I did a fair amount of reading on this and then actually calculated my calories burned and was shocked to discover that my 30-50 minutes of run walking actually only burned like 300-500 calories which if I remember right is like eating one bigmack at mcdonalds lol I am not saying that I eat there but putting that intop my perspective opened up my eyes allot so I really watch my caloriy intake. now like I meantions I have a glass of water , a peice of fruit and on some days I replace the fruit with 1 real cup of home made plain yogurt. my home made yogurt is not very thick I like to drink it.

now on some days after my run I do't feel hungry for up to an hour after my run.

I actually let the feeling continue and kept running for about 20 minutes non stop but my legs started to feel a little heavy . I hav`nt pushed to that since but now I do know that I can do this just as long as I slow and calm down.

Last year I was doing the c25k and ended up giving up on it.

back in April I just started to run walk without using any timers or distances I just run until I fell a little uncomfortable then slow down and keep going until I just don't feel like running any more, then I walk until I feel like running again.

I am going to be 50yrs old and 6'2' and starting weight of 248lbs. now I weigh around 238 lbs my legs are stronger but I seem to be having a problem. I run pretty good when I am not around any one, for instance.,I walk out my door down the road for about 5 minutes, at the bottom of a say 30 degree angle hill, I run up the hill over the top and down the other side ( which is a little bit steeper and allot longer), at the bottom of the hill there are lights and if I am lucky the light will be green so that I can just keep going until I get to the path of the lake. now all of this is maybe 1/2 -3/4 of a km and if I keep reminding myself to slow down I usually enter the path of the lake feeling just a tiny bit sore and can adjust my mind set and breathing accordingly. when I get to the lake side all is good unless there are people around. For some reason or other people totally mess's me up and I have to stop and walk.

My question ,is there a trick or something I can do so that I can get past this problem?

I have know real idea why this mess's me up. I know that when I was doing the c25k program I seemed to get a little messed up worrying about when the timer was going to go off this is the reason why I quite

Is it better to run at a pace you like or a pace that you can do?

I have triedslowing down speeding up changing routes . it seems that if I slow down my muscles seem to get a little sore I don't know sounds strange I guess lol.

Well today I tried again but this ime I ran at a pace that felt good and even though I seemed to run out of energy I still felt better then any of the times when I have slowed down and was able to finish ( talking about pevious weeks like W3D1-3).

This makes me wonder if I should just keep at it but stay at a pace I like.

what are your opinions on this?

I am 49 years old 6"2' and weigh around 238lbs and am in better shape then I was a few weeks back but I started out doing what I sugggested. at first I walked around 4Km which was up and down some long hills , after about a month I wasn't breathing to hard coming up the longer 45degree angled hill ,I decided to walk to the hill then run up it, I kept doing this for a while until I found out about the C25K so I started that . the C25K was easy at the beginning but now it is harder but still feels good, I have been working on W4D1 for about two weeks lol becasue if I can't acomplish one of the days I just redo it when I am supposed to run.

hehe

emilu28 wrote:

I went through this exact same panic last winter. Being from the Land of 10,000 Lakes and 10,000 degrees below 0, I was REALLY concerned about the running in winter thing. A few tips I learned:

1. Layers are your best friend. I usually wear running tights/leggings with windpants over them to keep the wind chill out. On top, I go for a longsleeved running shirt and a good, lined, wind resistant jacket. A hat (preferable) or ear band and good warm gloves complete the outfit. If I weren't so fashion-conscious I would go for a ski mask...maybe you're more gutsy than I!

2. Try yak tracks or other non-slip devices that fit over your running shoes. I personally did not try them last year, but invested in a pair this year and am super excited to try them out!

3. If you suffer from windburn, vaseline will be really useful. On your lips, your chapped skin....the uses are endless.

4. Some days, you just have to suck it up and run indoors. I hate it, but when it comes down to it, some days are simply too cold! Treadmills and indoor tracks can be a great alternate when it's just downright too cold to stick your head out the window let alone run outside.

Active.com has a couple of great articles on winter running. You should definitely check them out!

If I where to do that I probably would get arrested from people making phone calls to the locakl authorities of a man running down the street whereing a skimask in the early or late hours of the day lol.

these ae great tips that I am going to follow. as for the tredmills I have always had problems with running indoors I think that it is becasue when I run I really enjoy the fresh air and the sounds , the full inviroment helps me allot. indoors on a tread mill would be hard for me.
