Today was my Mothers Day 5k run in San Francisco. The weather was unbelievable beautiful with no fog and plenty of sunshine, something I wish I would have known before packing a long sleeve tee to run in. The course wa beautiful. We started in the marina parking lot (where my kids stood holding hand made signs  and my husband video taping and cheering me on) and ran by the yacht club and down to the beach. Running along the beach towards the Golden Gate bridge was better than any of my training runs! There were alot of runners of all abilities (even a few walkers) I was a bit discouraged when I was lapped by a lady pushing a double stroller, but she was a pro I could tell. One thing that I found helpful in retrospect was that I had done a majority of my training runs pushing my daughter in a stroller, getting out there with out her made me feel so much lighter.

I finished my run in 39.50. I found when I rounded the corner headed towards the finish my legs found a reserve of strength and I picked up my pace (or maybe I was so excited to cross my FIRST EVER FINISH LINE)!!

I have enjoyed this experience and thank all of you for your help and support! I am sad that this has come to an end but am so grateful for what has come from it. I am carrying on my training to do a 10k in july in Santa Cruz. Who would have a runner! Thanks Active!!!

The final count down...

Posted by blondmom Apr 27, 2009

WOW! I can not believe how fast the time has gone by! I will be doing my race in just 2 weeks. I am getting excited and nervous. I am excited for the race to begin but nervous because I really want to do well. This has been so great. I have really taken a liking to running and the thought of doing more runs in the future is an exciting prospect. I have lost weight and gotten more toned. The best part is feeling great!! I love the way I feel after a good run and I can feel my legs getting antsy when I miss a work out...a good sign to me. {v}

I am really going to be pushing myself until friday before the race. Then I will rest up saturday and be ready to go on mothers day! It is a great Mothers day gift to myself. Being a mom you often( more like always) put yourself at the end of the line. By the time I get around to doing something for myself I no longer have the time or the energy. This experience has made me take the needed time to do something for myself to make me feel better. In the end it makes me a better mom because I feel refreshed and vented of the stress that gets piled on daily. It has taught me that life will still have out of control weeks where we won't know which way is up but trying to get that time in for fitness on a regular basis is so important! Not only for my health but often for my sanity. LOL!

Keep up the great work we are almost there!!

getting out of a rut

Posted by blondmom Apr 16, 2009

The past week or so I have been in a rut. I have been tired with sick kids and now spring break, which is almost at an end. I seem to only have the energy to run a mile. I start out tired and then I know I still have to go to work and don't want to use my entire reserve.!!  However I am planning to do a 5k run this weekend to see where I am. Hopefully this will give me a kick in the butt to get back on track. I don't want to show up for the mothers day 5k  unprepared or unable to run the entire thing. Next week my schedule go back to the normal routine so this should help as well.

I have to say that progress has been slow but steady. I am excited to become a better runner! I have already committed to doing the wharf to wharf which is a 10k  in Santa Cruz in July and I hope to be able to do a marathon next year. These are things I never thought that I would be doing. I am grateful for the opportunity I have had here at It has help me to get a physical goal and has helped me work at it  with support from professionals and people just like me, and daily check ins.!!  When I started I had never ran and now I know I can run at least 2.5 miles and hope to be doing three soon! It has also helped my Family. My husband, who is diabetic, now walks whenever I have to run, My son has made his own work out calendar like the one I follow and my daughter is going to run the kids race before mine. The other two girls like to excercise next to me and copy my stretching moves. I can't wait to encourage them as they grow to be active. This has been and entire lifestyle change for all of us. Thanks Active team and members for helping me along this journey! I can't wait for race day!!!!

Running with Hailey

Posted by blondmom Mar 31, 2009

Sunday was a beautiful sunny day, a great day for a run outside. My daughter, Hailey has decided to sign up for the kids race (1/2 mile) before my race on Mothers day. So she went out running with me for the first part of my run. She ran a mile and kept a great pace. Good job Hailey! After the 1st mile we  went home and I finished my run on the treadmill. When we came home my son expressed his interest as well and will run with us next weekend.

Yesterday I wanted to take advantage of the nice weather and packed mary ellen up and off we went to a run a beautiful trail. An added perk that I didn't know about was that the trail had mile markers so I was able to track how far I was running.  I hope that you are all getting to take advantage of the weather a run outside. I should really say jog because I can't call my pace a run, lol.

Keep up the great work Ladies!

Today I hit the gym with two of my girls. They played while I hit the cardio and weights. I increased the amount of weight I am lifting, not too much though I definitely do not want to "bulk up" and look like increda mom.( that would be my super hero name) After a great work out we headed over to Jamba Juice and enjoyed our nirvana strawberry drinks, Thanks to Active and the Jamba gift card! I included a pic of them with their Jamba Juice.

Learning from others....

Posted by blondmom Mar 23, 2009

Last night I did 45 minutes on the treadmill by following what Tamara had posted in her blog, Running 6 minutes then walking 2 . The two minute breaks helped me to catch my breath and bring my body temp down a bit. Thank you Tamara for the info!   I think I will continue this pattern and work on moving my running minutes up and the eventually dropping the walking minutes. I feel better and less like I will be left behind. I just needed something to help me break through and this was very helpful!

reaching for 40

Posted by blondmom Mar 19, 2009

OK I feel a little behind. Is anyone else running for the full 40 min? I am still inching past 30.The vacation and sick kids has slowed me down a bit. I am trying to get back on track with my running times. The weather has been nice and I am hoping to take advantage of it today and get a run in outside.  I did move my treadmill in front of a window that I throw open so I can enjoy the sunshine when I can' t be in it.

Everyone in the get active challange is doing great!! I love reading about the triumphs they have and the commitment they have is inspiring, although I hope I don't have to do an ice bath anytime soon! Thanks for all the supportive comments through out. I can't wait to read what everyone posts in their next blog. Good luck to all of you!

The real lesson....

Posted by blondmom Mar 17, 2009

Today as I am running on low sleep with a sick little one in my arms, I am learning the true lesson of this experience. Beyond reaching the goal of running a 5k is the goal of changing my lifestyle. It is learning how to balance excercise with the daily demands of life, which sometimes can feel overwhelming. It is learning that fitting in a work out into a busy day is possible and that excuses for why you can't work out just waste time. It might not always be the rigorous work out you had planned for but getting up and doing something is better than sitting down in defeat. I am grateful for this experience and how it has made me look for this balance in my own life. A short blog today so I can fit in my work out before I run out of time.

Back on Track

Posted by blondmom Mar 10, 2009

Ok, so when I left for Disneyland I had all intention of following my work out regiment. I even signed the waiver and had my key activated for the gym. However I was wiped out. We got into the park before it opened ( a perk from our hotel). Can you imagine being in Disneyland at 7am? We walked all over the park. Some of the line areas felt like a small track. Although there were not really any lines you still had to walk through the ropes, much like a mouse in a maze. We didn't want to teach our kids to cut under the ropes so the extra steps were taken. We also had the" My legs are tired"and" Mommy up" syndrome. I felt like I was building muscles while carrying them around. We got back to the room around 1:00pm to go swimming then showered and back to the park till 9:30pm.This left little time to go out and go to the gym.

However today the dirty laundry is sorted, kids are off to school and I am back on the treadmill. Hopefully this won't throw me off track too much. I am looking forward to getting back into my excercise routine.

A day of rest

Posted by blondmom Mar 4, 2009

This week I took an extra day off because I felt so ragged! After that I hit the gym and I have to say - what a difference a day of rest made! I was able to do more and I wasn't completly drained. Sometimes all your body needs is a little rest.:D

Tomorrow we are heading off to disneyland! I will get my run in before the long ride. Our hotel also has a gym so I will be able to get my workouts in while I am there, not to mention all the extra walking and weights (weights being carried children who climb out of strollers or don't want to stand in line). I am going to be signing up for a 5k in my area that benifits the Matt Garcia Youth Center that is in honor of a friend that died. It is for a great cause and I figured it would be a good practice run to see what I can do and what I need to work on. It is in April so I still have some time to work up to 3 miles.  Getting a little closer each week.

Hope all of you have a great and active weekend!!

I was able to get a good run in on Friday in the beautiful sunshine! The block of my kids school is 2 1/2 miles. I ran the longs sides and walked the short the first time around. The second time around I would run from the tree to the bridge at a faster rate then walk then pick another marker and run to that at a faster speed. It felt really good. I heard that this might help increase my stamina. Today the clouds have rolled in again so I am getting on my treadmill for my run. The sunshine was nice while it lasted!

Hope everyone was able to take advantage of the nice weather!     A new video is up and this time it is upright {o}

a break through.....

Posted by blondmom Feb 24, 2009

Finally I had a break through today and hit 30 min / 2 miles. I kinda feel like I got hit by a bus but I was excited to push myself to do it. The next steps are reaching that goal running outside and reaching the 35 min standard that has been set in my training routine. But all of that I will worry about tomorrow. Today I will bask in the mini glory of 30 min and enjoy my luna bar and gatorade in the sun.

This weekend I was able to run outside before the storm blew in. It felt good. I had a harder time regulating my breathing outside than inside on the treadmill. I also got a cramp in the arch of my foot. Any suggestions on how to stretch that out? Today I am headed to the gym for my work out. I am a little discouraged that we are up to 35 and I am having a hard time with 30. I don't want to get off track and left behind in the training. I will keep on keepin on until I reach it. Also, someday's I notice that after I run I am wiped out. Any suggestions for food or anything that might help me bounce back? (except a nap because that is not gonna happen =0) )

Where I am....

Posted by blondmom Feb 19, 2009

Where am I in my progress? Well, I went from never running to being able to run 25 minutes. I feel good about that! However for some reason the jump from 25 to 30 has been hard. My body is still getting use to it. I have really tried to follow exactly what our training calendar has laid out for us. There have been a few improv workouts along the way. I got some great new running shoes which I am hoping will help me when I am running outside. Some of the obstacles I have faced along the way Have been 1. Just getting motivated to do it. There have been some days where I haven't been able to run during the day and I work at night. I knew when I got home I would need to run,Sometimes this would be 10:00 pm. But when I got on the treadmill and started going I felt good. Although one night I did fall asleep in my running clothes (shoes too) on the couch after running.  2. Overcoming the mental obstacles I seemed to put up in my own way. I would be running and as I neared the end of my time I would hear my inside voice saying "I am tired", "I can't go any further" or " It won't matter if you stop, at least you ran this much". But I have become an skilled at motivating myself past the lazy lady in my head. 3. Cramping. OUCHHHHH! I was getting stomach and side cramps as well as charlie horses in my calves. However I have received some great tips(that I appreciate) and I look forward to overcoming this.

I am enjoying this entire experience. Seeing myself accomplish new things, getting my family involved in this lifestyle change, Reading others blogs and understanding what they are going through, and anticipating the completing of a goal that is for myself!

I hope that you are also enjoying the journey!

another one bites the dust.....

Posted by blondmom Feb 18, 2009

Hurray for winter weather and the joy it brings, joys such as sick kids who need you every moment. It started with one child then spread through the troops like a wild fire. It was a challange to get in my work outs this week. I actually didn't get to do  all that was planned. I missed some of my cross training. However while the movie was playing  I jumped on the treadmill and did some squats, lunges and ab work. I felt good that I was able to sneak it in even if it wasn't my full work out it was better than staying on the couch and giving up. And as far as feeling uncomfortable, anyone else been woken up at 3 am with charlie horses in their calves? As exciting as it was to be awoken from the dead of sleep, jump out of bed and stretch I would love some advice on avoiding these in the future. (Although the startled look on my husbands face was priceless)

Hope that the cold and flu season doesn't reach you!
