ARE YOU WEIRD????

So I am preparing for a long run in the morning and I started thinking about what I want to do to mentally and physically get ready or it. I usually do my carb load the night before chased down with Gatorade. And I do all of the things that I am supposed to do but I started thinking...what quirky things does anyone else do? For example, I always lay out what I am going to wear. I get my iPod charged and ready to go. I make sure my contact lenses are going to go into the right eye at whatever ghastly hour.  Finally, I shave my legs (you got it easy boys!!). I crawl into bed and tell myself good thoughts about my run. I fall asleep thinking about how awesome I am going to run. When I wake up in the morning I eat my pancakes with peanut butter chased down with Gatorade. I get dressed and I walk out to my driveway. Now, my driveway is not large by any stretch of the imagination but it serves as a visual focal point that allows me to realize that I am starting here and guess what...I am finishing here and whatever happens in the middle well, that is between me and the road.

But back to the quirky things. I have spoken to many a runner and they all have a different way of "getting their groove on" It's kind of funny in a way. Here we are all doing the SAME thing yet totally different and unique. I have spoken to runners who sleep in their clothes they are going to run in. Some have to eat at exactly the same time or else their stomachs will explode (or whatever they think will happen). For me, I know that I have a set of "magic socks." I only pull them out in extreme and dire situations. These socks will almost always guarantee me a successful run so I do not abuse them and use them only when I got a case of the "kerplutters" (um...that is when my running performance is not up to par...kinda like a golfer gets the "shanks".).

And what about what about after the run? Any ritualistic things going on there?  All I can say is...HOT FUDGE SUNDAE!!!

CARRY ON.....

Jen...  all I can say for me the novice runner; is that I make sure that I have my running shoes on the right feet, that my laces are tied, and that I put one foot in front of the other and pray that I make it back home safely!   Oh... I forgot, I need to be wearing those socks that "wicker' away the moisture and not cotton ones.  Isn't that right Coach Kevin!?

Otherwise, I don't have any rituals that I do.  But I'm sure some others on Team McGraw do!

Let's see who speaks up first!

Fun Blog Jen!

Good Morning Jen,

Hope you (as well as Glen and Jack) enjoyed that Hot Fudge Sunday - I may have to borrow that portion of your ritual (you know for the kids, of course!).

All the best,

Hey Jen...

Oh, I don't know about "rituals," in that sense of "a religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order" so much...(from the built-in dictionary on my MacBook Pro)...but certainly Deano and I have to have our ducks in a row as we tackle our long runs in some new city along our touring route.

In our case...things work backwards.  We look ahead, figure out what day and/or where that long run can happen...("Downtown Detroit, no...mid-day in Albuquerque, NM, no...arriving the night before so we can get up early in Great Falls, MT...BINGO!")  So we plan backwards...

Thursday: long run day. Dig out hidden Powerbars.  GPS charged.  Socks ready.  Good to go!

Wednesday: easy day to prepare for above. Make sure Garmin GPS watch is charged.

Tuesday: Found laundry option.  Set aside good socks for Thursday. Hide Powerbars in backpack.

Monday: Try to do laundry; no facilities.  Walk to Wal-mart down street for Powerbars.

Sunday:  Check laundry and make sure good fresh running socks are available...nope.

it ain't real sexy...but it gets it done on the road!  Hey...it got us through the Soldier Field 10-Miler together, didn't it, Jen?

Ya gotta believe...McMahon

Weird?  You have no idea.

As far as running rituals?  Yes.  I am a picky about the timing of my meals before long runs and races.   My Ipod is loaded with new podcasts (no Ipod in races) and water bottles are prepared with my favorite drink the night before.  Not just any pair of shorts or socks is worthy of a long run. Shoe must be tied just so with double knots.  And don't forget my coffee!

Post long run?  Anything over 2 hours and I soak in an ice bath.  Nothing better for recovery... no whining.   I usually have a fairly healthy meal after my run in order to get the good stuff back in.   My splurge is dinner later that night.  Pizza is a favorite but sometimes, especially after a race, it is a big hamburger and fries!

And i usually only shave my legs the night before a big race!  Nothing like the pre race shave to get you in racing mode!!  YGB
