Georgia has World Series on its Mind

Warner Robins (Ga.) American Little League advanced to the 2007 Little League Baseball World Series Thursday night behind the bat--and pitching arm--of Kendall Scott en route to a 10-9 win over Westside (Ala.) Little League in the Southeast Region Championship game in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The victory ensured that for the second straight year a team from Georgia would be represented at the Little League World Series. Last year Columbus Northern Little League won the world championship with a win over Kawaguchi Little League from Kawaguchi City, Japan in the Little League World Series final.

For awhile it looked like Warner Robins could book their tickets to Williamsport before the third inning had been completed. After jumping out to an early 7-1 lead behind two homeruns from Scott, Westside Little League rebounded with two four-run innings to reclaim the lead. Warner Robins centerfielder David Umphreyville scored the go-ahead run on a Westside throwing error in the top of the fifth, and Scott pitched the last three innings to seal the win.

No one may have been happier with the result than Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, who handled catching duties for the Warner Robins American Little League team some 50 years ago.

"I was honored to wear the Warner Robins jersey years ago, and these boys have made us proud with the way they have represented their community and our state," said Perdue.

At stake wasn't just Gulf Coast bragging rights--but a "gallon of North Georgia's finest, 100 percent locally mountain-grown headwaters" to be sent to Alabama Governor Bob Riley if Westside would have been able to pull off the upset.

Warner Robins American Little League enjoys a brief moment of celebration before traveling Monday to Williamsport, Pennsylvania to begin the state of Georgia's defense of the Little League World Series title.
