Hungry in Hungary

Posted by jjadams Dec 14, 2007

As Tara mentioned, I recently paid a visit to Eastern Europe for two weeks. My company manufactures cell phones in this region and a quality problem was discovered with the model I'm working on. To test the true "global" capability of my Global Positioning System, I took pictures in each city I visited, including the layover stops on my flight (Zurich on the way to Hungary, Frankfort on the way home). Check out the map...

Once I landed in Budapest, I picked up my rental car and drove off into the countryside. My destination was Komárom, a small town on the Hungary-Slovakia border and home to both Nokia and Foxconn production factories.

I spent the whole week working in the Foxconn factory but was able to escape for the weekend to Vienna, Austria. The trip was only 150KM, check out the map below. The city was beautiful and I captured a few of the highlights here.

I returned to Hungary for another week of work and continued to sample new local eateries each night. Several of my hosts were actually Slovakian and enjoyed crossing the border (Danube River) at night to the more lively, Komarno. Here we are eating a traditional Slovakian dinner in a restaurant located inside the old fort. Items I was encouraged to sample included Tripe (cow stomach lining) and Knuckle (pig ankle). Good thing there was beer to wash it all down!

Wow, Justin - It does sound very interesting - and some of the architecture is really beautiful. I only wish you had put more pictures up here! The food sounds like it would help on my quest to lose weight!

Oh my God. I would have starved to death. Did you actually eat it?? - cow stomach and pig ankle?? I wouldnt have tried it, I would probably puke if I saw it. Sick.

Justin Jay - Seriously, you did not really eat pig ankles and cow stomach!! Ewwwww disgusting! What did they taste like? (Don't say like chicken - haha!) For a kid who would never even try any vegetables except corn until he was in college... that is unbelievable! Couldn't you politely say "no thank you"? Guess I'd starve to death over there if that's all they served! Is that really what you are eating in the picture at dinner, cuz it looks like some yummy chocolate creation!

Hey, can you put all those little side pictures on here? And tell us what they all are? It's so cool that your camera shows the cities where you were taking the pictures. Amazing! Did you actually leave the airports during layovers to take pictures? !

I see by the photos that this place looks a lot like DETROIT......snow, cold, a bunch of old churches, soul food (aka: pig knuckles, innards), women dressed up in 6 layers of clothing and cell phones that dont work.
When is the next flight???

I like BOBs comment.....watch out for POLES.....Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!
