Running after ACL

Hi everyone. I have recently gotten more into serious running after some years of just dabbling in 5Ks. The issue that I am encountering is knee pain following ACL surgery 2 years ago. I am feeling like my knee isn't tracking well at times and I get a lot of unilateral leg pain while I am running (particularly my lower leg). How has anyone else's post-surgery course been? Thanks!

Jessica

timing and priority of a post-run routine: ice, stretch and advil.

Since I've begun running (only a few months) I've become very addicted to my post-run routine... about 20 minutes of thorough stretching that seems to mentally and physically cap off the session. Recently, (4 weeks or so) I've been dealing with some pain in my knee cap. I've been pretty cautious about it: allowed more rest time between runs, started on Glucoseamine/Chondroitin, ice/elevation, etc...

But the other day I read that the key to effective icing is to not waste any time: ice/elevate the area immediately after a run. Sooo. I took that to heart and switched the order: first run, next prop the iced knee up for 15 minutes, and then finally finish with 20 minutes of stretching. But this has just felt all wrong. I mean, by the time I'm iced down I have no motivation to stretch afterwards. And even when I've forced myself to the stretching it doesn't feel nearly as deep, focused or effective and overall is not satisfying. Intuitively, I feel like the first routine was more effective, but I don't presume to understand the science of it all and want to do whatever is smartest for protecting my knee (and body in general) from injury. Any advice on the order? Run, ice, stretch? Run stretch, ice? I could also stretch and ice at the same time (the ice pack has an elastic-y wrap on it) but then I wouldn't be elevating the knee. Also, at what point in here should i take ibuprofen? After the run, ice or stretch? Or am i totally over-thinking the whole thing?

Calf Strain or Achilles Tendonitis? Marathon 3 Weeks Out

Hey everyone! I'm training for Charlotte (December 12), my fourth marathon (but my first three were in 2001). Near the end of my second 21-miler this past Saturday I started getting some pain in my lower left calf. Later in the day it was surprisingly tender to the touch; however, the next day the pain was all but gone. Went for an easy 30-minute run on Monday and the pain was back within a mile.

Frantic googling makes me think this is either achilles tendonitis or a calf strain. Most of what I read about calf strains make it sound like a sudden, kicked-in-the-leg-type injury. So maybe this is achilles tendonitis?

I've been icing the leg some, and having it wrapped during the day, which helps. But how much time do I take off? I suppose I could take off until the marathon and just take my chances, but I'd rather keep running if I can. I've got a 12-miler on Saturday - should I just give it a shot, and stop the second I feel anything? Can you run with your calf wrapped up? I assume so...

What would you all suggest? I can't really afford to go to a doctor or sports therapist, so that's not an option. Thanks for any advice you might have!

[EDIT: I don't have any pain in the calf right now when walking or stretching.]

Inner Thigh Pain....

I am not sure what to call it. About 2 1/2 weeks ago I was doing strides as part of my strength training when it felt as if I pulled something. It was a slight issue so the next day, I was out running with little pain - until the end of the run. I am still having the pain at this time and have been doing minor running/ exercise while waiting for the final run of the season (Thursday.)

I am trying to figure out what it is. Since the pain is minor I do not want to aggervate it and it seems to be getting better. It is on the right side , inner thigh/ hip. Basically, I feel pain when I push down on my heel. Pushing off with my foot is not a problem and situps are without pain. I can work out on the elliptical machine without any problems also. It seems to be more of the impact of the running/ walking. In addition, it does stiffen up if I am sitting too long in one position.

The last run I made I was fine until it came time to stretch at the end. It felt as if my leg was going to give out with the pain coming down my inner thigh to my knee. The way I was running when I first injured it made me think of a pulled groin muscle. From what I have read, that might not be accurate and it may be more of an inner thigh (basically right where the inner leg and hip meet.)

Any ideas of what else I can do besides taking it easy. I am not real confident in my doctor when it comes to sports injuries. Earlier this year I went to see him about pain in my lower leg/ shin area. After multiple visits, X Rays and ultra sounds - he could not give me an answer. I then looked up some information on this site and the description of my shin splints was spot on. Needless to say, I am hesitant in going back to talk with him about this injury.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Eric

Calcaneus Stress Fracture

So about two months ago I thrusted myself into some higher mileage, faster pace, and a lot more frequent running. Pretty much the perfect makings for a problem, and alas, I started having pain on the outside of my left heel along with some pretty sizeable swelling.

After I visited with the orthopedist last Friday and getting an x-ray I found out my pain was caused by a fairly large stress fracture. Since I had been resting for the previous few weeks before I visited with him he suggested that I take the next three weeks to use a stationary bike to maintain my fitness before coming back to running. I've heard that using a stationary bike can be often recommended by physicians, but that some avid runners do not recommend this. However, from what I can tell the opposition for using a stationary bike involves runners with stress fracture in their shins or femurs. ? I would just jump into doing some pool work outs, but as I will not use a fitness center after my injury has healed I would prefer not to. Any input on this

Also, does anyone have any links or suggestions on some good techniques of getting back into my old running shape when I come back after the injury?

Thanks a ton!

I'm sorry that my first post on this site is a request for help, but I'm desperate and need some advice.

After a long run on Monday night I have had pain on the outside of my foot. My run was about 7 miles, and my average run distance is around 3-4 miles. Up until that run, I hadn't run in over a week. I know it was bad... I promise I'll never do it again.

The pain mostly concentrated at the outside edge of my foot below my ankle, but I have some mild pain just to the back of the knob on my ankle too. When sitting or standing still I have absolutely no pain. When not loaded, I can move my foot in all directions with no pain. When I walk or move around while standing the pain is pretty intense. Also, if I walk barefoot I have almost no pain at all.

I went to see a sports medicine doctor. He spend all of 2 minutes diagnosing me and said he thought it was a stress fracture. He had me stand up and jump up and down. I had no pain with either. I'm no doctor, but I'm seriously questioning his diagnosis. I've done some research and it looks like there are two or three likely possibilities.

A stress fracture. According to the location of the pain, maybe a cuboid fracture although they sound pretty rare.

Peredonal tendonitis. Since I ran significantly longer than I normally do. Plus my calves were really tight earlier in the week.

Cuboid syndrome. This seems like it's hard to diagnose and even tougher to find someone to treat.

I have a really important 7m race on Saturday that I REALLY don't want to miss.

That being said, I have a couple of questions.

Does it sound to you like it is a stress fracture or whas I misdiagnosed?

Since many here are veteran runners, do you think I should risk it and run on Saturday?

I plan to go for a short run tonight and see what happens. I'll post my results.

Thank you to all who reply.

Shin & knee pain

I am following the C25K plan. I started week 6 on Monday. As soon as I started running, the inside of my left knee started to hurt. I finished the program but for the first time since I started, my legs felt heavy and my knee continued to hurt. My shins bother me as well when I run but recently I started getting momentary sharp pains in my shins off and on through the day. They are split seconds of pain, sometimes quite sharp and in both legs. My knee does not hurt all the time, but it does hurt when I walk, especially up and down the stairs. I was scheduled to do W6D2 today, but took the day off and may just use the bike or elliptical tomorrow. I have been on a roll with this plan and really hate to take anytime off...I guess I don't know when to run through the pain and when not to. I am not in agony, but the pain is more worrisome then anything else. Is this normal? Any thoughts?

Thanks!
