Anyone in Orange County, NY (or surrounding) who knows of a store where they can fit me for running shoes?

Re: Newbie with Shin Splints! HELP?

Hi there,

It's me again -- the original poster with the problem of shin splints... Sorry I didn't come back sooner -- I don't get onto the computer very often!!

Thank you all so much for your advice and input... I immediately went out and got a copy of ChiRunning from my library and am LOVING it! (I even went online and ordered my very own copy to keep so that I can refer to it anytime I want a refresher.) Unfortunately I don't get much reading time either, so it's slow going, but well worth it. I am trying to read it in order, which means reading the background info before learning and applying the techniques, which I think will be good for me, but I'm dying to get out there and try it!!

I think enough of you have also convinced me that you can't just buy a pair of "running" shoes off the shelf and assume that they will be good for you! Honestly, I really never knew anything about running -- just thought I could go out there and RUN, but there really is a lot you need to know and be prepared for, isn't there??

Well, hopefully these two things, along with doing the stretches, etc. from this site, will help me with my aches and pains once I start back to running and this time, I will stick with it!!

I am going to contact my local schools as well to see if they allow public use of their running tracks outside of school hours...

Thse are all great tips! Thanks again, everyone, for your help and friendly advice!! I'll keep you posted! :o)

Susie

Newbie with Shin Splints! HELP?

Hi there,

First I want to say that I have read a few of the newbie posts here, and I love how friendly and supportive everyone is!!

I'm hoping someone has some advice for me. Here is my background:

I started the C25K back in March and I was so excited about it! It was a form of exercise that I FINALLY found I actually enjoyed and looked forward to doing every day!! But then I found out that if I ran more than like 2 days a week, I ended up with shin splints!! I have tried putting ice packs on my shins when I get back from a run, even when I don't feel like I need to, but it doesn't matter -- I still get them!

Because of this, I actually gave up on running -- telling myself if I could find a real running track (instead of the paved streets), maybe that would help -- but I don't know how to find a running track that can be used by just anyone! I really want to keep running a "free" sport, so I don't want to join a gym. Besides, I like being able to just run out my door whenever I want without having to "go" somewhere else just to run. (Although if anyone does have any tips on how to find a public running track, I'd love to hear them!!)

I bought Nike running shoes and they are very comfortable, so I don't think that's my problem, but I can't figure it out!! I see some people in my neighborhood running every single day and they don't seem to be bothered by pain...

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I am one month away from being 35 years old. I am about 5' 5" and unfortunately weigh about 160 lbs., which is the most I've ever weighed in my life!! !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/redface.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/redface.gif|border=0!( This is the main reason I wanted to become a runner, although I do want to do it for my own fitness as well.

I really want to make this work, but I am so discouraged!!

Can anyone help??

Sorry for making this so long... hopefully someone has read this far and will offer some advice!

Thank you in advance for anything you can share.

Have a nice night !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/redface.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/redface.gif|border=0!)
Susie
