Don't Mess with Texas

Posted by LLWS_Active Aug 23, 2007

For more cool stuff on the Little League World Series check out Active's The Road to Williamsport special section.

Some call it momentum. Others call it luck. Lubbock Western (Texas) Little League manager Ed Thorne calls it "Texas mojo."

"We rarely go against the mojo," said Thorne. "We try to repeat things when things are going well and it's worked."

It certainly has. The team's 8-2 victory over Lake Oswego (Ore.) in the Little League World Series U.S. semifinal marked its 20th straight win since the all-star team was formed nearly two months ago. During their undefeated run, the West Texas squad has dominated every level of tournament play, with not a single team coming within three runs.

The formula is quite simple: give the ball to staff ace Garrett Williams and wait for a three-run home run. That's why Thorne brought in Williams, the hottest pitcher in Williamsport, with two runners on in the second inning to snuff out an early Lake Oswego rally.

"I knew we were going to get a smoke fire from Oregon," said Thorne. "With Garrett we have the best smoke."

At first it appeared the mojo might've abandoned Lubbock Western. Williams, forced to avoid the curveball for fear of a wild pitch, was punished when pitcher Calvin Hermanson hit a fastball down the left-field line to drive in two. For Williams, who struck out 17 in his last appearance, it was a bit of a wake-up call.

"I just had to focus a little more and put the ball in the strike zone," said Williams. "If I did that. I knew they couldn't hit it."

As for the three-run dinger that put Lubbock Western up for good, those duties belonged to Bryndan Arredondo and Taylor Bridges. No one was quite sure who was more excited--the 12 year-olds who knocked the ball over the fence or their manager/first base coach, Thorne, who excitedly ran down the line with them.

"The most miraculous thing I get to do is watch these kids launch from first base," said Thorne. "It's a great view. They're amazing."

With the victory, Lubbock Western clinched a matchup with the winner of the Arizona/Georgia game in the U.S. final on Saturday--putting them just two wins away from a Little League World Series championship title.

For now, the team from the Lone Star State will continue to step over the baseline, take infield practice in the same order and try to eat the same pizza and hot dogs they have all week. You don't mess with something as powerful as "Texas Mojo."

When I saw the team from Roswell, NM lose to Lubbock in the regional final, I saw a team that would be tough to beat, That has proven to be the case in the World Series, They will win the LLWS.

Georgia won it last year and I see a repeat again this year. Georgia will go back to back this year and as far as "don't mess with Texas" well see who's got the best team. Texas does not have the bats that Georgia has and thats a fact.

Aug 25, 2007 12:11 PM Reply Guest Shea in response to: Coach from Georgia

Ohhh, the bats are there, trust me......Where is Georgias pitching is the question?????It takes both attributes to win a ballgame!

well i guess i cant ask the texas team, muchless the state of texas to rally around their countries rep. in the llws when the texas coach bashes the georgia team like he did. its a sad day when something like this happens. so to the texas coach. DON'T MESS WITH GEORGIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! remember the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem............. GO GEORGIA!!!!!!!!

Aug 26, 2007 10:38 AM Reply Guest Guest in response to: Texas Mom

The crazy, screaming Texas mom is really annoying. I have no affiliation with any team in the tournament, yet I can hardly look at the TV any time I hear her screaming voice. I love enthusiasm, but throttle it back a little bit, little lady.

I sure hate to see our Lubbock boys lose. I wanted to see them go all the way. As for the coaches, both of you guys better tighten it up. I'm disappointed in you both for the comments made.

Nevertheless, Georgia has our support here in Texas. You boys hit'em hard, hit'em fast and play good, clean, solid ball and you will do fantastic.

It's a lot to shoulder but, you young gentleman are ambassadors for our country. Make us proud.

Aug 26, 2007 3:45 PM Reply Guest a big time georgia fan in response to: LubbockDad

lubbockdad i could not have said it any better. thanks for the support and go all LL teams.

Aug 26, 2007 3:48 PM Reply Guest AbileneTX in response to: LubbockDad

The comments made by the Lubbock coach are a disgrace to the great state of Texas and to Little League baseball. As a Texan I am sorry we lost but we were outplayed and outhustled by a better team from Georgia. I wish them well against Japan in the finals. Go USA!

Yes, we shut up that traveling team from Texas. We won fair and square. When you do it the right way, somehow you prevail. Congratulations Georgia. Well done.

You got it coach! Great ball game. I am glad Georgia did not run away with the game like they did with their previous games. Congratulations Georgia, serving the big W's in style. What an amazing group of kiddos!
As far as the comment from the Texas coach, prime example of thinking aloud. Should have kept his notes in his mouth. I tell you though, he did not mean it. He was as nervous as the kids and went into defensive commentating.
Great wins Georgia!!!!!!!!!!
By the by, Coaching lost Lubbock Texas those games. The kids on that team did wonderful this year!!!!!!!
Congratulations Lubbock!!!!!!!!!

Aug 30, 2007 6:10 PM Reply Guest LLWS07 in response to: WeaKsaUce

#16 on Oregon is not as fine as #10 on Texas. Garrett Williams is HOT!!!!!! He's also an amazing pitcher and I wouldn't be suprised if he plays college and maybe goes pro. Texas came in third by rank but they're #1 by talent and Garrett Williams is the best little league pitcher in the world at the age of 12. The only reason Georgia won is because the second best pitcher on Texas didn't start and when he finally pitched, he broke his ankle. It was bad luck that Texas lost not because Georgia was more talented than them.

Aug 31, 2007 2:53 AM Reply Guest Tina

I was disappointed for the Lubbock Texas Team. We watched them in Waco when we were down there for our Senior League play off berth. They seem to have had the same problem we did. Coaches who lost the kids goal and focused on themselves.

Good job Texas! 3rd place is still awesome. oh and garret is really hot! I dont know you and probably wont ever meet you but your rrrreeeeeaaaaaaalllllyyyyyy hot!

so sorry but i know him so haha and he has a gf her name is mack and shes gorgeous so soryy.......

Sep 5, 2007 3:26 PM Reply Guest Miley in response to: cccccc

Ok so everyone is saying that Garrett has a GF but i dont think so. Yes he is hot and everyone thinks so, but no one even nows him unless they live in Texas and like talks to him like everyday. Some people say that his GF's name is Mackenzie or Mack or who ever, but I'll believe it when i see it so if anyone has any prof tell me.Every girl wishes that he was there boyfriend but lets come to reality.

Texas Rules!!
Great job boys.
