Well, as jdfromfla mentions, wina t all costs does seem to permeate all of our sports.
Though, it is apples and oranges to compare holding in football and grabbing a jersey in basketball to what Kenny Rogers did. Basketball and Football officials call those things if thye see them... the umpires in game 2 just basically blew the whole thing off.
"We observed that it was dirt," is a load of hogwash. They didn't want to have a situation develop and so didn't confront Rogers. The whole thing is compounded when the head of the officials says the same thing.
They either don't realize or don't care that their actions are seen as condoning cheating by every kid playing a sport.
Unfortunately it's hard for parents and youth coaches to instill the proper attitudes when this type of thing happens and is not confronted.
You say other sports are more stringent? What about the guy in basketball who because he's been screened from a ref grabs a guys shirt so he can't get a rebound or the constant types of holding/cheapshots given in trenches in a football game. Our society is guilty of this, we are all collectively guilty of allowing this win or die mentality to permeate our entire society. Rogers is a small microcosm of what our narcossistic society promotes. Why don't American teams win anymore in things like Olympic basketball or the World Baseball classic? Sacrifice of self has become a quaint old funny little habit..to be sneared at as stupid. We bought this and we should all take a long look in the mirror as we wear it.
