And crossing my legs is not uncomfortable... Maybe if I continue to stretch and hit it hard for a week with ibuprofin(which I've been hesitant to do) I can get it under control. This might have originated as a running injury but it's become apparent that not being able to sit comfortably is what's keeping it from healing now.

It’s obvious I have flat feet. My ankles visably roll inward and I use to wear right through the inside edge of the sole of my shoes. I began wearing orthodics roughly ten years ago due to frequent ankle pain and they did the trick. I started running a few years ago with the orthodics. Eventually I found that with an investment in proper shoes I could run pain-free without the orthodics so I ditched them. The more I run the more I’m agreeing with the less-is-more approach that the bare-footers of the world live by, hoping that if I strengthen my feet and run with proper posture than the injuries will be a thing of the past. I’ve since successfully tossed the supports in my unsupportive work shoes with great results. They used to kill my feet. No more. Also, I’m now getting by with a neutral pair of racing flats for my interval workouts. Again, no pain. Although my feet still have that abnormal inward lean when in a standing position I seem to have compensated. My shoes wear fairly evenly, slightly more on the outside of the heel as it should be.

I recently trained for and ran my first marathon. What an experience! Training was 19 weeks of constant pounding, peaking out at just over 50mpw, and I arrived marathon day ready to run without any kind of foot/ankle pain. Now after the marathon my right ankle feels trashed. I went on my first run since the race after 3days rest. It was an easy 3miler with the goal of getting the blood flowing back into my sore muscles. My ankle had improved since race day but it still hurt. I went with the assumption that getting out and taking it slow might help matters, as it often has when my knees have been sore in the past. Today I can barely walk. I perceive the pain as coming from just underneath the bone on the outside of my right ankle. I only hurts when my weight is on it. There is no swelling and no pain in movement otherwise. Maybe I’m just expecting too much of myself too soon after the trauma of a marathon. It is likely, and I’m hopeful, that by next week the pain will be history. But the pain has me re-examining my feet.

Will I be able to continue to train and improve with my goofy feet or will I always be limited due to the fact that my feet don’t line up directly underneath my legs? Contrary to the usual relationship of fallen arches and over-pronation, is it possible that pain on the outside of my ankle could have occurred due to under-pronation, resulting from always compensating for a weak arch (just a theory)? Another thought… there was mention in the book “Born to Run” of an accomplished runner who actually strengthened his feet to the point it corrected his flat-footedness. Was that all exaggeration? Is there actually hope of a non-surgical correction for this? Should I even care at this point and just live with the hope that it never becomes a chronic problem?

Sorry for the book here. I know this is best addressed by a rest-and-see approach and a doctor’s visit but if anyone has an opinion, professional or not, or similar experience I would greatly appreciate your thoughts!
