerance policy for alcohol possession and public drinking. We want to see the race get back to its roots and focus on the sport of running, the celebration of San Francisco's diversity and the spirit of community. In recent years, the level of alcohol consumption has overpowered the event and made the race displeasing for the neighborhoods through which it runs," said Kevin Rafter, president of the association.

Fang called the ING Bay to Breakers race "a celebration of the unique spirit of San Francisco. Thousands of costumed participants, families and neighborhood residents from diverse communities come to cheer on professional and recreational runners and walkers," she said. "In keeping with both the integrity of the athletic competition and the fun, welcoming spirit of the race, we ask that participants and spectators respect the race route and the communities along the race course. This means leaving alcohol and wheeled floats at home, and putting trash and recyclables in their proper place."

In further support of the community, ING Bay to Breakers pays the City of San Francisco several hundred thousand dollars in fees, generates millions of dollars in travel and tourism and creates hundreds of event-related jobs for local community youth groups and schools. The race also makes significant contributions to a number of local charities.

The race draws approximately 65,000 participants and 100,000 spectators to San Francisco. The ING Bay to Breakers 12K was recently named by ESPN as one of the "101 things all sports fans must experience before they die," and already more than 6,000 registrants have signed up for the May 17 race. Fang assures that by adopting these new measures, "we are ensuring that runners, walkers and spectators enjoy a safe, fun event."

About ING Bay to Breakers 12K

Now in its 98th year, the ING Bay to Breakers 12K, a Running USA Founding Member, is one of the world's largest and oldest footraces, held annually in San Francisco, California. The name reflects the course which takes tens of thousands of participants from the northeast end of downtown San Francisco, near The Embarcadero (the "bay" side of the city), to the west end of the city and the "breakers" of Ocean Beach. The 7.46 mile (12 kilometer) race features world-class athletes in addition to costumed runners and "fun-loving" folks out for a great day of running and walking through San Francisco. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. For more information on Salmonella, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website or call 800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636).

Kids And Adults Worldwide To  Virtually Run And Walk With Man Through Alaska

A 44-year-old  husband, father of four and ultra-endurance athlete pushing a  jogging stroller of gear will virtually trek with thousands of children  and adults  worldwide over a 500-mile course through the rugged terrain of Alaska  between April 20 and May 12, 2009. Paul  Staso accomplished a 3,260-mile solo run across the United States in  2006 and a 620-mile solo run across Montana in 2008  ─  virtually trekking with teams of children using his unique approach to  promoting youth health and fitness. Now he's heading as far north as  the Arctic Circle and for the first time will virtually bring  adults along on his journey.

"The Alaska journey, called P.A.C.E. Trek 2009, is my way of trying  to make an impact in the childhood obesity issue and the continuing  decline of youth health and fitness," Staso says. "The  journey through Alaska will require me to average 30 miles per day  as I encounter some rugged and breathtaking terrain.  I'll be virtually traveling with teams of children and adults from around the world as  they access my web sites, pacetrek.com and stepthere.com, and learn about the  locations we're trekking through via my writings, pictures and media  files."

In May 2008 Staso accomplished the inaugural P.A.C.E. Trek by  virtually bringing  children with him across the state of Montana. Through rain, wind, heat and  snow Staso persevered across Montana, averaging 31 miles per day for  20 days during the east-to-west run. There were 108 teams of children (8,000+ runners and  walkers) globally following along with him and cumulatively those teams logged  over 42,000 miles during the trek. P.A.C.E. is an acronym for  Promoting Active Children Everywhere and that is what Staso  aims to achieve through his endeavors.

"Since I completed my 108 days of running coast-to-coast across  America, I've had opportunities to speak to many audiences about the  purpose of P.A.C.E. and what I believe needs to be done to turn the tide on  the growing epidemic of childhood obesity," Staso says. "Kids  need to see that if you take care of your body it can take you on  some wonderful adventures    ─  far more satisfying than staring at a television or computer for  hours on end. By the reactions I receive from children,  I know that my message and endurance journeys intrigue many."

Staso, a former 5th grade teacher, has developed an extensive web  site at www.pacetrek.com so teachers and students from  kindergarten through 12th grade can be involved in the trek. There  is no cost to register a P.A.C.E. Trek team and teachers can  sign up a team at pacetrek.com. For the 2009 endeavor Staso decided  that it was time for adults to get involved in the virtual journeys.  Therefore, adults can register teams for free via stepthere.com. Staso, who  organizes and funds much of the endurance journeys himself, intends to do  the treks annually in different locations  ─ as long as  his body holds up.

"We've set it up so that teachers will have everything needed at  the pacetrek.com web site and it would not take any more than 10  minutes per day for 17 school days. That's a commitment of less than  3 hours total," Staso says. "Last year we had teams reaching  from Germany to Georgia; Malaysia to Maine; Australia to Alaska;  Italy to Iowa... and so many places in between. I'm very excited to  also offer an opportunity to parents and non-parents to get involved  through stepthere.com."

Once again Staso will push a jogging stroller to carry essential  equipment, including: food, water, GPS, running gear, and more  ─ even a solar panel for charging electronic gadgets. Lodging  will be arranged before the journey begins.

Staso grew up in Alaska, attending such schools as Eagle River  Elementary; Gruening Middle School; Chugiak High School; and,  Juneau-Douglas High School - from which he graduated in 1983. Montana has been  Staso's home for the past 25 years. He is committed to doing what he  can to inspire, educate and motivate children and adults toward greater health and fitness. Staso also wants  people to set personal goals and reach for their dreams. As  he says, "Your dreams are beyond the horizon, and you have to  persevere to the horizon in order to realize those dreams."

When  not on the road, Staso develops virtual trek  curriculums which many schools have either adopted or imitated,  including a Run/Walk Across America trek (seeusrun.com)  and a fitness journey along historic Route 66 (kids66.com).  He also develops corporate web sites and provides Internet marketing  services through OnTrack Designs.

Staso is asking all who hear about his latest endeavor, P.A.C.E.  Trek 2009 (and the adult challenge called S.T.E.P. There), to share the  upcoming 2009 Alaska trek with as many people as possible. "The Alaska adventure will be a  fun, educational trek for all involved,  regardless of age or where they're located," Staso says. "Since it's  a free and unique opportunity I particularly hope that school teachers and  coaches will sign up student teams and support the aim of getting kids up,  moving and learning."

You can learn more about P.A.C.E. Trek 2009 at pacetrek.com,  and the adult challenge at stepthere.com. You can also  experience Staso's 2006 solo run across America online at pacerun.com,  and his 2008 solo run across Montana at pacetrek.com/montana.

Press Release

Ft. Lauderdale, FL -- 4-Time Olympic medalist Brendan Hansen and 3-Time Olympic Gold medalist and Olympic commentator Rowdy Gaines have joined forces with the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) and PMG Aquatics for the 2009 Ft. Lauderdale Rough Water Swim on Saturday, January 3, 2009.

The open water swimming competition will help raise funds and awareness to promote water safety. Brendan and Rowdy will be present to serve as hosts of the event and to join in the festivities.

Started in 1969 by Buck Dawson, founding executive director of the ISHOF, the Rough Water Swim was first called the Galt Ocean Mile Swim. The one-mile race took place on the newly-developed condo strip of the Fort Lauderdale beach known as Galt Ocean Mile.

It was known for many years as the largest swim race in the U.S. with the largest spectator audience, over 50,000 people, who theoretically would be looking out of their condo/apartment windows. When started, no lifeguards or safety crew existed -- in fact, swimmers were asked to "BYOL" or " bring your own lifeguard" to walk the beach as they swam.

After a few years, the Fort Lauderdale Beach Patrol patrolled the course with their beach Jeeps, and in the early 1980's suggested that the swim move three miles south to the part of Fort Lauderdale Beach which maintained lifeguard stations. Eventually, it became known as the International Swimming Hall of Fame Ocean Mile Swim. It has been held here ever since and is now in its 39th year.

PMG Aquatics , a division of Premier Management Group, has partnered with the International Swimming Hall of Fame to increase the visibility of the race and help raise awareness for drowning prevention.

"We are very excited to be a part of this race, with its incredible history, and to partner with the International Swimming Hall of Fame in promoting a great open water event while simultaneously promoting a worthy cause in drowning prevention" said Bobby Brewer, Vice President of PMG Aquatics.

Originally, the race was set up as an event for the College Coaches Swim Forum -- which has been meeting at the old Casino Pool and now the Hall of Fame Pool since 1935 -- although everyone was invited to participate. Bruce Wigo, CEO of International Swimming Hall of Fame stated, "This has always been such a great event. To now have two leading entities in the swimming community, PMG and the Hall of Fame working together, should hold great things for the future for the competition and the cause to prevent drowning."

The Ft. Lauderdale Roughwater Swim will feature a one mile swim and a 5K challenge for both masters and youth swimmers, and ¼ and ½ mile swims for the younger kids. The Ft. Lauderdale Rough water Swim is a perfect excuse to escape to beautiful Ft. Lauderdale, and enjoy the warm weather and beaches of sunny south Florida.

Swimmers of all ages are encouraged to come out and support this great cause. Travel packages are available. For more information, please visit www.lauderdaleswim.com . You can register for the race here.
