The crime of the century has nothing to do with Enron???but instead lies with the injustice done to former Negro Leagues player Buck O???Neill. Last week the Hall of Fame inducted 17 players from the Negro leagues and pre-Negro leagues era yet this list DID NOT include O???Neill???who hit .288 lifetime and was the first black coach in the major leagues. Nobody has done more to promote, celebrate, and keep alive the oral history of the Negro Leagues than Buck O???Neill.

The decision provoked angry reactions from not only hall of famers, like Ernie Banks and Hank Aaron, but also members of congress who threatened to cancel legislation that would have celebrated the inductees. Most surprising is the fact that all of these ballots are kept secret and the identity of the voters remains a mystery. The full article on Yahoo News can be found here.

This story brings up two questions. Should the identity and voting records of secret ballots for things like the hall of fame be revealed to the public? And should the baseball hall of fame take into account more than just statistics???but also factor in one???s overall contribution to a sport?

Is the inference that racism is at work again? Or is it that the voters are just inept and have again blown one? Over the years other candidates have been, "snubbed" by this body only to gain admission later. And some have been denied entry, like Pete Rose, on criteria beyond the playing of the game. What is being expressed in the vote is opinion. No more significance should be attributed to it than that. There will be another day.

Don't be so quick to cry "conspiracy." I don't think Buck O'Niell would be doing anything but celebrating the accomplishments of those inducted. It is neither surprising nor mysterious that the ballots are "secret." Secret ballots are a staple of honest voting and the Hall has always taken more into account hten statistics. Congress should certainly stick to what they do best and not try to punish the inductees because of the votes. Is there someone who was inducted who should not have been? Are you suggesting we add to the list or replace someone with O'Niell? If so, who? Next year, make sure he is on the ballot again. Many players do not get inducted the first time they are on the ballot and the comments of Anonymous (above) are also worth considering.

i personally got the chance to meet buck oneill back in 2000. people need not to worry so much about buck eventually being inducted into the HOF. he has been on the induction committee for many many years. while you are a member of that committee you are not elegible to be up for vote into the hall. if he wasnt on that committee for so many years he would have already been in the HOF

What criteria did they use and how does Buck's stand up to the rest? In any case I'm surprised at the community of HOF voters if O'Neill's stats are anywhere close to the others inducted. If his crteria does not come close then creating a special category of former pro ambassadors would be fine by me.
