Fastest Marathon, Fun Triathlon & Climbing

PAUL CHEUNG of LeagueOne (Active Sports) in Burnaby office completed his first marathon on Sunday in Vancouver International Marathon with the time of 4 hr 35. His legs feel like **** but he feels like a million bucks.

FAST MAN MARK LISTER (Documentation, Burnaby) also ran his first marathon at the Vancouver Marathon on Sunday. Conditions were ideal; partly cloudy with very little wind.

After starting a bit quickly, I settled into my race pace and work with a small pack. I hit the dreaded “Wall” full-on around 30km, but thanks to the energetic spectators, I pulled it together soon after, even managing to catch a few runners in the last few kilometres. I finished in 2:50:07 (19th overall, 3rd in my age category 25-29) and I’m very happy with my result. Mike Comment – “You better be happy with a FIRST MARATHON TIME OF 2:50 buddy, you make us all jealous”! THIS IS THE FASTEST ACTIVE TEAM MEMBER MARATHON TIME THIS YEAR, WONDER IF ANYONE WILL BEAT IT?

David Detar (ActiveOutdoors – Campgrounds) and his nephew (Dan Price) ran the half marathon in Pittsburgh on May 3. The marathon / half-marathon returned after a 5 year absence to Pittsburgh and set an attendance record with 10,500 participants. It was the first half marathon run by either of us. Having never completed this distance in a race, we both set a goal of 2 hours & 30 minutes. With the weather cooperating (temps were in the 50s with no wind), we were able to exceed our expectations. After running together for the first nine miles, I pulled ahead slightly at the end to finish in a time of 2:06:35. Dan was just a few minutes behind at 2:09:57. I’m anxious to compete at this distance again and now want to break the 2 hour barrier. Here is a picture of my nephew (on the left) and me after our run.

PS: Active’s own Mike Reilly was in Pittsburgh to announce the event!!!!

!David_2347.jpg! (david pic)

MICHAEL WILSON & MIKE REILLY did work the Pittsburgh Marathon and ½. It was a great day and the race after a 5 year hiatus came back in full force with over 10,000 runners.

GISELLE DOMDOM ran the Orange County, CA Half Marathon. It was the first year on the new course--beautiful and a lot of fun! I would recommend it and will probably be back again next year.

TOBY GUILLETTE (AMP) our resident Ultra Man is preparing for the Vermont 100 Endurance Run in July. Racing back-to-back this weekend was great training. Saturday did the Sun Strides Black Mountain 7K Summit run, finishing 5th overall and 1st in my age group with 28:31. Later that day, drove to OC Marathon expo where I ran into Active Alumni Marques Charbonnet.

Sunday: the new OC Marathon course, finishing top 70 overall and 5th in my age group with 3:29. Solid training weekend in the books

ARCH FUSTON reports the ActiveX Charity Challenge group in San Diego did their workout at the La Jolla cove on Saturday morning. After a beautiful 4 mile coastal run, the group completed a 4-stage ActiveX workout, much to the delight of German and Japanese tourists.

Our photos can be scene at: http://picasaweb.google.com/afuston/ActiveXCharityChallengeTraining2#

Active X’s RYAN DREW, REBECCA DIVITA & JIM GARFIELD were among the 1,000’s of athlete’s and other Active employees racing the Wildflower Triathlon weekend in the hinterlands of Paso Robles, CA. Chill’s (rain), Spills (Jim crashed) Thrill’s (great course) were had by all. Of course the camping experience would not be complete without the edition of Rebecca’s cappuccino machine which despite her best efforts sucked to much juice out of the Prius to be used!

NOLAN HANSEN, Account Specialist also participated in the festivities of the Wildflower Triathlon this past weekend. The race weekend consisted of over 7500 athletes and nearly 30,000 spectators in all. I raced in the Half Ironman Long Course Triathlon and finished in a time of 4:47.

ALEYNA PERSZYK-DORR Yesterday, we had a beautiful day for a hike in the San Gabriels. My father, my boyfriend and I completed a 9.2 mile hike on Mt. Baldy. We approached from the South from Manker Flats via the Baldy Bowl Trail. After the first mile on the paved San Antonio Falls Road, a single-track trail climbs steeply up the west wall of upper San Antonio Canyon to the Sierra Club Ski Hut, across the base of Baldy Bowl to the south ridge, then ascends the ridge directly to the summit. The hike was challenging and the scenery was stunning!

STEPHANIE SNAMAN reports on Sunday did the Spring Sprint Triathlon in San Diego which marks my one year anniversary of triathlons! HANNAH SANSONE was also out there racing and we had CARRIE JAMES, EMILY CHAN-NORRIS AND KAREN HARDY for support! I had a great race and was able to shave nearly 9 minutes off of my previous time. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store!

ACTIVE WARRIORS "HOT" LA JOLLA & CLASSIC BOTHELL 4/27/08

IT WAS A VERY HOT WEEKEND IN SO. CAL. WITH THE TEMP HITTING 95 DEGREES AT THE BEACH. THIS ALONG WITH THE HILLS MADE IT A TOUGH LA JOLLA ½ MARATHON. MUST BE WHY NO ONE SENT IN LA JOLLA PICS, NOT HAPPY WITH HOW THEY LOOKED.

AND NO ONE FROM ACTIVE WAS AN “IMPOSTER” LIKE THEY DISCOVERED THE WINNER WAS AFTER HE FINISHED.

BOTHELL SENDS IN A "CLASSIC" THIS WEEK.

Mike

CHRIS BONHERT said he ran slower in La Jolla than he wanted at 1:58 but on this day just finishing was a great accomplishment.

STEPHANY CAVATONI Dir. Business Solutions with her family the Cardenas’s - Juan, Stella and Lucas were out in full force standing and cheering the Active runners at mile 5 in the La Jolla ½. They had their “Cow Bells” clanging as the runners came by.

MICHELLE CREPEAU came out from NY to work in the SD office and run the La Jolla ½. She said “how about that heat and HILLS, this Cali girl forgot how big those hills were”. She ran a great time of 2:19:42 then took the ‘red eye” back to NY. It would have been a classic seeing Michelle get off the plane this morning!

CHRISTINE ALBERGA smiled all the way in 2:24 and ran down the finish with her daughter Kate in her flip flops!

ELAINE BERGERON ran the ½ and tells me she doesn’t remember her time but then she came out of her fog, she ran a great 2:02.

CAITLYN BARKER was spent when I saw her at the finish but sooooo happy it was over. She worked hard on the tough La Jolla ½ course for 2:40.

MICHAEL WILSON in SD was another one who sent a Lo Jolla ½ report in with no time. I pulled it out of him and he ran a 1:49:20. Breaking 2:00 on a day like yesterday is huge!

THIS IS A CLASSIC AS REPORTED BY STEPHEN BRANSTETTER!

Now for JOEL WERDELL of the Bothell office, made his not-so-professional debut in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA). Coming out of retirement for the fight was the legendary Ultimate Fighter Ken Shamrock. While Joel’s youthful energy and exuberance propelled him to an early lead in the first 4 seconds of the bout, the action of the fifth second proved devastating both mentally and physically to Joel’s pursuit of a career in MMA and his face (photo attached). Ken’s 5th second maneuver resembled the legendary “Pamchenko” made famous by the 1992 ice skating blockbuster “The Cutting Edge.” The maneuver promptly ended the bout and resulted in a shattered upper face (that’s a technical term) for Werdell. In a post facial surgery interview Joel vowed to return to the octagon immediately and boldly challenged the resurgent Chuck Liddell for what he has dubbed the “rubble in the bubble” (I don’t know what that is supposed to mean but he was heavily drugged at the time).

All of us at Active wish Joel the best in his recovery and his continued MMA success.

*Note: The above story is 99% fabrication. It is meant to mask the embarrassing fact that Joel ran into his own teammate while playing flag football resulting in said injury. It is also meant to promulgate and promote the legend of Joel Werdell – a man worthy of legendary status but lacking in publicly recorded and witnessed athletic accomplishments necessary to gain such a reputation.

JIM GARFIELD Dir. Business Development AMG ran a Personal Record which is impressive on a very HOT day in La Jolla. He ran 1:40 and was no worse for the wear at the finish.

LAUREN DACHILLE ran a great LJ ½ in a time of 2:16 and loved it.

BROOKE KIRKPATRICK Team Sports AE ran the ½ in 2:07.

HANNAH SANSONE AE Swimming along with some friends said she ran the miserable La Jolla ½ Marathon. Didn’t PR. Finished in 1:51. It was great to see so many Active people there.

LAUREN PISCO Implementation Analyst for LeagueOne also ran a half BUT it wasn’t La Jolla. She traveled to Nashville, TN for the County Music ½ Marathon. She has been rehabbing knee tendonitis the past few months and didn’t expect much. So she was very happy with a time of 1:52 and the Nashville course is very challenging with tons of spectators.

The Active Hiking Group hit up Mt Woodsen this weekend in the ridiculous heat. ANDREA RISHMAWI, ANDREW COLE, DANNY ROA, DEANNA OREGERON, and some of their friends hike the 6.6 mile trail Saturday morning. It was a great hike, and we’ll definitely be doing this mountain again! Afterwards, some of us headed to Shore Club where we met up with some other Active-ites to do a little light lifting!

WIL FLUEWELLING Staff Accountant camped in Julian, CA and squeezed in 15 miles of hiking with his girl and 2 dogs. Charlie his 2-year old mixed mutt scouting all the way. Really nice to see the re-growth from the 2003 Cedar Fires and a lot of color from wildflowers in spring bloom.

ANGIE TOWERY and JAMIE CAMERON reported in from the beautiful BIG SUR Marathon and 10.6 mile. They both ran the 10.6 miler in great weather and awesome views along the California central coastline. Angie said Jamie felt so motivated that she is now ready to start training for her first Ironman but only if Reilly is at the finish. Girl make sure you get it done before I’m 70 so I can “see” you finish!

ALLISON REUTTER is blaming her slowest 1/2 marathon time ever in La Jolla on the heat, she ran a 2:12:36. Despite temperatures over 90 degrees, the run was great and made more exciting when we crossed paths with a 4-foot rattlesnake. Overall, it was another solid training session and one step closer to the big race in June.

VICKY EYDELBERG, Director of Product Strategy for Consumer Media hosted a pre-party the night before the race then ran the La Jolla 1/2 in a great time of 2:04:11.

MIKE COLEMAN gets the "Atta Boy" award this week for running the Boston Marathon last Monday and then doing the La Jolla 1/2 6 days later.
St. Patrick's Weekend

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY EVERYONE!

MICHELLE ULRICH in SD ran the St. Patty’s Day Mission Bay 10K and ran a personal record 39:44! WOW what a great time coming in 2nd in her age group and 5th female overall.

ALLY WARD Industry Manager in SD also ran the St. Patty’s Day 10K on Saturday morning. Apparently running 12 minute miles doesn’t get you into the top 3 of your age division, but she had a great time and look forward to doing some more races soon.

It was a family affair for JIM DE LA CRUZ System Administrator who ran with his wife and pushing his 5-year old son Josh this past Saturday at the St. Pat’s 10k at Fiesta Island. It was great weather for the run! Way to go Jim but your son crossed the finish line before you did!

EMILY CHAN-NORRIS Account Manager for Active Trainer also ran the St. Patrick’s Day 4-Mile Run this weekend in Mission Bay Park with fellow Active friends and co-workers KAREN HARDY, BETHANY DOMINICK, and ASHLEY BRINSTER. The beer and pizza waiting for us at the finish line was a little hard to stomach at 8:10am, so we went out for a celebratory brunch instead. Later in the day I hiked at Oak Canyon (part of Mission Trails) which I’d recommend to anyone who wants to feel like they need to get away from San Diego for a bit. Though it was only a short drive from PB, I felt like I was in Wyoming or something. Good times.

On Saturday, TOBY GUILLETTE, CARRIE SMITH and JESSE HAMMOND went for a two-mile swim from La Jolla Shores to La Jolla Cove and back. After the initial numbing of their feet and hands they were able to get moving and had a great swim. They saw some lazy seals floating around, had to crawl over a veritable island of seaweed and rolled along with 10-foot waves. All-in-all, a great way to start the open water swimming season.

TRAVIS FREEBORN in SD rode his bike about 40 miles this weekend up and down the coast of So Cal.

MICHELLE SHAFFER VP Compliance hiked up Cowles Mtn on Saturday enjoying the day.

TINA NOVAK Software Trainer tried out her new Snowboard and went up to Bear Mtn. in So Cal. The board did great and Tina said it passed with flying colors, we hope you did also.

ANDREA RISHMAWI and LINDA MARKEY hiked Iron Mountain in exactly an hour and a half…best time yet! Andrea also did Cowles Mountain this weekend along with a stop at The Field Irish Pub in downtown SD to rehydrate!

KELLY BELL AMG Senior Account Manager enjoyed the beautiful Rocky Mountain National Forest at 9,000+ feet in elevation! I had the pleasure of enjoying the beauty of the RMNF in the winter by taking a snowshoe hike up to Emerald Lake and Alberta Falls. It was great tooling around town (Estes Park) and catching the Elk (behind her in the picture) as they roamed through town as well!

ANDREA RISHMAWI, CARRIE JAMES, ANDREW COLE, JEN ROMINE, and SCARLETT DALGLEISH did the 3 mile hike up and down in about and an hour and a half.

JARED SYMONDS Marketing Assistant in Burnaby played on his Board this weekend at Seymour’s up near North Vancouver, British Columbia. Then he followed it up with 3 hours of flag football at 2pm in La Jolla. I threw about 80 passes and had 15 TDs and 4 Ints.

Then went bowling in downtown San Diego rolling a career high 186

MY RIGHT ARM FEELS LIKE JELLO!! Wonder if Bryan does anything during the week?

TJ HART Data Architect did a 60 mile Saturday bike ride the SD Bicycle Club up Mission Gorge road in San Diego. New to the area he is discovering the diversity of SD County.

BROOKE KIRKPATRICK AE in SD and her fiancée rode the Solvang ½ century and finished up the day with wine tasting! This ride was absolutely gorgeous…we are definitely going back next year to ride the full century!

STEVEN TWOHY Staff Accountant, Corp. Accounting/Finance decided to get the most from the weekend with a 90 mile bike from Pacific Beach to Camp Pendleton and back. For Ironman training that simply was not enough. Sunday morning I was in the ocean doing a mile swim, followed by a two-hour jog up and around Mount Soledad. Apparently the Gail Bernhardt Ironman Training plan is more than I bargained for, it is an excellent plan to say the least, and I felt good enough to bike to work today, so I did. I will be competing in the Arizona Ironman April 13th and am trying to finish strong among my 18-24 male age group competitors. GOOD LUCK Steven and I can’t wait to call you an IRONMAN!

MICHELLE VALENTI Content Producer in San Diego mountain biked in Morro Bay and did a little wine tasting in Paso Robles after. One of these days an Active person will do the wine tasting first then Mtn Bike!

MICHELLE ULRICH in SD is also training for the La Jolla ½ Marathon and had a GREAT 12 mile training run along the coast and finished the last few miles going up and then coming back down the Torrey Pines hill to prepare for the La Jolla Half!

KRISTI DUBIEL Implementation Specialist woke up bright and early and hiked Squaw Peak in Phoenix, AZ. I made it to the summit and back down without stopping in 58 mins…which may not sound like a big deal, but it is like doing the stair climber the entire way up. I am training for a couple of Grand Canyon hikes in June and this is one of the best training trails to hike. On June, 6th I will be hiking the GC Rim to Rim and then on June 13-15 I will be hiking Havasupai Falls. Great PIC looking down from Peak to Phoenix.

She also was a baseball fan this weekend taking in 3 spring training games.

Report from KIRSTIN HARTOS Implementation Specialist. This weekend marked the San Diego Surfers’ 25th Annual Champagne Classic Women’s Rugby Tournament at Robb Field in Ocean Beach, one of the largest women’s rugby tournaments in the country, drawing 15 teams from around North America – including several top ranked squads. I was the lone “Active” member playing for the Surfers this weekend as two of my teammates and fellow Active employees Marea Blue (Implementation Analyst, Endurance) and Emily Ogata (Application Specialist, Team Sports) were sidelined and recovering from their respective surgeries.

Our first match of the day against Chico Women was a bit messy on both sides, but we shut them out and put up at least four tries, making the final score something like 22-0. Our other pool C match pitted us against a tougher, faster and more experienced opponent: “Last Call” (a Beantown traveling team). Our speed on the outside paid off, and our wing was able to touch-down for the Surfers’ single try between the posts, making for an easier conversion. Last Call missed their only conversion, so we came away with a narrow 7-5 victory. In the first round of the championship bracket on Saturday afternoon, we played the Scottsdale Lady Blues. Despite committing a slew of penalties at the try line, we managed to ward off their repeated attacks and were finally able to clear the ball when it popped out the weak side of a ruck to end the first half. Our speed on the outside earned us more tries, and we capped off the match with a number-8 pick up and breakaway from the 50 meter to end the game 19-0.

Sunday morning we faced off against the defending National Champion Berkeley All-Blues in the semifinals, who had beaten their quarterfinal opponent 69-0 the day before. We easily could have resigned our fate before the game looking across the field at many of the best players in the US (USA Eagles), but we came out strong, fought hard, and held our own at times – only allowing them two tries in the first ¾ of the game. Their last two tries came within the last 5 minutes of the match on hard drives from their Eagle prop, making the final score 24-0. Berkeley went on to defeat Boston Women later that day by at least 35 points for the Championship. Great weather, talented teams and competitive games made for a fantastic rugby weekend in San Diego.

CRISTY PLUCHENNIK Staff Accountant ran 5 miles on Saturday as part of my long run training. I am training for the half marathon event as part of TNT in the Rock ’n Roll Marathon on June 1st. If anyone wants to read my story on why I am dedicated to running the half marathon distance and why I joined TNT, the link is www.active.com/donate/tntsdh/Christy4Todd

ASHLEY ELLIS Acct Exec Swimming & STEVE MAZZA did a La Jolla Cove swim this weekend with beautiful weather & cold water, what a great combination! YOU'LL BE BACK ON THE ROAD BEFORE YOU KNOW IT TOBY! Mike

The Active Hiking Group in San Diego ANDREA RISHMAWI, DEANNA ORGERON and ANDREA RISHMAWI (and her friend Kevin Bailey,) met up with LINDA MARKEY, who found us on the Active Community Blog, and hiked Iron Mountain in just about 2 hours Sunday morning.

Very Fast TOYA REAVIS raced in the USA Cross Country Championships/World Team Trials this Saturday at Mission Bay Park in San Diego. I surprised everyone by racing very strong and coming in top 20 in the nation. I raced in the 8K Master’s Championship. My time was 34:15; which is great for me considering I am an 800/1500 meter runner.

STEVE MAZZA went to Austin, TX to help his event and ran the AT&T Austin Half Marathon, amid the largest field of runners in the race’s history, on a hilly half course with start and finish on Congress St in front of the Texas state capitol and a 1:49 PR for me.

SCOTT ROBINSON up North is the General Manager of a team that just clinched second place in the BC Major Midget Hockey League this weekend.

Check them out at www.vancouver-canadians.com

ANGIE TOWERY in SD also went to Austin and ran the Austin Half this weekend with my sister (our second half together) and because I didn’t train, my time was a little slow (2:18), but the really cool thing is that I got to run in with the Elite Marathon finishers!! That was definitely the highlight of my run….maybe I’ll run all my runs at the expected finish time of the marathon finishers!

EDDIE STRICKLER a track star in Bothell ran the 800 in the University of Washington open indoor track meet on Sunday. I was quite pleased with my time of 1:53.43. We all would be pleased!

HAVE A GREAT WEEK TEAM!

Mike

CHRIS CONNORS, Technology Consultant in San Diego and his Active friends/co-workers CHRIS BOHNERT, MARQUES CHARBONNET, CHRIS WHEELER, REBECCA DIVITA, and ANDREW COLE drove up to Mammoth Mountain Friday night and went snow boarding/skiing all day Saturday. The conditions were pretty intense with 22mph winds and ended up being a complete white out and not being able to see 10 feet in front of you. Saturday night it snowed almost 2ft. of snow and the winds were 33mph on Sunday so they closed the Mountain which was a bummer. Please see attached picture! The weekend was a blast!

NICO REIS, Account Manager, International in Germany, is well underway in his Basketball season. “We had a major game this Saturday, against our biggest rival in the league! The winner of the game would stay in the top position and get a lot closer to the championchip. Well enough said, we won a very interesting and tough game with 106 to 98. As often, I didn’t score too much (I think 6 points or 8) but had about 15 rebounds and about 4 blocked shots! But (again I finished on the bench with 5 fouls, I guess I shouldn’t have watched all the Pre Superbowl "Best tackles of all time" video clips...

CARRIE SMITH, Marketing Services Conversion Specialist in San Diego ran the Xterra Mission Gorge Trail 15k on Sunday. In true trail running and Xterra form, there was plenty of rain, wind, and mud. Luckily there were stream-crossings almost every mile to wash off some of the mud. It was sloppy and slippery, but a great time!

Christmas Weekend then off to Guam 12/22/07

I HOPE YOU ALL HAD A JOYOUS CHRISTMAS AND THERE WERE A COUPLE OF ACTIVE TEAM MEMBERS WORKING OUT THIS PAST WEEKEND. Mike

CAITLYN BARKER in SD along with her boyfriend has a list of things they want to do together before he deploys next week to Guam where he flies the H60 Sierra Helicopter for the Navy. If you live in San Diego you’ve probably seen these big workhorse copters over Coronado training. Well one of their laundry list items was to hike a local Mountain Cuyamaca. They did it on one of the coldest (below freezing) and windiest weekends of the year. But the climb was well worth the view from the top down to the Salton Sea plus they topped it off in the small mountain town of Julian, CA enjoying their famous Julian apple pie.

CAITLYN WISH GOOD LUCK TO YOUR BOYFRIEND AND THANK HIM FOR US SERVING OUR COUNTRY!

EDDIE STRICKLER from WA ran the 29th annual Cable Bridge Run in Pasco, WA. It must have been a large 5K because Eddie said he was the first to cross the finish line but someone that started after him actually won with his chip time. He ran a fast 16:59 and did end up 2nd overall. Eddie had a blast catching up with old running buddies after the race.

AND if anyone is interested I’m leaving from my house in Poway this Friday morning (yes taking the day off) at 9:30 AM (too cold earlier) for a 55 to 60 mile ride. Some of you know the route that goes past the Wild Animal Park and climbs up to Ramona then loops back to Poway. It’s a fairly difficult ride but a ton of fun with a bunch of Sun! Call me if you are going to make it 619 742-0580, 16888 St. Andrews Dr. Poway.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
