Beach Volleyball Hits the NCAA

Posted by mikeyactive on Apr 28, 2009 2:04:09 PM

The NCAA has approved "sand'' volleyball

for varsity  competition at the college ranks beginning in 2010-11. Read the whole story here.

It will take some time for hte NCAA to figure out things like....you know...rules. And it will be called "sand volleyball" because apparently "beach volley" will alienate landlocked schools.

Do you think it will succeed as an NCAA sport? How do you think this will affect the tenous balance of title ix scholarships?

It will be interesting to see how the scholarships will be handled, and how much sand volleyball will overlap indoor volleyball in terms of athletes. Since sand will be in the spring, do you just take a couple of your best athletes from indoor and make a sand team out of them? Do you recruit specifically for sand? Will it be like cross country, where they also run distance on the track team?

I'm not familiar with the differences between the two games in the point of view of the athlete, but I have to think the skills carry over.

Also, 75 percent of the country will be freezing cold once the spring season starts. How will that work in the sand game? Women playing in sweats? Indoor sand courts?

A lot of interesting angles could come of this soon.
