Kids And Adults Worldwide To  Virtually Run And Walk With Man Through Alaska

A 44-year-old  husband, father of four and ultra-endurance athlete pushing a  jogging stroller of gear will virtually trek with thousands of children  and adults  worldwide over a 500-mile course through the rugged terrain of Alaska  between April 20 and May 12, 2009. Paul  Staso accomplished a 3,260-mile solo run across the United States in  2006 and a 620-mile solo run across Montana in 2008  ─  virtually trekking with teams of children using his unique approach to  promoting youth health and fitness. Now he's heading as far north as  the Arctic Circle and for the first time will virtually bring  adults along on his journey.

"The Alaska journey, called P.A.C.E. Trek 2009, is my way of trying  to make an impact in the childhood obesity issue and the continuing  decline of youth health and fitness," Staso says. "The  journey through Alaska will require me to average 30 miles per day  as I encounter some rugged and breathtaking terrain.  I'll be virtually traveling with teams of children and adults from around the world as  they access my web sites, pacetrek.com and stepthere.com, and learn about the  locations we're trekking through via my writings, pictures and media  files."

In May 2008 Staso accomplished the inaugural P.A.C.E. Trek by  virtually bringing  children with him across the state of Montana. Through rain, wind, heat and  snow Staso persevered across Montana, averaging 31 miles per day for  20 days during the east-to-west run. There were 108 teams of children (8,000+ runners and  walkers) globally following along with him and cumulatively those teams logged  over 42,000 miles during the trek. P.A.C.E. is an acronym for  Promoting Active Children Everywhere and that is what Staso  aims to achieve through his endeavors.

"Since I completed my 108 days of running coast-to-coast across  America, I've had opportunities to speak to many audiences about the  purpose of P.A.C.E. and what I believe needs to be done to turn the tide on  the growing epidemic of childhood obesity," Staso says. "Kids  need to see that if you take care of your body it can take you on  some wonderful adventures    ─  far more satisfying than staring at a television or computer for  hours on end. By the reactions I receive from children,  I know that my message and endurance journeys intrigue many."

Staso, a former 5th grade teacher, has developed an extensive web  site at www.pacetrek.com so teachers and students from  kindergarten through 12th grade can be involved in the trek. There  is no cost to register a P.A.C.E. Trek team and teachers can  sign up a team at pacetrek.com. For the 2009 endeavor Staso decided  that it was time for adults to get involved in the virtual journeys.  Therefore, adults can register teams for free via stepthere.com. Staso, who  organizes and funds much of the endurance journeys himself, intends to do  the treks annually in different locations  ─ as long as  his body holds up.

"We've set it up so that teachers will have everything needed at  the pacetrek.com web site and it would not take any more than 10  minutes per day for 17 school days. That's a commitment of less than  3 hours total," Staso says. "Last year we had teams reaching  from Germany to Georgia; Malaysia to Maine; Australia to Alaska;  Italy to Iowa... and so many places in between. I'm very excited to  also offer an opportunity to parents and non-parents to get involved  through stepthere.com."

Once again Staso will push a jogging stroller to carry essential  equipment, including: food, water, GPS, running gear, and more  ─ even a solar panel for charging electronic gadgets. Lodging  will be arranged before the journey begins.

Staso grew up in Alaska, attending such schools as Eagle River  Elementary; Gruening Middle School; Chugiak High School; and,  Juneau-Douglas High School - from which he graduated in 1983. Montana has been  Staso's home for the past 25 years. He is committed to doing what he  can to inspire, educate and motivate children and adults toward greater health and fitness. Staso also wants  people to set personal goals and reach for their dreams. As  he says, "Your dreams are beyond the horizon, and you have to  persevere to the horizon in order to realize those dreams."

When  not on the road, Staso develops virtual trek  curriculums which many schools have either adopted or imitated,  including a Run/Walk Across America trek (seeusrun.com)  and a fitness journey along historic Route 66 (kids66.com).  He also develops corporate web sites and provides Internet marketing  services through OnTrack Designs.

Staso is asking all who hear about his latest endeavor, P.A.C.E.  Trek 2009 (and the adult challenge called S.T.E.P. There), to share the  upcoming 2009 Alaska trek with as many people as possible. "The Alaska adventure will be a  fun, educational trek for all involved,  regardless of age or where they're located," Staso says. "Since it's  a free and unique opportunity I particularly hope that school teachers and  coaches will sign up student teams and support the aim of getting kids up,  moving and learning."

You can learn more about P.A.C.E. Trek 2009 at pacetrek.com,  and the adult challenge at stepthere.com. You can also  experience Staso's 2006 solo run across America online at pacerun.com,  and his 2008 solo run across Montana at pacetrek.com/montana.

Press Release

Ft. Lauderdale, FL -- 4-Time Olympic medalist Brendan Hansen and 3-Time Olympic Gold medalist and Olympic commentator Rowdy Gaines have joined forces with the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) and PMG Aquatics for the 2009 Ft. Lauderdale Rough Water Swim on Saturday, January 3, 2009.

The open water swimming competition will help raise funds and awareness to promote water safety. Brendan and Rowdy will be present to serve as hosts of the event and to join in the festivities.

Started in 1969 by Buck Dawson, founding executive director of the ISHOF, the Rough Water Swim was first called the Galt Ocean Mile Swim. The one-mile race took place on the newly-developed condo strip of the Fort Lauderdale beach known as Galt Ocean Mile.

It was known for many years as the largest swim race in the U.S. with the largest spectator audience, over 50,000 people, who theoretically would be looking out of their condo/apartment windows. When started, no lifeguards or safety crew existed -- in fact, swimmers were asked to "BYOL" or " bring your own lifeguard" to walk the beach as they swam.

After a few years, the Fort Lauderdale Beach Patrol patrolled the course with their beach Jeeps, and in the early 1980's suggested that the swim move three miles south to the part of Fort Lauderdale Beach which maintained lifeguard stations. Eventually, it became known as the International Swimming Hall of Fame Ocean Mile Swim. It has been held here ever since and is now in its 39th year.

PMG Aquatics , a division of Premier Management Group, has partnered with the International Swimming Hall of Fame to increase the visibility of the race and help raise awareness for drowning prevention.

"We are very excited to be a part of this race, with its incredible history, and to partner with the International Swimming Hall of Fame in promoting a great open water event while simultaneously promoting a worthy cause in drowning prevention" said Bobby Brewer, Vice President of PMG Aquatics.

Originally, the race was set up as an event for the College Coaches Swim Forum -- which has been meeting at the old Casino Pool and now the Hall of Fame Pool since 1935 -- although everyone was invited to participate. Bruce Wigo, CEO of International Swimming Hall of Fame stated, "This has always been such a great event. To now have two leading entities in the swimming community, PMG and the Hall of Fame working together, should hold great things for the future for the competition and the cause to prevent drowning."

The Ft. Lauderdale Roughwater Swim will feature a one mile swim and a 5K challenge for both masters and youth swimmers, and ¼ and ½ mile swims for the younger kids. The Ft. Lauderdale Rough water Swim is a perfect excuse to escape to beautiful Ft. Lauderdale, and enjoy the warm weather and beaches of sunny south Florida.

Swimmers of all ages are encouraged to come out and support this great cause. Travel packages are available. For more information, please visit www.lauderdaleswim.com . You can register for the race here.

Typically a late February/early March race, the L.A. Marathon is moving to Memorial Day for 2009. This article in the L.A. Times takes a look at the pros and (mostly) cons of the change, particularly the fact that a late season race date means warmer weather and potentially slower times.

What do you think? Are you less likely to register for the L.A. Marathon now that the date is later than usual? Or are you excited to kick off summer with a run in SoCal's City of Angels?

Do you think registration numberswhich have been well over 20,000 in recent yearswill drop drastically? Or is this change in a time of change for the better?

*Philadelphia, PA* -- Anne Mahlum is a veteran marathoner who rose early most mornings to run on the dark streets of Philadelphia--often with homeless men cheering her on as she passed their shelter.

Instead of just waving and smiling, Mahlum thought she'd try and get them running with her. She contacted the shelter, got donations of running gear, and in July 2007 the Back On My Feet running club hit the streets.

The first day, Mahlum led nine shelter residents in a mile-long run. Today, Back on My Feet has teams at five Philadelphia shelters, with more than 90 members and more than 400 volunteers. The simple concept has developed into a comprehensive program that offers connections to job training, educational scholarships and housing assistance. The benefits of Back on My Feet are earned through the currency of attitude, commitment, teamwork, respect, dedication and leadership.

CNN Heroes and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter honored Mahlum at City Hall on Thursday, November 13, 2008, in anticipation of "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute" later this month that will spotlight ordinary citizens accomplishing extraordinary deeds. Mahlum was named one of ten CNN Heroes honorees last month, out of nearly 4,000 nominations from 75 countries and is the only honoree with an athletically-focused endeavor in the CNN Heroes Top 10.

"Running really is a metaphor for life," said Mahlum. "There is always another mile. You just have to take it one step at a time."

A Blue Ribbon Panel made up of distinguished humanitarians and leaders, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodall and Earvin "Magic" Johnson, selected Mahlum for her work to give people experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia a sense of community and accomplishment through physical fitness. She will be awarded $25,000 and is eligible for the $100,000 prize that will be bestowed upon the CNN Hero of the Year later this month.

The public will select the "CNN Hero of the Year" via voting at the CNN Heroes site at www.CNN.com/Heroes through Thursday, November 20 at 6 a.m. Eastern. At a November gala, CNN will honor the 10 heroes and reveal the CNN Hero of the Year. Hosted by Anderson Cooper from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute will air globally on CNN, CNN International and CNN en Español on Thanksgiving, November 27, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).

From the Running USA Wire:

Women's World Marathon Majors Series Champions' Race Will Come Down to Last Race of the Season

For the second consecutive year, the World Marathon Majors Series women's champions race will come down to the final race of the season at the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2, with three women still in contention for the $500,000 WMM champion's purse.

Reigning WMM Series champion Gete Wami of Ethiopia (65 points), Irina Mikitenko of Germany (65 pts) and Catherine Ndereba of Kenya (41 pts) are all in the hunt for the women's title. Both Wami and Ndereba will be fighting it out on the New York City streets while Mikitenko, who won the Berlin Marathon last month, will be watchingliterallyfrom the sidelines and hoping that things work out her way.

Martin Lel of Kenya (76 points) clinched the men's crown and $500,000 prize with victories at the 2007 and 2008 Flora London Marathon and last year's ING New York City Marathon. Only last year's WMM Series champion, Lel's compatriot Robert K. Cheruiyot (55 pts) had a chance of overtaking Lel, but a nagging leg injury forced him to sit out the fall season.

Lel and the women's champion will be honored at a special luncheon in New York City on Monday, November 3, the day after the ING New York City Marathon.

The 2007-08 women's WMM Series champion will be won by Wami, Ndereba or Mikitenko.

1) Wami holds her own destiny in her hands and can wrap up the championship for the second consecutive year, regardless of what Ndereba does, by finishing first or second in New York. Wami has already scored in the maximum four events so only by finishing first or second can she add to her point total. Wami finished second at New York last year in a tight duel with Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain, who is returning to defend her title.

2) Ndereba can only win the Series crown by placing first in the ING New York City Marathon, and then hoping that Wami does not finish in second place. If that happens, Ndereba would have 66 points and would beat Wami by a single point. A victory by Ndereba in NYC would be her first ING New York City Marathon title.

3) Mikitenko can only win if Wami does not finish in first or second place in the ING New York City Marathon and Ndereba also does not win the race. That would leave a tie between Mikitenko and Wami each with 65 points. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head and that is knotted at 1-1. Wami beat Mikitenko in Berlin 2007 and Mikitenko beat Wami in London 2008. The next and ultimate tiebreaker is a vote by the WMM race directors, whichif necessarywould be conducted immediately after the conclusion of the New York race.

Complete WMM Series leaderboards can be found at: WorldMarathonMajors.com .

•     Need recovery advice

“ok folks. I need some guidance on RECOVERY. did my first marathon on Sunday and now I'm wasted.”

•     How many miles should I be running (and a couple other questions, too)?

“Hello -- I've been running for several years now, and have averaged out to about 20-26 mpw. How many should I be running to consider myself a "true runner"?”

•     8 years old - 1st 5k

“My name is Alex and I ran my first 5k this past saturday. My final time was 23:42! I really want to keep running, but my mom is not a runner, she is a swimmer, and she is worried about me burning out. If I want to keep running 5ks what should my mom and I do?”

•     The British granny

“Another reason to keep in shape... though I'm sure some of our Texans on board would just as soon blast the perps away (I've always admired Texans).”

Press Release -- NA Sports, Oct. 10, 2008

Due to the tremendous growth of onsite registration, North America Sports will be implementing new onsite registration procedures. These new procedures will launch at Ford Ironman Florida and will be as follows:

    • Laptop computers will be used by our volunteers to take the prospective athlete's contact and credit card information on-site. The volunteer will enter in the prospective athlete's information directly into Active. They will then get the athlete's credit card information and charge them the race entry fee.

    • The prospective athlete will receive a copy of the form they filled out as a receipt, which will outline when and how to complete the registration process. They will also receive a reminder via email.

    • After receiving the confirmation email the athlete will have a spot reserved for them in the event. However, the participant will still need to go back to Active.com during a specified time frame to complete their online registration. Any athlete that does not follow this procedure will not be considered registered for the event.

    • The athlete will follow the same online procedure as before. They will access the Ford Ironman Florida event via a specific registration link, select their name from the athlete drop-down bar and enter in their unique password. However, the online entry will not have a payment associated with it as they have already paid the entry fee.

    • The athlete will receive a set amount of time (one to two weeks) to let them complete the registration.

This system will ensure fairness to all athletes wishing to sign up for NA Sports races. Under the previous system a number of certificates distributed at on-site registration were not redeemed and this created a situation requiring NA Sports to reopen on-line entries. People who attempted to enter on-line immediately after it opened and were closed out may not be aware of the additional spots available at a later date. This should no longer be the case going forward.

This new procedure allows the prospective athlete's information to be put directly into the Active.com database so that it is accurate and has no chance of getting misplaced. It may take a little longer in the beginning so we ask that you be patient with our volunteers and staff.

For more information, visit the NA Sports website .

My challenge to you all is that you 1) do not get offended at the statement below, 2) you challenge yourself to always be a runner (to me that is make it a lifestyle and not a hobby), and 3) if all you can do is speed walk that you do that because it is far better then a sedentary life.”

•     Deferring to 2009

“As some of you may recall, I had posted a response about not running pending a cardiologist appointment. That happened 2 Thursdays ago, and last Tuesday I went in for a cardiac catheterization, where the cardiologists inserts a catheter into your femoral artery, injects some dye and gets a better picture of your arteries and heart. Needless to say from the title of the post, news wasn't good.”

The Wall Street Journal has reported on the proverbial stick in the spokes of San Francisco's efforts to move forward with a thorough bike plan that seeks to boost ridership by 10 percent by 2010.

Phred Dvorak's article reveals that Rob Anderson's lawsuit has forced the city to perform an expensive and time-consuming environmental impact review of the bike plan, which totals 527 pages and offers comprehensive maps, traffic analyses, and bike lane and bike rack proposals.

Writes Dvorak:

Cars always will vastly outnumber bikes, (Anderson) reasons, so allotting more street space to cyclists could cause more traffic jams, more idling and more pollution. Mr. Anderson says the city has been blinded by political correctness. It's an "attempt by the anti-car fanatics to screw up our traffic on behalf of the bicycle fantasy," he wrote in his blog this month.

Huh? The bicycle fantasy? But Anderson isn't done ranting about cyclists:

"Regardless of the obvious dangers, some people will ride bikes in San Francisco for the same reason Islamic fanatics will engage in suicide bombings -- because they are politically motivated to do so," he wrote in a May 21 post.

Anderson, who Dvorak reports hasn't owned a car in 20 years, is even planning to run for a seat on the city's Board of Supervisors in November.

So as major cities such as New York , Chicago and Boston continue to make transportation by bike more feasible and safe, the usually progressive City by the Bay struggles under the bureaucracy required when one man demands that human-powered machines prove their environmental worth.
