question for anyone using heart rate training: HR zones and races

hey guys,

thanks for the answer. This upcoming Boston will be my 11th marathon, so I'm no rookie.

That said, I'm always trying to find ways to refine.

Running wise, I definitely feel like my running has reached a plateau. Hopefully the HR training will help.

Re: using the HR monitor during the marathon (or any other race). Thedevotedrunner and ydiez make a great point in that the HR monitor will be a much better indicator of effort (taking into account external factors like heat/humidity) than pace. I love the feeling of running a great race but feel that a great race is a good time considering my training, the conditions, and how I feel during and after the race.

I'll wear my HR monitor during Boston but will not use it as a guide since I havne't been training on it and as ydiez mentioned, the max HR rate could be off ---meaning that my HR ranges wouldn't be accurate.

question for anyone using heart rate training: HR zones and races

So I just picked up a book on heart rate (HR) training and will be starting one of the recommended training programs from the book soon. That said, I have been training for the Boston Marathon and have NOT been using HR training.

Everyone knows the advice of NOT starting the marathon too fast. Typically, the advice is to make sure that your pace is not too fast out of the gate.

Does anyone know if it would be acceptable to substitute the recommended marathon race HR of 80-85% (based on my initial internet research) for pace? Assuming that the max HR formula is fairly accurate for me, shouldn't this give me an accurate measure of level of effort?

Or should I just stick with pace?

In any case, I stumbled on another site and saw this: http://www.fitness-equipment.com/acatalog/Fitness_Equipment_Pulse_Monitor___Heart_Rate_Monitor_Heartrate_Monitor_Chest_Strap_1033.html

Does anyone know if the replacement straps on these are universal? There's no brand name associated with this...I didn't know if Polar, Timex, Nike, etc. all had different strap/elastic components...

Hopefully, he feels much much better and stays that way! !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!

confetti
- I was actually sort of in your neck of the woods this weekend. A bunch of my friends and I had a reunion of sorts. I went down to Hoboken on Friday night (lightning fast time from Boston at 3 hours and 15 minutes...clearly nascar needs to recruit me).

On Saturday, morning we met up to play golf on Staten Island. I was a bit worried about my shoulder (first time playing golf since before the surgery) but apparently the shoulder is great and the doctor happened to fix something in my swing too! I somehow managed to shoot a 108 (not the best score...I know) but that's
at least
a 10 stroke improvement on my previous best. I somehow managed to hit every drive straight down the fairway and minimized my 10+ stroke holes to 0 (usually I have a several blow ups along the way). Anyway, Saturday night we all went out in Hoboken for Mexican and then to a bar down there. All of us got completely hammered but my roommates and I did manage in our drunken stupor to lay a whoopin down on some punks in darts. !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/biggrin.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/biggrin.gif|border=0!

Sunday was spent hating life in general. We went back to Staten Island to watch every NFL game (my buddy has direct TV). The initial plan was to watch the 1pm games and then leave for Boston. But that didn't happen, instead I stuck around till after 9pm game was going and didn't get home this morning until close to 1am. Uggh...so tired.

SST
- no way man! I'm doing Marine Corp too! I'm doing a 20 miler this weekend (not a race) but it'll be my last long run and then it's taper time.

Don't worry at all about the bumps in the road. Better now than on Oct 28th, right? Besides, I tend to think of training as a learning experience. You can try out whatever you like to see if it works for you or not. I wouldn't be too stressed out about the bumps that you've had. I'm sure you'll be fine. Best of luck to you!

In other news, I tentatively have a date with this gal that I met online on Wednesday night. She seems uber cool so far...I'm looking to see if that translates in real life as opposed to cyber, internet land !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/biggrin.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/biggrin.gif|border=0!

----

My Running Profile[/URL" target="_blank">

My Non-Running Profile[/URL" target="_blank">

[http://This message has been edited by Balufudus (edited Oct-01-2007).|http://This message has been edited by Balufudus (edited Oct-01-2007).]

Re: So Many of you do not understand the heat and marathon running.

Clearly on a record breaking day of high heat, no one is going to be setting PRs and so all the runners should have tempered their running strategy to accommodate for the heat (i.e., throw goal times out the window and just take in the experience).

That said, it's a complete disgrace that the organizers ran out of water, gatorade, and ambulances. The entry fee goes into making sure that the course is a safe course for all runners and the organizers clearly missed their mark here. There's really no excuses at all. Based on the article below, people were drinking out of decorative water fountains in the park, calling friends and family to buy water for them, or buying their own water at convenience stores and gas stations...TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.

article from Chicao Sun Time[/URL" target="_blank">

I don't blame them for the death; anyone can die at any time, at any race, no matter how well organized (I've had the misfortune of being in 2 races where a runner died). But as soon as they heard that the weather was not going to cooperate they should have scrambled to make sure that everything was in place to ensure the safety of the entrants.

In any case, I have been running. Hooray! I completed a 20 miler this past weekend and the first 16 miles were very good. The last 4 miles were tough but I'm convinced that had it not been so warm that I would've had a fantastic run all the way through.

Anyway, I've got a step back week this weekend and then a repeat of the 20 miler next weekend. I'm hoping that Boston gets more typical fall weather that weekend!

Last night I ran 6 and it felt strong. The left hip got a tad achey but nothing serious at all. Otherwise, I'm actually feeling perty good...knock on wood.

In any case,
confetti
, all I saw is TV delivery day...so exciting!!! It must be like Christmas!!!

Oh and about change...I'm so anti-change it's ridiculous. Granted I have a 5 gallon water jug that holds all of my change until I'm ready to turn it in for something but I'd much rather pay with cash and not get anything silver back. Even better is just paying for everything with my card (getting credit towards a vacation that I've yet to plan) and not have to carry any cash at all. !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/biggrin.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/biggrin.gif|border=0!

----

My Running Profile[/URL" target="_blank">

My Non-Running Profile[/URL" target="_blank">
