Your First Triathlon - The Swim

If the swim leg of a triathlon makes you nervous, you're not alone. Most people thinking about trying triathlon have some issues with the swim.

Good news: the swim is the shortest leg of triathlon's swim-bike-run format. Don't let the swim stop you from trying your first triathlon.
If you can:

swim (15-20 minutes)

bike (60 minutes) and

walk (45 minutes), you can finish your first triathlon.

Some things to know:
1. Any swim stroke is OK. You can use freestyle, breaststroke, back crawl, side stroke or doggy paddle. If you have a panic moment, switch to something that makes you more comfortable.

2. You will get bumped. You may get kicked, scratched, or even run over. Knowing this ahead of time, will make any contact with other swimmers less of a shock. If you are new, or a slow swimmer, start in the back and to the outside. Take a wider path and you'll run into fewer people.

3. Don't forget to breathe. I tend to start off too fast. Everything starts to burn. Then I slow down, focus on breathing and try to swim well vs. fast.

08.27.08 Ride

After work I decided to do an hour long ride. This will be my last bike ride for about a week as I am leaving town, so I definitely pushed it hard. I rode just under 19 miles and was cruising along pretty quickly with a steep climb in the first 5 miles and then a nice flat ride as I did two laps around harbor island. My speed around harbor island for the two laps I was down there (about 5.5 miles) was probably at an average of close to 24 mph. I had a great tail wind heading East and used it to crank out some cruising speeds in the mid 26 mph range, without working super hard, so that felt pretty cool. Per my last brick workout post, I decided to take a Gu Energy gell (Vanilla Bean & Tri-Berry Flavors - both were delicious compared to Hammer Gel) 15 minutes before I started the ride and took another one about 40 minutes in (mile 12). I felt solid for the entirity of this ride and am definitely leaving town feeling great. I will be running while I am out of town and will do my best to keep the blog up. I hope that everyone is having a great week!
Update
8/25 My stepson, Nate, ran my distance workout with me. He was no more than 1o yards behind me at anyone time. This was the first time that I ran my distance workout with someone. It was unnerving hearing someone behind me. My time wasn't that great about 35 minutes for 3.1 miles.

8/27 - Nate ran with me again this morning. He dogged my heels the whole way. I ran my first 1 mile in 10 minutes even. I paid for it the remaining 2.1 miles in the workout. Total time was 34:30. My legs were tired all day. I probably ran the first mile too fast. Still it's nice to know that I can do a mile in 10 minutes.

Questions for 2012

Wow! Those were quite the Olympics. The past two nights I've just kind of stared at my blank TV wondering where all the volleyball highlights were. Thankfully, American's who thought they couldn't get enough of Misty May-Treanor will get to see her chasse on the new season of Dancing With the Stars!

Since Sunday's Closing Ceremonies, a few questions have been on my mind (other than what the point of interviewing Michael Phelps in London was. Did anyone get anything out of that other than to confirm that there is in fact a British equivalent to Ryan Seacrest? Lucky them...). Looking forward to London in 2012...

1) How can London top Beijing's Opening Ceremonies? Aside from raising King Arthur from the dead and having him pull Excalibur out of a stone before using it to light the torch, I'm not sure we're going to see an Opening Ceremony like that again. If London's bit during the Closing Ceremonies was any indication, they're going to rely on a theme of "China's show may have been exotic, incredibly choreographed and awesomely inventive, but we have celebrities you recognize." Although Beijing did have Jackie Chan singing on Sunday!

2) What will the featured events be for the Brits? After 2004, China made a concentrated effort to focus on gymnastics, diving, table tennis and badminton...and it paid off in a huge gold medal haul. But the UK cleaned up in track cycling, they're definitely going to want to do well in soccer, and I'm sure they'll be a factor in rowing. If you go to the London venue page, they are hyping the velodrome and its 6,000 seats. Great news for cycling fans.

3) Will there be any new events? BMX and open water swimming had pretty exciting debuts. I've heard rumblings that golf and squash are on the list. Anybody know of anything else? I imagine darts would be a great sport to debut in London.

4) Speaking of open water swimming, I wonder where it will be held. The Thames? Maybe 10K out from the city in the English Channel and just have the athletes swim in? OK, probably not.

5) Will the pool be as fast as Beijing's? A majority of swimming races at these past games saw world records set. A majority of those had more than one person or relay team surpass the existing w.r. Sure the LZR suits helped, but there was no doubt that Beijing built a fast pool. I imagine London will look to do something similar.

6) Can the U.S. track team get back on track? Granted, on paper they did pretty well. But to track aficionados (and NBC studio hosts) we could have done a little bit better. How will USA Track & Field respond? Maybe Jerry Colangelo is available...

7) And finally, going beyond 2012, does Russia deserve to host the 2014 Winter Games? They blatantly broke the Olympic truce on the night of the Opening Ceremonies by invading Georgia. Sochi, the site of the 2014 Olympics, lies just several miles from the Georgian border. Yet IOC president Jacques Rogge felt content to save his criticisms during these past Games for Usain Bolt's post-race "antics." Please. What will it take between Georgia and Russia to affect the 2014 Winter Olympics? Let's hope something is worked out and aren't raising eyebrows in a few years as we can watch Vancouver hand over the flag to Sochi.

But until the next Games, I'll be rooting hard for Chicago's 2016 bid and keeping my eye on that Taylor Phinney kid. I hear he's got potential.

The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing China are now over but the inspirational performances witnessed this year will continue to live on in Olympic history. Hopes and dreams were realized by some while others watched their dreams slip through their fingertips by one one-hundredth of a second. It's this very union of triumph and tragedy on the world stage that evokes powerful emotions in each of us.
Tomorrow: 6 miles pace

Comments: OK, I took an unexpected day off. For the third day in a row, I woke up in a funk, and I decided an extra day off would do me more good than a run. I'll do today's run tomorrow, and then, depending on how I feel, I may make up the off day later this week, or I may just let it go.

ActiveX - 08.27.08: Pride in the Name of Lusk

So, that was a little excessive. I can see my actual tail bone, all the skin has been rubbed off. I'm glad they didn't turn 30. I'll post a modified version below what we actually did today:

Warm up run down Lusk Blvd.
From the bottom to the stop light at the top of the hill http://.6 miles, do:

29 lunges
29 pushups
29 lunges
29 situps

Repeat until you get to the top.

2x29 pullups
400m of 29 shuffles left, 29 shuffles right, until you complete the distance.

Modified version

29 lunges
29 pushups
29 strides running
29 lunges
29 situps
29 strides running

Repeat until you get to the top

The Return of Tsonga

Looks like Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is back in action.

The 23-year-old from Le Mans, France advanced at the U.S. Open following a first-round win against Santiago Ventura, needing four sets for the win, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

Tsonga stunned the tennis world (and Rafael Nadal in the semis) at the Australian Open with an unstoppable aggressiveness and uncanny ability to make impossible shots.

While not quite recovered from recent knee surgery for an Olympic appearance, Tsonga makes his official return to tennis. He missed the majority of the clay and grass seasons due to the operation and wasn't able to return to the practice courts until the beginning of August.

Tsonga withdrew from Monte-Carlo in May due to the recurring knee injury, which stems from either his hard work on the courts or his hard play in the clubs.
