I've set out to train for 3 marathons over the years but have yet to even start one due to injuries. You should be very proud.

Knee brace?

I also posted this in 'The Med Tent' forum because I wasnt sure where it should go:

Can anyone suggest a good knee brace that I can use while running? I'm 46 years old and I have self-diagnosed osteoarthritis. I think the arthroscopic surgery I had a few years back for a torn meniscus along with many years of basketball and soccer have really weakened my left knee's connective tissue. I'm now finding that any increase in mileage is really being felt in my knee. I've been doing strengthening exercises for my quads and hams along with taking glucosamine but I'd like a little extra help in the form of a knee brace that I can use while running. I'd like something that is available over the counter. I've read some stuff about 'unloader braces' but I'm not sure if you can use them while running.

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated!

Thx

Adam

Running with arch support in the only one shoe??

I think I'm going to start with no arch support for the healthy foot and see how that goes. Eventually I'm hoping I can get back to not using any arch supports when my pf has 'cleared up'. We'll see.

I am recovering from plantar fasciatus in my left foot and I have resumed some light running. I've been using an arch support but only on the injured foot. A friend recently suggested that I start wearing an arch support in both shoes to avoid a leg length discrepancy down the road. In the past I've used an arch support in the right foot but quickly developed some pain on the outside of the foot. Not sure what to do. Any input or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Adam

Bunions??

Can anyone give advice to a runner with bunions? My wife has a family history of bunions and she's been running for the last 5 or 6 years and her bunions appear to be getting worse. She has pain from time to time after her runs but she was wondering if there was any way to slow down or turn back the progression of bunions. I've read some stuff about using arch supports along with some mixed reviews about night splints. Just wondering if anyone has had success against bunions. thanks!!!

Determing pace for next HM?

I recently ran my first HM and it was a blast. My overall pace for the race was 8:30. I'm already in the planning stages for my next HM in about 3 months and I want to use the FIRST program. This program suggests that you use an estimated race pace and base all your training runs on that time. I'm not sure what to use as my target race pace. Going into this last race, because it was my first one, I was very conservative and was hoping to be able to do it at an 8:45 pace. Granted I really gave it all I had and ran the last 6 miles at around 8:15, something that I'd never done before. Now, prepping for this next race, I'm not sure what I should expect------should I just be happy with another 8:30? Should I shoot for an even 8:00? The final race result doesn't really matter to me so much but I want a 'starting' figure that I can use to base my training runs on. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thx!

I agree with the person who mentioned that you might be overtraining. I'm in my early 40's and I only get into the 160's in my HR on tempo runs. My long runs are typically in the high 130's-mid 140's. If you're in your early 20's then maybe that's a good HR for a 'long' run.
