You need more time in the open water. Very common to hyperventilate. Be glad you have a wetsuit! But even if you do, or don't, always acclimate before the race start. You must! I practice in Santa Monica, CA if you ever need a swim buddy

Below 64 degrees water temp, its just chilling and uncomfortable. I havent yet decided to wear it during a race or not. I train in Los Angeles, CA. Santa Monica, Venice, and nearby beaches. You or anyone else is welcomed to join me for open water swims. just email me. Stick with it! Time keeps ticking, ready or not, race day will come.

I did on mine, and again once I used a wetsuit for the first time. I will say that it gets better. Yes, the bigger the chop of the waves the more sickness I feel, but you GOT to adapt. Don't let this stop you. Keep going out there, put yourself in the element, force your body to adapt. Forget about what you experienced in your youth. You're old enough now to know you can do this! Good Luck!

The waves always seem bigger when your eyes are only 5 inches out of the water. Its going to be a harder swim, but thats why you train to be strong! I've wanted to turn back after my first ocean race too, but I kept telling myself I could do this! No matter how choppy or big these waves may be or seem. Don't forget there are lifeguards watching you. And whenever someone or something distracts you, force yourself to focus! Focus! You can do this, Derek!

The fact that you're getting out there and trying says alot. Back to your question - Swimming time in 1 mile. Easy - look up last years recorded times on the competitions website, assuming this 1 mile is for competition. You can view the Events website and generally they have competitors recorded times. 1st place is where everyone wants to be. Now, if you're doing 1 mile simply for fun or personal record time, well then thats just up to you. And no matter what, don't for one second think that you can't ever be number 1! Every fast swimmer started where you are now, and believe me it takes a long time to perfect a stroke. Good Luck!
