Barry Bonds and *steroids*--it seems the two have been linked for years. But yesterday an explosive excerpt from the book ???Game of Shadows??? on the Sports Illustrated website provided some pretty strong evidence that Barry Bonds has knowingly taken steroids since 1999.

The real question is not whether Barry Bonds will be admitted to the Hall of Fame. (He probably will???despite these new allegations.) But assuming that Bonds is guilty should his amazing career records???he is currently third on the all-time home run list???be amended or even removed? Should there be an asterix next to Bonds??? records as well as other players of the ???steroid??? era? Or without conclusive evidence should these records remain intact and unblemished?

Bonds is no doubt a great ball player but is a poor sportsman. Taking performance enhancers cheapens America's sport and teaches our youth that it is ok to cheat. I for one think that Bonds is a selfish player and does not deserve to be compared to the "Babe" or Mays.

Take everything into consideration. Did he cheat? we really do not know. Couple his homeruns with his batting average and on base percentage (because of the obscene # of intentional walks) and my personal feeling is he is the greatest ball player of all time. This being said, he is not my favorite person of all time. He will never compare to the likes of George Brett, Carl Yastremski, Jackie Robinson, Cal Ripken, etc... But the real fact is that he doesn't have to. There should be no asterick or ammendment made to his achievement (By the way, he has gold gloves, batting titles, home run titles and mvp awards - The man is an amazing ball player) Those of you who allow someone like Barry Bonds or any professional athlete to be a role model for your children should be ashamed. That is a parents responsibility!

bonds should not be listed in the same category as babe ruth. he is selfish and it is great he will never get a ring.he is a cheater and there should be an asterik by his name for steroids use.he is not the best ball player, he is the best hitter.

for barry bonds to say he didn't know he was taking steroids is so pathetic. he needs to look at his before and after pictures so he can see the size of his head.he considers himself smart so he wouldn't put something in his body that he wouldn't know the contents.he is not the best player he is the best batter. the best players are ripken and arod.nobody will look up to bonds.mostly because he's a arogant s.o.b.

Barry Bonds lied under oath as well as "cheating" to achieve the records he has set. I think these things make him ineligible for the Hall of Fame. Certainly, what Pete Rose did is no more harmful to the sport of baseball and he is barred from the Hall of Fame. Bonds should be barred also.

Even the idea of of adding an asterisk without conclusive proof is shameful.Joshua KarlinDirector AA Little Leaguehttp://www.fpesll.com/

Of course if you want to discuss asterisks if there is proof, then that is another story.Joshua KarlinDirector AA Little LeagueProvidence, RI East Side Little League

Bye-Bye Barry and your records Absolutely no comparison with the old timers, what a shame for any player to break records with the help of steroids. Step down while you have a chance.

Perhaps Bonds was on steroids. But nobody ever wants to point out that many of the pitchers he has faced in his career were also probably on steroids. Last year when MLB instituted the mandatory 10-game suspension for positive steroid tests, a number of players who came back hot were pitchers. It is well known that pitchers use the juice to speed up recovery and keep them relatively pain free when they take the mound.I'm not defending Bonds' use of performance enhancers. But those of you who argue that he's doing something that Ruth and Aaron didn't do, you fail to consider that the pitchers he faces today are also doing something that the pitchers Ruth and Aaron faced didn't do, either.

bonds can't hide from this whole steroids issue. he will always be known for steroids whether he gets an asterik or not.he will also always be known for a cheater and a liar.others have taken steroids for sure but we are talking about records here and that's why his name keeps coming up. if he had the record now he wouldn't be playing.

???? At what point did steroid use in MLB become illegal? In a multi-million dollar per year competitive market, OF COURSE those who can become more competitive will - especially if your competition is doing the same, and the use is not specifically illegal. But Bonds has yet to be PROVEN guilty -- all of you are jumping the gun. The fact that the journalists are saying so is meaningless. My bottom line is that Bonds continues to hit home runs AT LEAST once every 8 at bats or less, and he is over 40 years old. Further, he has repeatedly tested clean from steroid use. In my book he has become the greatest power hitter ever, and presently continues that performance drug free. My ONLY consideration is what he does on the field, and I applaud his disdain of the media and all those who feel he owes anyone anything other than the brilliance he brings to the playing field every time he steps on it. I think the only crime is the hounding this magnificent athlete must endure while just trying to play. Got a need for sensationalism? Use a **** site. Meanwhile leave the guy alone.

No wonder he avoided publicity all these years wouldn't you if you were viably in reach of the greatest valued records in baseball and were taking a buffet of performance"enhancement" substances that bordered legal or illegal and sooner or later upon acheiving those great records he'd be accountable. Seems if your defense is everybody's doing it then, the leadership of baseball should show it has a pair of real baseballs and designate a time frame analgous to the "dead ball era" perhaps maybe the"steroid era" and there you have it your own special records-everyone can get on with the future.

All of Barry Bonds records should be removed. He's never been a decent guy, but that is immaterial. He CHEATED, plain and simple. Records attained by cheating don't count. Come on Bud Selig. For once step up and do what's right.

So far, he is innocent. However, the authorities should use any new information in the book as "probable cause" and intensify their investigation. If he is found conclusively to have used, then the Giants should forfeit all games in which he was in the lineup while under the influence. If the games were not played, then the hits, homers, etc., did not occur. No asterisk is needed, just reduce bis numbers to the levels that he achieved without steroids. However, all of this depends upon a legitimate investigation leading to a finding of "guilty" (or its equivalent) through due process.

ok, yes he did use steroids, but he used them before they were illegal in baseball. he didn't break any rules and everyone dogging him just doesn't want someone to break your favorite players records. if none the less he adds excitement to our sport by making everyone wonder how the next drug test will come out. You have to see some humor in it.

little league manager and coach of softball and baseball. Is there absolute proof! Not that I have read about. Anybody can say anything about anybody. Should there be an asterisk by his name, yes if he is guilty, no if he is not,and it is up to us as parents to teach our kids the positives and negatives of taking any drug, and not to believe everything you read.

Barry Bonds never once hit even 50 HR's until 2001 when he hit 73? give me a break barry you haven't hit 50 HR"S since then. you are a cheat and a liar.

all records should have asteriks on them between 1995 and 2005.then fans can take the records or leave them. babe ruth and roger maris should be considered the champs in those categories.

Mar 17, 2006 3:54 PM Reply Guest Anonymous

it really doesn't matter anymore, the harm has been done. there will always be questions no matter what happens now.we will have to tell the story of steroids to all the younger kids and then tell how maris still owns the record.

Mar 17, 2006 3:56 PM Reply Guest Anonymous

bonds is not innocent--he said he used the clear and the cream but didn't think it was steroids. that is enough to say he had help whether they were against the law at that time or not.

Mar 24, 2006 4:59 PM Reply Guest Anonymous

bonds used steroids, the size of his pumpkin head tells everyone that. the fact that all his hair fell out and his back was severly stricken with acne, reeks of steroids.the naive or just plain idiots who believe bonds are truly too stupid to live.

Bonds said it BEST ... "Let's be adults, shall we," said Bonds. "This whole controversy has sprung up because I'm a black man, a proud black man whose veins just happen to be coursing with equine growth hormone. I for one am sick and- Neigh! The media needs to get over it's- Mmmmph neigh!"

May 19, 2006 10:04 PM Reply Guest Anonymous

The real issue is white people hate the fact that a BLACK MAN is better that babe ruth. The majority of you speaking/writing about ruth wasn't around when he was playing so you don't know what enhancers he took back then; so shut the h--- up and give Barry Bonds his props.

"Love him or hate him, you have to admit that Barry Bonds is on fire this season," said MLB Commissioner Bud Selig. I'm glad that Barry is finally being recognized for his true talent."
