Is this a good, realistic plan?

So I am a brand new runner (duh, that's why I'm posting here ). I got into running because "all my friends were doing it" sometime in mid-may. I walked my first 5k on June 8th with a decent time of 55:14 (wasn't going for time, goal was to finish). My friend (who has run in the past) signed up for the Disney Princess 1/2 Marathon in Feb 2014 and I decided to throw caution to the wind and join her. I'd like to have a time to submit to get myself out of the last corral - which means I need a decent time in a 10k by the end of November. I just signed up for a local Galloway training group that starts July 8th and have been attempting to follow his training plan (we've had a lot of tornado-bad weather recently, so it's impeding my outdoor time). My current plan is to do one race every 4-6 weeks until December. I was going to do 2 more 5ks and then hopefully start 10ks in September so that I have a few opportunities to improve my time before it is due for submission. Is this realistic? I feel very confused and I'm hoping the training group will get me understanding what I need to do. My goal for the 1/2 is to finish without being swept.

I am trying to do the c25k or a modified version.

I was extremely active in High School, but family, etc happened and now I am no where near where I want to be.

(Please does respond with "you should see your doctor" I don't have insurance and can't afford one - I would like advice, thoughts, commiseration, etc)

Here is my problem:

Every other morning I go for a walk. I know that I am not ready to just start c25k straight out because I've been so inactive and now heavy. I have a 3 mile walking loop that I'm trying to complete.

I had shin splints as a teen, they were never treated, but weren't a real issue then. Now, they are. After walking about 500-700 paces, my right leg starts. The pain is similar to burning and runs up my calf just behind my outer ankle, then spreads to the front of my ankle and shin. I try to get to the first bench before stopping. At that point, I stretch again. Interestingly, what helps to relieve the pain the most is to point my toe while I have my foot on the bench. Then I start walking again - repeat as necessary. I go as far as I can and then a little before going to my car with both ankles on fire.

It isn't getting any better, it is starting sooner. I used to be able to make it to the 2000 pace mark (1 mile) before having to stop to stretch.

I have started icing and using a rod after I get back home, which feels good, but...

I'm not pushing at all. I had been trying to get in a little joggin here and there, but my ankles said H--- no! So I haven't tried again.

I do flexing exercises at home.

I have noticed that I am having to stop my walking sooner and sooner.

I even took a week off to let them relax, but that didn't help.

I am wondering if there is more than just shin splints here? My hope is that this is mostly just inactivity for my legs and they are complaining because of that. I've done a lot of checking about shin splints, and my pain isn't quite the same. I have been told I over pronate, too, but not badly.

Should I just keep pushing through and they will strengthen?

Oh, one thing I did notice as I was walking yesterday - I feel like I never leave my heels, as though my toes and the ball aren't being used. So I started focusing on rolling my foot from heel to toe and it did seem to delay the onset of the pain for a bit- does that ring a bell with anyoen?

Thanks in advance.

weekly long run or not

Hi everyone

I’m 47 and running mainly for health but also entering some 5 and 10 K runs (and eventually a half marathon) and would like to improve my times. My current schedule is two short runs on Wednesday and Friday and a long run on Sunday, the short runs are a little over 5 miles and the long is in the 10 mile range. I can’t run every day (at least not the distances I’ve been running) or my knees get sore. My question is if I’d be better off running the 5 miles every other day and only running the long run every other week. Over a month the distances would be about the same and there would only be one additional run with the every other day routine so they seem pretty even in those aspects. I’ve just started doing an interval run once a week so I’ll do that for either routine.

I’m not sure there would be much of a difference either way for general health or from a time improvement point of view. I do know that I, oddly enough, enjoy the long run, and if I only do it every other week I’m more sore the next couple of days afterwards, but not so much if I’m doing it each week.

I’m sure there’s no definitive answer, but I’d appreciate anyone’s feedback or advice. If you need any more info let me know.

Thanks

Dave
