In all of the live, group workshops that Positive Coaching Alliance presents nationwide for youth and high school sports leaders, coaches, parents and student-athletes, we discuss the concept of Filling Emotional Tanks.

Following is a script that coaches can draw from in order to convey the concept to players. This script addresses relatively young basketball players, but with just a few adjustments based on sport and your players’ ages, you can deliver the core message in your own voice.

Have you ever heard of the home court advantage? How often do you think a team wins on its home court? It turns out that teams win at home a lot more than when they are away. One reason for this is the emotional support of the crowd. It tends to lift our emotions and make us play better.

We want to be able to play our best all of the time. To play our best we have to keep our “Emotional Tanks” full. What is an Emotional Tank? Well, it is like a gas tank in a car. When it is full, we run well, but when it is empty, we can’t go very far.

Why is it important that we keep each other’s tanks full? If our Emotional Tank is empty, we become negative, and we give up more easily. If our tanks are full, however, we are optimistic and are able to handle difficult situations. As the coach, I will do my best to help fill your Emotional Tanks. To have a really great season, I need your help.

Think about when you miss a free throw. What would someone say to make you feel worse? (“You stink!”) See, that was easy. We call that draining the Emotional Tank. When you criticize or insult your teammates, you make them feel worse. That’s why we call it draining the Emotional Tank. I will try not to drain your Emotional Tank, but sometimes I will have to correct you to help you learn the game. I will try to do this in a way that keeps your Emotional Tank full.

What would someone say to make you feel better after you missed a shot? Maybe something like “Get the next one,” or “Shake it off!” We call that filling the Emotional Tank.

Here are some ways to fill the Emotional Tank:

• Tell your teammates when you see them do something well, or when you see them giving maximum effort, even if they don’t end up making the play.

• Tell your teammates when you see them improving. This will make them want to continue trying hard to improve even more.

• Listen to your teammates. If they have ideas they want to share, you can fill their tanks just by listening. Nobody wants to be ignored!

I promise to do all of these things. Also, I want you to do tank-filling activities with each other. Here is a great way that you can help me. It is called the Buddy System. Once in awhile at practice, I’ll ask you to pair up with a buddy. It might be a different buddy every time.

I want you to look for the things that your buddy is doing well. Remember, though, you have to be truthful, or else your praise won’t mean anything. Also, try to tell your buddies exactly what they did right. For example, if your buddy makes a nice pass into the low post, say “Way to keep that pass up high where only our center could grab it.”

Do you think it is important to say more positives than negatives? How many more positives should you say? I am going to try to shoot for five positives for every negative. I don’t want you to worry about the exact number of positives you say, just remember, be as positive as you can.

So, right now, pair up with someone else, to be your buddy for today’s practice. Later in the practice, I am going to have each one of you report back to the team on what your buddy said to you to fill your tank.

This season is going to be an especially great season if we support each other and keep our Emotional Tanks full. With full Emotional Tanks, we will be off to the races, and there is no limit to what we can accomplish.

Yes, there is a LOT of information that needs to be communicated and a lot of responses you need from players and parents throughout the season. But if you try to pack too much into one message, everyone who receives it will go into a brain freeze.

So chunk things up and make the question or request so easy and simple that the person receiving it can read it and respond quickly and easily.  Send “softballs” with “yes/no” answers once and a while that are so simple that anyone could respond, i.e., “Will you be at the game this Saturday?”  When responding to your messages becomes a habit, you’ve got it made.

Televised sports -- from a run-of-the-mill regular season game to this month's Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Finals and the FIFA World Cup -- provide great opportunities for youth athletes, coaches and parents to watch and learn together. So, how can coaches and parents help youth athletes get the most out of their viewing?

First, take the time to enjoy how sports bring you together. Don’t just sit like a couch potato; engage! These viewing appointments are bonding opportunities and a chance to help youth athletes become further inspired to pursue their dreams.

Through your own interest in whichever sport you are watching, you probably know some personal background of the competitors and dynamics of the teams. If not, a little research in those areas can yield great talking points to raise with your youth players. For example, “Didier Drogba, the player for Ivory Coast, helped unify his country by rallying them around the soccer team. What sort of character do you think he has needed to achieve that? Can you imagine a situation where you could use soccer to help others in need?”

Second, in discussing the games with youth athletes (whether as a parent watching TV with your own child, or as a coach taking practice time to talk about the televised games), focus not just on exciting plays, but also on moments when character is shaped or revealed. In Major League Baseball, for example, the recent near-perfect game by Armando Galaragga was a perfect chance for adults to talk to youth athletes about dealing with setbacks.

Finally, take great care to recognize and capitalize on "teachable moments." Teachable moments occur when a child tries to process an experience or an impression, and that is one of the best times for coaches and parents to turn even a negative incident, such as a brawl, into a springboard for discussing and teaching positive behavior.

Casting light on negative behavior and discussing it -- rather than ignoring it and hoping your youth athletes do the same -- can keep them from emulating the negative behavior. It is important not to let any poor sportsmanship go by without comment, because youth may take your silence as tacit approval.

Instead, you might ask questions: open-ended questions (questions that can’t be answered “Yes” or “No”) such as:

• What would you do if you were playing soccer and an opponent tackled you too roughly?

• What do you think of players who show up their opponents with exaggerated celebration?

• How would you talk to a teammate who was not Honoring the Game?

Sooner or later, you may need to firmly tell players the difference between right and wrong and let them know exactly what behavior you expect. But the most important aspect of using televised sports in your coaching or parenting is getting athletes to talk about their opinions of both positive and negative incidents they witness.

Players who grapple with the right and wrong of a situation (rather than simply nodding their heads when an adult speaks) are more likely to internalize the life lessons and values on display on the world’s grandest sports stages.

Of our SmartMessage Center Tips, this is probably the easiest and most effective in getting your team to respond.  Learn how to increase your response rate when trying to get info from the team!

Rather than having something like "Picture day this Saturday" in the subject line of your SmartMessage, change it “Let us know if you’ll be at picture day?”.  Then use the Multiple Choice or other SmartMessage formats to collect appropriate responses, rather than the Announcement format which leaves little room for response.

Or change a simple “announcement subject line from “Tournament info” into “Who can volunteer to help with the tournament?”

Here are a couple more handy ways to change that subject line to make it more “responsive”.

Turn “Team Dinner” into “What will you bring to the team dinner?”

Turn “League safety manual and rules” into “Please acknowledge receipt of league rules.”

Yes, it’s possible to turn EVERY message into the form of a question or request and you should do it once in the subject line and then again within the message body.

Happy SmartMessaging!

Maybe you use online registration, and maybe you don't. We wanted to share the benefits of having your teams, leagues or orgs use online registration, which saves you time and, in the long run, makes registration easier for your members. How does it save me time?

How does it save me time?

Every time one of your customers registers online, you save time by not having to manually enter a registration.

How is it convenient for my customers?

Your customers enjoy the convenience of registering in their own time and they don’t have to worry about losing paperwork with personal information.

Many of our partner’s (ActiveSports) clients have achieved extremely high online registration rates – some 90% or higher!!  Through this, we’ve compiled a series of 10 tips over the course of the next few months to share with you on ways which you can grow your online registration.

Tip #1 – Optimize Your Club’s Registration Options

-          Review the methods of registration you offer and substitute one of them with online registration.

-          List online registration first when offering multiple registration methods.

-          Highlight online registration on all handouts and signage as the preferred method of registering.

-          When you remove a registration method, add a message to your voicemail system announcing the newer and more convenient online registration option along with your website address.

We've recently released a new, online, customer support form for you to use when reporting customer service requests.  Learn why we created it and how it’s useful to you.

Feature-Driven Filters:

By letting us know what features you have as part of your site, it helps filter you into the right queue for customer service request.  In the past, simply emailing us with general information, and lack of site-type detail, resulted in slower response times.  In the new form, it allows you to list what site-type and features you have which allows your request to get filtered to the right response group.

Details Make the World Go Round:

The form also allows you to provide detailed information through drop down boxes and text boxes.  Providing more detailed information saves time, eliminates the back and forth between you and customer support, and allows you to get your answer much speedier.

Help Pop Ups:

We’ve included Help Pop Ups to help you provide the right information when selections are made.  This helps you provide the right information to our customer support group.

These are just few things that our forms help when contacting customer support.  For all future customer service requests, use our handy-dandy support form to guide you in your request, and guide us to the right answer for your request!

Check out the new support form here!

Here's your...SmartMessage Center Tip of the Month!

Do you feel unorganized and rushed when it comes to communicating with your team? Are you looking for a way to give advance notice of practice or calendar changes? Planning your communication schedule in advance can help save time and frustration.

Setting a regular message schedule also puts in place a weekly rhythm for the team and you’ll get better responses.   Be sure to add every key event and game to your team calendar or schedule to get yourself set up. Return to your calendar in 3-7 days and write yourself a note to “send a SmartMessage about X on X day”.

Or keep it simple and designate one or two days every week (Mondays and Wednesdays work well), and set a weekly reminder in your calendar to “send SmartMessages to the team.”
