Germany Advances

Posted by Active Soccer Sep 26, 2007

Not only did Germany advance to the finals (as they were expected to do) in the FIFA Women's World Cup, but they played a clean game against Norway and broke a record doing it.

The Associated Press reports that Germany has gone 529 minutes without conceding a World Cup goal, dating back to the 2003 tournament. That broke China's record, which was 442 minutes in the 1999 and 2003 events.

Germany will go on to play the winner of Thursday's match between the U.S. and Brazil. The question is, will the U.S. advance and go on to play in the finals against Germany?

They have to get past Brazil first, whose star player, Marta, is one of the best playmaker's in the world.

U.S. Coach Ryan is making adjustments to prepare. Ryan is replacing goalkeeper Hope Solo with veteran Briana Scurry for Thursdays game with the hope that Scurry's "reaction type" saves will keep Brazil at bay.

If Scurry perfoms as well in the game as she has been in practice, and Abby Wambach can score more goals like this one against Sweden, the U.S. just might find themselves playing Germany in the finals on Sunday in Shanghai.
