Speed Work - 10k Training

How many times a week should I do speedwork if I'm training for a 10k? I usually just do it once a week and the literature seems to point to the "more mileage less speedwork" philosophy. I'm curious because a friend of mine does speedwork 3-4 times a week and runs only 40 miles a week. He says it's what works best for him and his 10k is hovering around 33 minutes right now. He's almost 40.

I suffered this myself. It went away when I reduced my training volume.

I suppose it could be some sort of nerve impingment from a neck or back injury. Running will compress the spine. Perhaps you should try some yoga to lengthen your spine.
