quote:

Originally posted by pcsronbo:

Anything to be done? If I was going to the weight room I'd of course do more reps, less weight. Don't know how to translate that to running

Not sure what to telll you but if anyone reads this...
THIS IS A MYTH.

More reps, less weight waists your time and gives you less strength.
How easily you build muscle and the shape of your muscle has A LOT more to do with genetics...
You are not going to get "long, lean" muscles or whatever they say with this myth.
And women, to bulk up huge like those bodybuilding women you see, you have to be careful about your diet, do A LOT of strenuous strength training, have genetic predisposition to muscle gain-- and often have to add some extra testosterone, too! (Check out the difference between bodybuilding competitions and "natural bodybuilding" competitions!)

Lift a weight you can handle for 8-12 reps. (I do 6-10 when I have heavy enough weight to manage that, but I'd be quite happy to build muscle!)

EDITED TO SAY: You can try to lose muscle by losing weight... you can try to balance out your body by doing upper body exercises, but you can't do much to stop from gaining muscle in lower legs while running.

http://fascialrelease.com/Shin%20Pain.htm[/URL" target="_blank">
It sounds like you are talking about compartment syndrome in the second post? That seems like something you should talk to a medical professional about, if so.

http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/front/lowerleg/anteriorcompart.htm[/URL" target="_blank">
Yeah, you can google it too, but if that's it, I would not run for a few days and use those days to go to a sports medicine doctor PRONTO.... it says that can take someone out of running permanantly if not treated.

[http://This message has been edited by GreenEggsAndHam (edited Apr-28-2007).|http://This message has been edited by GreenEggsAndHam (edited Apr-28-2007).]

Re: question re: trans fats

quote:

Originally posted by NorthernElf:

Cholesterol, saturated fat, trans fat - all bad...if you have too much.

Trans fat, however, you should aim to have NONE of... they are really very, very bad. You eat 3 g of saturated fat, you are okay<del>- you eat 3 g of trans fats</del> BAD.
Going by the American Heart Association, you should limit saturated fat to 10% or less of your diet (say, 20 g) -- and trans fat to 1% or less of your diet (no more than 2 g)

You need cholesterol in your body, though you should limit it.

They've done studies<del>- even just at the equivalant of 3-4 g a day of trans fats, you can gain weight AT THE same number of Calories. That is not something you can say about many foods! You also will gain more weight in the abdomen area</del> a very heart-unhealthy place to carry it.

http://www.webmd.com/sexual-conditions/news/20060612/eat-trans-fat-get-big-belly[/URL" target="_blank">

Hydrogenated fats increase the risk of heart disease<del>- and have NO use in the body or benefit for the body, PERIOD. (There is some contention that natural animal transfats might not have quite the negative effect of plant sources, but not enough to bet on currently.)<br /><br />While saturated fats can raise levels of LDL ("bad" cholesterol), trans fats do this AND lower levels of HDL ("good" cholesterol)<br /><br />Well poly or mono - unsaturated fats are better, I would choose saturated over trans ANY day.<br /><br />The information that transfats are bad have been around for a long time.... I remember learning in elementary school to eat margarine, not butter because of saturated fats, but by high school the teachers were already telling us that butter is the better option and that trying the light butter might be a choice</del> just no margarine!

But lately, there have been more and more, conclusively condemning, studies -- and a lot of press about them... and I am glad.
It can be hard to avoid transfats if you eat out or eat any processed foods (though health is probably better off the more you limit processed foods)<del>- and that's starting to change as the markets says</del> "Umm, no poison for me please."

I do consider transfats poison-- slow acting but the end result is the same!

[http://This message has been edited by GreenEggsAndHam (edited Apr-28-2007).|http://This message has been edited by GreenEggsAndHam (edited Apr-28-2007).]

Can see the difference in photos already.

I'm at 168 this morning. My goal is 155.

I haven't done a challenge in the Canteen before, but I've done them in the Clubhouse.
Worked pretty well then because shame is an effective motivator for me. So, I'm totally ready for this.

(Eventual goal is 140 lb. That will be 20% body fat for me; I'm 5'3.5)

[http://This message has been edited by GreenEggsAndHam (edited Sep-06-2006).|http://This message has been edited by GreenEggsAndHam (edited Sep-06-2006).]

(well, fun to look at, but I kinda feel like they look trashy on any nice car.)

and I think vanity plates are gaudy (common sentiment here in GA, though my dbf insists that's only because GA charges more than any other state for them.)

So I guess not.

EDIT: I have considered getting one of those back window decals, small one, that says 26.2 .... small enough to be discreet yet still loud to those who recognize!

[http://This message has been edited by GreenEggsAndHam (edited May-25-2007).|http://This message has been edited by GreenEggsAndHam (edited May-25-2007).]
