It's been 5 weeks since my last LSD or

speed work - letting my ankle get better. And it does seem much improved. I've

now got some reasonable tempo runs and some easy runs in last week and Monday

this week and I feel pretty good. I'm going to try an LSD this afternoon

(targeting 18, but I'll base that on how I feel). 18 is a big increase on the

miles I've been running, so I'm really counting on the large base I've developed

over the past couple of years to get me back to that level quickly. But we'll

see. I'll definitely run slowly. And stay off the hills for now. Just see how it

goes.

Afterall, it's only 13 weeks to the MCM...

A Glitch in the Training

Posted by Steve Carton Jul 13, 2009

Well, I'm not doing so great.

About a month ago, I developed a sharp pain in my right ankle. I stayed off it, used ice for a bit and then went to the Dr. I was concerned that it might be a stress fracture. I've only run once since the pain started - about 4.5 miles very easy and it hurt. The doc did an xray and said it isn't a stress fracture, but an injury from about 15 years ago (basketball) that hadn't healed properly. A bit of weak cartilage had broken off and was twisting into the ankle joint, causing the pain. He gave me some stretching and strengthening exercises. Told me it was okay to run, but to use the pain as my guide - don't run if it hurts. And he has me scheduled for surgery in late August. His thinking is that it will likely remediate by then if I do the exercises, but that it takes 6-8 weeks to get onto the surgery calendar. This way, I'm scheduled and I can cancel if the problem goes away.

So I've been doing the exercises (not religiously, but fairly regularly) and they do seem to help. I'm going for an easy run this evening - hopefully with good result.

I've been using BodyGlide for every marathon and training run and never had a problem. But in a comment to a post back in May, I was advised of another product: SportShield from TwoToms. I hadn't gotten around to trying it, but bought a roll-on tube recently and got to try it on my long run yesterday.

I think the jury is still out. I use BodyGlide both on my inner thighs and on my nipples for long runs and marathon races. Yesterday was a 19 mile LSD and I liberally applied the SportShield to both places (well, all four, but who's counting). At the end, my nipples were fine. My inner thighs seemed to be a little raw, but not really noticable. So I'll try it again next week. But I've never noticed any rawness at all after using BodyGlide.

Psyched for Frederick

Posted by Steve Carton Apr 30, 2008

I've been worried about this race owing to a nagging knee-cap injury. I've had more or less swelling due to water-on-the-knee from an injury back in January where I slipped on a chartered sailboat in the BVIs and whacked my knee. It was swollen but okay when I ran the B&A marathon in March, but has gotten tighter and more sore in training since, especially going down hills. I had gotten to the point of walking downstairs sideways.

So, I went to the orthopod yesterday and got about 6cc of fluid drained (aspirated?) from the outside of my left kneecap. Looked like pee! After that, he injected 2ccs of cortisone. It felt better almost instantly. After I got up this morning, I was bouncing down the stairs to make coffe and was half-way down before I realized it had been at least a month since it had last been that easy. So now I'm all psyched for the marathon on Sunday. No pain, so no worries.

How could I have forgotten this! I started my long run yesterday and totally forgot to apply body-glide to my inner legs. We were heading out for an 18 mile run with some good hill work. I got to around mile 10 and had such bad chafing that I was starting to run bow-legged. In another couple of miles, my hips started to hurt, and my knees!  Ended up walking the last mile. It was awful!

The Forced Taper

Posted by Steve Carton Feb 19, 2008

Less than two weeks to the B&A marathon. Definately in taper mode. I took the past week off to let my knee heal a bit and then ran a short 5 miles last Saturday. It was an okay run, though I felt a bit leaden. Too much time off? Not sure. But my knee felt fine while I was running. I had planned to run 12 or so, but I got to about 5 and mother nature intervened. So I plodded on home to use the facilities and never made it back out the door again

But later that evening, my knee (outside, over the top of the cap) was very tender. I was quite worried, but by today (Tuesday) it feels fine again. So, I'm trying to decide if I should run at all during the rest of my taper, or if I should just let the knee rest, or if I should skip this marathon altogether! It's a hard decision. I'm signed up for Frederick in a couple of months, so the time off may be a good thing. But I really love the B&A marathon and want to run it. I'm sure I can get through it -- the issue is one of doing more permanent damage.

Ah well, decisions, decisions, decisions...

I would have thought that after all the marathon training and post-marathon running, the insides of my thighs would be pretty much toughened by now. Wow -- wrong! I did a short 6.5 tempo run last evening and it was a very nice run; north past National Airport, into DC, partway down Haines point and then back. I had a newish pair of shorts -- or at least a pair I hadn't used in a looong time.  In the winter I run in shorts with no liner. I wear underwear instead. Otherwise certain parts of me get too cold.  So I was wearing these shorts with no liner and a pair of undies (some technical brand -- make me think of the days ahead when I'll need them for other reasons!). When I was running long runs before the marathon, I would always goop up with body glide. But never for a short run.

Well, At about mile 4, I started to hurt. By mile 5, I was running bowlegged to keep from rubbing it more. At the end, I was raw. So much so that it hurt to walk and I left blood stains on the car seat. Maybe it was the humidity. Maybe it was the shorts. I just don't know for sure.

I think I'll skip the run today. Tomorrow is supposed to be my long run, but I think I may skip that too. Never again will I forget my BodyGlide!
