RE: Vegetable Gardens: Great for the World (and Your Wallet)

As a follow-up to this, I have two words for every rookie gardner: soaker hose.

We weaved one through all of our dying-of-thirst plants, and have watered our garden 2-3 times a week for about 45 minutes each with this soaker hose. The results are incredible.

Everything is growing nearly out-of-control. At last count, I have about 40 tomatoes on three plants, and they all look on course to ripen at the same time (what in the heck am I going to do with them all?)

In addition, we have bell peppers, jalepenos, strawberries, carrots, butter lettuce, onions and basil doing great. I just put in a watermelon and the plant itself is starting to consume one corner of our garden (though no melon yet).

Anytime I use something out of the garden, I grin through the meal. Just the other day we made fried rice using green onions from the garden. I swear it tasted way better.

Soaker hose, my friends. Soaker hose.

I organized a semester-long shoe drive at my college, collected more than 160 shoes, and Nike's drop-off points won't accept them (only 10 pairs per person per drop-off).

Basically, this program makes Nike look really good - its ecofriendly, sustainable, all that - but Nike's not really willing to put forth the effort to make it work.
